Sustainability Management Plan: Academy School District 20
The Sustainability Program Plan was developed in 2009 with assistance from the Brendle Group. The 79 page document pro-
vides a vast amount of information pertaining to all phases of sustainability. The full document is available on the District 20
website; Committees>D20 Green Team.
This booklet has been prepared as an easy reference and provides an overview of the original Sustainability Program Plan. It is
intended to be used as a guide for all staff and patrons and will provide a clearer understanding of the intent of the original
Sustainability Program Plan.
It is our hope that this booklet will help schools foster student participation and identify school specific sustainability projects
and team efforts.
It is the responsibility of the Green Team at each school to raise awareness of sustainability in their own building with the help
of the Sustainability Program Plan (SPP). The SPP can generate cost savings, conserve resources, provide a more productive
working environment, and demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship.
The plan is supported at the district level through yearly Green Grants. At the beginning of each year, all schools are encour-
aged to begin planning for the development of Green Grants that will raise awareness of sustainability. The Green Team at
each school may choose grants that help conserve resources, enhance energy management, and support socially just
programs.
Information regarding Green Grants is available at www.asd20.org>Committees>D20Green Team>School Resources

Sustainability Management Plan: Academy School District 20
Academy District 20 Sustainability Policy Academy District 20 will utilize, to the extent economically and practically feasible, sustainability principles to achieve healthy,
productive, fiscally responsible, and safe environments for students, staff, parents, and the community. The district will seek to
preserve natural resources while balancing social, economic, and environmental issues. Using sustainability as a framework
for decision-making and operational principles, Academy District 20 will:
Implement sustainability objectives and goals;
Foster student participation in sustainability initiatives to strengthen commitment to develop responsible, prepared, and
productive members of society;
Recognize outstanding sustainability-related performance in the district;
Commit to the responsible stewardship of both natural and economic resources, including recycling;
Provide sustainability program oversight through the District 20 Green Team;
Reduce energy consumption district-wide; and,
Manage a five-year energy related capital project portfolio

DISTRICT 20 BACKGROUND District 20’s history goes back to a time of log schoolhouses on the wild
western frontier. While General William Jackson Palmer was busy build-
ing his sophisticated “Little London” as a haven for wealthy Easterners,
life due north of the town remained considerably less civilized. Stories
abound of a settlers’ schoolhouse on the banks of Monument Creek
whose windows were frequently shattered by stray gunfire from the
nearby stagecoach stop.
In the early 1900s, the high altitude and dry climate of Colorado Springs
gained international reputation as a cure for tuberculosis. The Modern
Woodmen of America, a life insurance company, opened a massive TB
sanatorium for afflicted employees in what came to be known as Wood-
men Valley. The sanatorium's popularity necessitated a school in the
valley, and thus was born Woodmen School and the official beginnings
of School District 20.
Meanwhile, a vibrant community was spawning a few miles east in the
dense pines of Black Forest. Residents of this community also schooled
their own children until, as in Woodmen Valley, increased enrollment
demanded that older children be bused to outlying districts.

DISTRICT 20 BACKGROUND (continued) The solution to the educational needs of these two communities came in the
form of the United States Air Force. In the early 1950s it was decided that
18,000 acres of land along the northern foothills would become the site of the
United States Air Force Academy, the nation’s largest service academy. The
1957 consolidation of Woodmen Valley, Black Forest, and the Air Force Acad-
emy into School District #20 was the result of a massive effort by parents, edu-
cators, state government, and the Air Force. Hence, the name Air Academy
District #20 and the successful liaison between a military facility and civilian
public schools.
District 20 existed for over twenty years with one high school, one junior high,
and a handful of elementaries. The decade of the 1980’s brought the district’s
major building boom, with the addition of two high schools, two middle schools,
and six elementary schools, and between 1985-1990, District #20 opened the
doors of at least one new school each year.
Throughout District 20’s rich and varied history, a dedication to the dignity, worth, and education of each student has been steadfastly main-
tained. The district’s two original elementaries, Woodmen-Roberts (named for Mrs. Bernice Roberts) and Edith Wolford Elementary, bear
the names of influential educators who exemplified excellence for District 20’s beginnings. For almost half a century, this tradition has been
upheld by the District 20 community of educators, administrators, and families.
Today, Academy District 20 serves over 24,000 students and consists of 34 schools totaling more than 1 million square feet located on over
500 acres.

DEFINING A SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT PLAN A SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT PLAN FOCUSES ON WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE:
PEOPLE PLANET PROFIT
IMPACT BUILDING

FINANCES
A Sustainability Management
Plan (SMP) is a commitment
and a tool that will move our
school district systematically
toward increased sustainability,
meeting the needs of the pre-
sent without jeopardizing the
ability of future generations to
do the same.

The D20 Green Team seeks to promote education,
awareness, and understanding through the celebration
of outstanding sustainability related ideas and perform-
ance. The D20 Green Grant program is intended to
facilitate the delivery of district sustainability goals by
creating a mechanism for students to initiate, lead, and
deliver projects that would normally be considered
financially unachievable.
All eligible schools may receive up to $5,000. The
$5,000 can be the total of multiple grant applications.
Each school can submit up to two grant applications,
and partial funding grant requests will be honored and
accepted. The aim of this program is to involve stu-
dents in the development of sustainability grant ideas,
their execution, and ultimate objective fulfillment.
We strongly encourage applicants to seek other fund-
ing means or in-kind donations from a variety of
sources such as local businesses, local sustainability
organizations, community and district foundations,
etc., to strengthen the application.

Students celebrated Earth Day by turning off
the lights, putting away the phones, and car-
pooling or walking to school. The
Environmental Club and math teacher, Lisa
Jacobson, sponsored the celebration to raise
awareness about environmental sustainability.
Madalynn Madigar, sophomore and president
of the Environmental Club, said “we were
trying to communicate all the different ways to
conserve. We encouraged teachers to “turn off
most of the lights in all rooms and put away
the projectors”. We arranged a cold lunch in-
stead of a hot lunch to reduce the energy use
in the kitchen.”

During Earth Day, an energy audit was per-
formed by a 6th grade Cornerstone class.
New recycling bins were placed in class-
rooms that previously had none. A school
wide Earth Day pledge poster was hung in
the cafeteria where students placed a green
thumbprint in support of Earth Day.
An Earth Day contest to design a tee shirt for
next years’ event was initiated. Students
decorated grocery store paper bags with
drawings and Earth Day quotes. The bags
were returned to local grocery stores to be
used for shoppers at checkout.

SCHOOL-IN-THE-WOODS
Students and staff celebrated Earth Day by
having all students sign a pledge stating
how they will help Save the Planet. The
students and staff learn by practicing a
‘hands-on-approach’ to natural sciences.
The entire school is committed to being
ambassadors for a greener planet. News
Channel 5 featured a segment about the
celebration on Earth Day. It can be viewed
