Thinking forwards:

• Guest speaker to open next year: any ideas?• OFSTED• Supporting the Mentors• Communication• Recruitment and a shifting landscape

Page 8: Sussex IT Partnership Forum for Professional Tutors

OFSTED

• New two stage inspection: Summer term University: Autumn term: Schools (with our NQTs)

• Main focus of NQT visit is impact on pupil progressSome things we need to think about:• we are clear about how the enhancing placement gives an alternative

experience• OFSTED feedback from last year: Quality of mentor written feedback,

tracking of trainees and action planning• Everyone always needs to think about EAL and diversity• We could be any time but probably not until next year

Page 9: Sussex IT Partnership Forum for Professional Tutors

Supporting the Mentors

Recruitment nationally – some changes• School Direct Partnerships, School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITTs) and

universities (HEIs)registered with NCTL in July for approval to recruit to as many courses as they wish and to give indicative numbers

• NCTL have worked out the target numbers of trainees needed in each subject and phase, allocated protected target numbers for SD and SCITT places and HEIs can recruit the remainder for Core PGCE.

• Once UCAS open all School Direct, SCITT and Core PGCE providers recruit as many trainees as they wish …….UNTIL…..

• NCTL apply ‘controls’ when 1. universities go over their quota nationally and 2. For SD and SCITTS when/if the national target in that subject is reached

• Some individual HEIs and SCITTs will be ‘capped’ earlier if NCTL perceives from the data that they are ‘taking over the market’ in their area

Page 12: Sussex IT Partnership Forum for Professional Tutors

Why? and what does this mean for our partnership?

• To remove barriers to providers being able to recruit more trainees than their original allocation

• NCTL are using this approach to channel a larger proportion of candidates through SD and SCITT route

• Some subjects didn’t meet their recruitment reserve nationally (e.g. Computer Studies, Maths, Science, MFL) so unlikely to be capped

• Others e.g. Primary, History, PE, are likely to be controlled – especially for HEIs but also for SD so………

• More of a race than ever before against other providers to get good candidates quickly

Page 13: Sussex IT Partnership Forum for Professional Tutors

Sussex process very similar to last year • PRIMARY screened by primary team and interviews for SD organised

by tutors to take place in SD and PGCE schools• SECONDARY SCIENCE, MFL, SCIENCE AND ALL SALARIEDS invited to

interview at University first• SECONDARY ALL OTHER SUBJECTS Sussex Tutor team screen all

applications - feedback and recommendations sent to Lead School schools then interview using university schedule (unchanged from last year) and make offers

• For all secondary SD places schools generate offer letter from our template and return Admissions Record to iteadmissions.
