A WORD FROM THE ORGANISERGlaxosmithKline

The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) accounts for the three pillars of sustainability - environmental, social and financial. Our Training Better Leaders workshop aims to improve sustainability literacy and skills for young professionals and to equip them with the tools they need going forward into global leadership roles. The ultimate goal is to build a community of knowledgeable and engaged sustainability professionals.

This training module is influenced by the International Society of Sustainability Professionals’ report, which identifies the key competencies critical to the successful performance of professionals working in the field of sustainability.

The first day is built around influencing change, focusing on key skills for communicating and engaging with stakeholders. The second day is designed around affecting change, with a mix of discussions, practical workshops and Q&A sessions with professionals. The third and final day will allow students to practise their skills and work in teams on a sustainability project, mentored by seasoned professionals. Teams will present their sustainability project ideas to a panel of judges and compete for fun prizes.

All of this with time to mingle, chat and enjoy local food and drinks! We hope you will enjoy yourselves.

Jo Hamilton (Session Speaker)

Jo’s research focuses on community-led energy projects, and peer-to-peer learning on home eco-renovation. She is currently involved in two research projects: EVALOC (Evaluating the impacts, effectiveness and success for Department of Energy and Climate Change funded low carbon communities on localised energy behaviour) and UNLOC (Understanding Local and Community Governance of Energy). Within these projects she is using action research methodologies, exploring the role of social learning and how social networks are used to disseminate energy messages, exploring the role of the arts in engaging individuals and communities with climate change and energy, and helping to develop monitoring and evaluation resources.

Jo’s research was fuelled through coordinating the ECI-led local engagement project Oxfordshire ClimateXchange. ClimateXchange helped develop and support local community groups, working alongside other local support agencies, and has worked to engage a variety of individuals and groups in climate change and energy through workshops and events ranging from creative writing to engaging local businesses involved in the building and construction trades. In partnership with COIN’s Ecovation project ClimateXchange organised three successful county-wide eco-home open days, attracting over 2,000 visitors to eco-renovated homes. The ClimateXchange project is now dormant, but she contributes to the on-going development of the Oxfordshire Low Carbon Hub and Community Action Groups Oxfordshire.

She holds an MSc in Energy and Environment Studies from the Centre for Alternative Technology / UEL, and a BA in social anthropology and English from the University of Manchester.

For the past ten years, home for Anna has been a mix of Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Honduras and the United Kingdom. Currently, she is completing her DPhil in Geography and the Environment, with a focus on digital strategy, new media activism and environmental management. Anna’s research explores how environmental non-governmental organisations are drawing on digital technologies to co-produce environmental campaigns and seeks to develop a framework for measuring supporter engagement beyond quantitative metrics. Anna holds a Master’s of Philosophy with Distinction in Environmental Management from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of British Columbia (Canada). Anna’s earlier research drew on participatory action research to investigate how traditional ecological knowledge and classical science could be integrated into management planning for coastal ecosystems and small-scale fisheries.

Anna has also worked as a researcher and field project officer for several environmental non-governmental organisations in both the environment and development sectors. By training, she is a certified Environmental Impact Assessment Practitioner with a background in permaculture design, analog forestry, biodiversity restoration and community development. She is currently assisting with lectures and course teachings for the Biodiversity Conservation and Management MSc programme alongside her participation in various development, leadership and science communication programmes run via the University of Oxford.

Alongside her DPhil, Anna is in the process of launching a social enterprise, which will help to provide digital skills training to women in the global South. Through assisting in the development of digital literacy and professional skill training, Anna hopes to promote gender equality, women’s empowerment and to contribute to the creation of a global platform in which women can share their stories.

Donnington Kitchen

Donnington Doorstep is a much loved, independent, charitable family centre based on the Donnington Estate in East Oxford.

We offer a holistic approach, working with the community, children and their families from birth to adulthood. We are open to everybody, but focus support on those facing disadvantage, exclusion or crisis.

Doorstep kitchen raises money for Donnington Doorstep. All food is freshly prepared on site and is subject to availability of produce, always in line with good ethical practices. We are proud to be supported by Oxford FoodBank.

