The Port of Antwerp Sustainability Award recognises a project that contributes to the transition to a more sustainable port. It is organised jointly by Antwerp Port Authority, Left Bank Development Corporation and Alfaport Voka (chamber of commerce). In the 2018 competition, 17 projects were submitted by companies and organisations operating in the port. The projects focus on People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership and implement the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals on a local scale. The specialist jury selected a shortlist of three finalists: Ashland Specialties Belgium, BASF Antwerp and Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB). Based on the points awarded by the jury and the result of the online voting by the generalpublic, CMB won the award for its “Hydroville” shuttle, the first passenger vessel to be powered by hydrogen. The jury praises CMB for paving the way with this future-oriented project that will serve as a testbed for hydrogen technology on awider scale.

The jury would like to congratulate all participants and appreciates the efforts anddetermination of companies in pursuing innovative projects. These initiatives showhow commercially-driven projects can offer high sustainability gains and serve as an inspiration to other companies in the port and far beyond.

On behalf of the jury,Marc Van PeelPort Alderman

ASHLAND SPECIALTIES BelgiumRecycling of rainwater: borrowing water from the neighbours

Ashland has installed two additional rainwater collection ponds on its own site and those of its neighbours. In addition it has laid 4 km of drains underneath the site to pump water up from a depth of 4 m. The ultimate aim is to no longer use drinking water for water purification. This will yield savings of 64.000 m³ of water per year.

The Ashland production process creates salt (NaCl) as a by-product which is washed away in the waste water. This effluent has to be treated biologically before it can be discharged into the Scheldt river. However the salt concentration is too high and so the effluent first has to be further diluted. Previously this was done using water of drinking quality. Thanks to the new project, however, rainwater will be used in the first instance, then shallow ground water, and then drinking water only as a last resort. A further advantage is that rainwater from neighbouring sites will no longer be discharged straight into the Scheldt but will always go through the purification process, thus lowering the environmental impact of all the companies involved.

“This recycling of rainwater by Ashland Specialities Belgium is more relevant today than ever. The jury acknowledges the collaboration between companies and the simplicity of this inventive project with its significant impact.”

BASF AntwerpWaste-saving aniline plant with energy recovery

BASF produces 530,000 tonnes of aniline annually, as the main feedstock for polyurethane foam used in the construction industry. The installation of two new units offers advantages in terms of responsible production, the circular economy, energy and climate.

Thanks to this new initiative BASF recovers 30% of the raw materials which would otherwise be lost. It also recovers up to 40,000 tonnes of steam which is used for sustainable on-site heating. As a result less fossil fuels are used. Furthermore the waste products are no longer carried to a processing plant. This leads to a 90% reduction in waste output and 200 fewer truck trips per year. Finally the incineration unit is fitted with a NOx catalyst that converts noxious fumes into nitrogen, oxygen and water. This reduction in emissions leads to better air quality.

“BASF has demonstrated that a commercially-driven project can also be sustainable. This recovery of valuable raw materials and energy exemplifies the transition to a circular economy and also has a positive impact on mobility, thus creating a win-win situation all round.”

CMBHydroville: hydrogen-powered passenger shuttle

CMB is the first to successfully design and build a registered passenger vessel that burns hydrogen in a diesel engine. The advantage of hydrogen is that its combustion does not produce any CO2, particulates or sulphur oxides. The shuttle carries commuters to and from work during the morning and evening rush hours, thus contributing to more sustainable travel between home and work in the Antwerp region.

The shuttle also acts as a testbed for hydrogen technology which CMB hopes will inspire the shipping industry to make the transition to this environment-friendly fuel. With this project CMB aims to put Antwerp on the map as an innovation centre for hydrogen technology and to share its expertise with other players, both in Belgium and abroad, for using hydrogen as a marine fuel.

www.hydroville.be

“CMB plays a pioneering role with this innovative, future-oriented project. This initiative will act as a catalyst and lower the barriers to entry for other players all over the world.”

11 / MSC

More onshore power for seagoing shipsMSC is investing an additional 100 million euros to equip its seagoing ships with onshore power connections, thus enabling them to draw power from the local supply instead of having to run their engines while at berth. This means lower emissions of NOx, SOx and particulates, thus benefiting air quality. It also reduces noise pollution locally and onboard the vessel itself.
