Promoting sustainable use of resources is the simplest and most natural way to achieve much-needed harmony with our ecosystem. That is why we use only Multiutility certified energy produced from renewable sources. Using 100% clean energy, we are contributing to reducing pollution, implementing renewable energy development and reducing greenhouse gases. The energy our production centres need comes from hydroelectric power plants run by the Trentino Dolomiti Energia group.

In addition, certifying our production processes also means contributing to the objectives set by the Kyoto Protocol: even with no obligations under EU directives to reduce emissions, we decided to offset them by acquiring credits that co-finance projects to reduce CO2 emissions, and projects using renewable sources.

All this comes with the assurance that each credit acquired corresponds to a tonne of CO2 absorbed or prevented and is identifiable with a serial number.

Specific investment and production decisions are included in the fields of resource optimisation and corporate responsibility. We have acquired special reverse osmosis equipment for water purification that allows us to significantly reduce waste and, since 2015, we have been using energy-efficient LED lighting in our plant.

The sustainability of our cosmetics is characterized by carefully taken decisions on packaging: the packaging, containers, labels and caps of most of our lines are 100% recyclable PET, glass, paper or aluminum.

Product boxes, leaflets and communication material are made from paper with 60% recovered fibres and 40% FSC® certified post-consumer fibres. In addition, we use only Steinbeis unbleached recycled paper in our offices. Compared to producing virgin paper, every 500 sheets of recycled paper used saves 83% of water, 72% of electricity and 53% of CO2 emissions into the environment.

Only through careful daily decisions taking sustainability and ecology into account can our quality of life and that of future generations be preserved and improved.

ility

Over the decades we have had the pleasure of organising many initiatives and campaigns in favour of environmental sustainability. In recent years, the sustainable lifestyle that we promote has steadily become the everyday routine that regulates our actions. Hence, we always try to ensure the actions we pursue in this matter are a consequence of a naturally aware decision-making process.

Sustainability report

In September 2015, the governments of the 193 UN member states endorsed the so-called “2030 Agenda”, a common programme with 17 sustainable development objectives to achieve by 2030.

The objectives, known as SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), were created to define global priorities, calling on all governments and all local players to work together and take action. The program therefore also invites companies to act responsibly, calling on them to reduce the negative impacts of their activities and contribute to the well-being of both the people and the planet.

It is clear that complying with the agenda requires all sectors in society, both public and private, to be heavily involved. Additionally, research centres and universities need to act, while awareness among cultural operators and dissemination of the information must be pursued.

The 2030 Agenda defines the way forward at a planetary level, the means of which are to be measured in the same way in all countries, and its core values it are the same that have always inspired our work.

For this reason, we have also decided to use the 2030 Agenda as our guide when evaluating initiatives to improve the environmental and social impact of our company, the results achieved and the objectives in terms of efficiency and resource consumption.

Our first sustainability report aims to document the main sustainability actions and decisions in Kemon, controlling their impact and effects with a set of specially designed indicators.

These decisions and actions take their inspiration from the 2030 Agenda and the intentions fit perfectly with some specific Goals therein: the use of indicators allows us to some extent to measure our contribution to these global goals, and control our results and our year-on-year improvement.

There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals of very different types. The UN see a wide range of features related to our future as fitting under the sustainability banner, among them socio-economic factors. That is why the fight against hunger and poverty can be found at the top of the list. Given the idiosyncrasies of our business, it is clear that we are not in a position to contribute to all of these goals, but we can say that we are doing our part in 8 out of 17 (in bold).

1,468 hours/yearSTAFF TRAINING

In the 2016-2018 period, there was a steady increase in staff training hours, in accordance with the company's willingness to invest in the professional growth of its resources. The increased number of women in the company, many occupying positions of responsibility, constitutes the clearest evidence of equality in the workplace.

100%OF EMISSIONS OFFSET OR PREVENTED 982,509 tonnes of CO2= 1,400 trees

Our emissions come mainly from two sources of energy: electricity and natural gas. In 2018 our energy needs were 50% natural gas and 50% electric energy, all of which has been offset. Using renewable energy sources allows us to avoid 100% of emissions arising from electricity. As for natural gas, by voluntarily adhering to the Kyoto protocol, we are funding environmental offset projects aimed at ensuring that our consumption is zero impact. In fact, all the 982,509 tonnes of CO2 we produce are prevented or offset. This is equivalent to the annual air-cleaning work of approximately 1,400 trees.

The economic and social aspect

The economic and social indicators aim to measure our impact on society in terms of equity, growth and safety of people and combatting discrimination. These indicators are mainly associated with objectives 3, 5, 8 and 16.

We encourage and sustain equal opportunities based on merit, favouring the development and empowerment of women and breaking down discrimination of any kind. In addition to the indicators outlined below, the data for the last three years highlights employment contract conversions for 44 workers, 29 of whom belong to protected categories.

The environment and resources aspect

The environmental and resource indicators govern our environmental impact in various ways: energy resource consumption and savings, emissions, corporate policy and decisions as well as water and packaging management.

These collective indicators contribute to the 2030 Agenda goals in the areas of the environment and climate, specifically numbers 3, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16.

91% OF PRODUCTS WITH NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our commitment to increasingly clean and green cosmetics is verified by the figures in our formulations:- 91% of our products contain natural ingredients; of these, about half even have natural certifications (Vegan, Love Nature, Cosmos Organic). - Over 50% of our R&D laboratory projects are of organic/natural interest, a figure that is constantly growing year-on-year.

45%ELECTRIC OR HYBRID VEHICLES

45% of the vehicle fleet is hybrid, a massive rise in the last 3 years (only 15% in 2015). Despite this, there is still clear room for improvement in this area.

-18 %IN PRODUCT PACKAGING IN 2018

Packaging continues to be a major challenge in the co-smetics industry. In 2018 we were able to reduce the overall packaging per kg of product by 18%, some 12.7% across the 2016-2018 period.

-10 %IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION PER PRODUCT

The energy savings in 2018 can be quantified as -10% per kg of product. That is the equivalent of producing a bottle of shampoo, while saving the energy required to recharge 2 smartphones.

-34 %IN WATER CONSUMPTION PER PRODUCT

From 2016 to 2018 the trend in water consumption per kg of product was notably downwards: -34% in the 3 years (-2% in 2018). That is the equivalent of the drinking water required by over 4,000 people for one year.

-10 %IN WASTE PER PRODUCT

In the 2016-2018 period we managed to reduce waste by 10% per product unit.