The Shotover Brewing Company

We are a craft brewery located just outside of the city of Oxford, England dedicated to producing high quality cask and bottled beers. What’s in a beer? We combine traditional British brewing methods and ingredients with some striking combinations of English and new world hops to produce beers with a distinctive full flavour and complexity.

The brewery was founded in 2009 by Ed & Pip Murray in a 200 year old stable at Manor Farm in Horspath, just four miles from Carfax at the centre of Oxford, on the southern slope of Shotover hill. Ed had been an amateur craft brewer for over thirty years.

We set out to produce beers with an attractive and complex flavour profile by combining the highest quality ingredients, skill and patience. Our cask ales are naturally conditioned in the brewery for two weeks before release and our bottled beers are conditioned for longer. Real ale is a fresh product and ours is usually enjoyed within four weeks of leaving the mash tun. We make a small range of beers as perfect exemplars of their type.

Our business philosophy is built on three simple strands – Product Quality, Service, and Local identity – we are an Oxford brewery and our market is Oxfordshire.

The Cotswold Cider Company

We use only the best ‘vintage’ cider apple varieties from our local area to give you the full flavour that real, natural cider provides, so you just know you’re not compromising on anything artificial. Let’s get back to our roots… and get real. Here’s what we love doing:

No Brainer Classic Cider: A dry, still, hazy cider, renowned for its rich, fruity and distinctive quality.

Sweet Cheeks: Genius blend of hedgerow fruits - blackberry and elderberry to pukker you up- m-mmm - lipsmacking!

Vaults and Garden

The Vaults and Garden was established by Will Pouget with a vision of creating a socially positive café hub promoting ecological sustainability. We have attempted to achieve this by:• Sourcing local, organic and ethically produced goods and ingredients• Promoting healthy detox living• Stimulating discussion and promoting awareness of issues regarding

individual and social wellbeing and ecological regeneration• Promoting genuine hospitality that is a pleasure for both host and guest• Hosting socially, ecologically and culturally inspired community events• Providing “No-Waste Catering”.

We are careful to choose where our ingredients are sourced from - for example, lentils from south-west France rather than China.

In a modern world with polluted air, water and food, diets that are unsustainable to our lifestyles, climate and metabolic needs, we can end up feeling like a wreck. We choose our ingredients, develop our recipes and plan our menus with a view to create healthy and nutritionally balanced options that will appeal to a broad range of people, also accommodating special dietary needs. As a result, our food contains no MSG, minimal sugar, minimal oil, and no artificial ingredients.

From menu planning, recipe formulation, purchasing, food preparation, portioning and service, we aim and train our staff to minimise wastage of ingredients and food. Less is more, allowing us to use more expensive organic produce without raising the price! We abhor microwave ovens, teflon coatings, plastic utensils and short-life or toxic equipment. Everything possible is recycled including all cardboard, glass, paper and most plastic. Our dream is to legally and economically compost all our biodegradable waste and we know it’s going to come true soon!

KeepCup

KeepCup is an international business with offices in London and Los Angeles, headquartered in Melbourne, Australia.

Working in the café industry in Melbourne, siblings, Abigail Forsyth and Jamie Forsyth witnessed first-hand the environmental and financial cost of the disposable cups. Not able to find a suitable reusable for espresso based coffee, they decided to make their own. Since the first KeepCup was sold in 2009, the business has grown rapidly and employs a team of 36 with 25 distribution partners. KeepCup Original is offered in 5 sizes – 4 to 16oz, and in April 2014 we launched KeepCup Brew in tempered glass.

The business has been lauded for good design, commitment to sustainability and for kickstarting positive behaviour change around the world.

KeepCup is a purpose driven business supported by a brilliant range of products. The business and brand asks consumers to think about the impact of convenience

culture and the positive routes we can take to reduce waste. Whilst the design of the product is critical, we give equal weight to creating the right circumstances and environment to tip the behaviour change from discard to reuse.

Our close relationship with specialty coffee and our celebration of design and colour make KeepCup an accessible entry point to the sustainability journey. People purchase KeepCups because they love the way they look and feel, and continue using them because they form a positive habit.

Feel good. Do good. The best reusable is the one you use.
