Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on yourwebsite and they look amazing! My problem is that Ihave had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to pleasehelp me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out tochew. Can you fix this dentist’s dentures so I don’t haveto pay for another set! Please help me, as I can’t live thisway.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You didnot mention if this was an immediate set of denturesgiven to you the day your other teeth were removed orsimply a replacement for older dentures. There is an artto making dentures and even with tremendous care andskill; denture fabrication is a process that requirespatience. As people live with dentures they experiencecontinued bone loss. There is so much bone loss thatdentures begin to move and may actually slide duringchewing even with using denture adhesives. When teethare removed you actually lose up to 40% of theremaining bone width in the first year after teeth areremoved and you can continue to lose 40-60% of theremaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if notpractical to place mini-implants or traditional implants topreserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over timedentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fittingdentures usually require that they be made again fromscratch. It is just too easy to change someone’s dentureand then feel that the changes that were made could havemade your situation worse! So most dentists will want tostart over with new impressions, brand new teeth andmountings to try and remedy the problems you haveexperienced. Trying to make your dentures fit mayactually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of money, which would be wasted if your dentures couldnot be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someone’s olddentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores orsimply to create a healthy foundation for making a new
set of dentures. I would have to assess your olddentures to make an evaluation of how close they are toideal and the status of your bite and how your teeth fittogether for optimal chewing. Then I could decide if wecan do anything with your current set of teeth.
We would be happy to perform a second opinion orimplant consultation to our readers! Please call us at414-464-9021 to schedule your visit.
Please visit our website atwww.hamptondentalassociates.com to view photos, videos and testimonials of our work! Please visit us onfacebook at Hampton Dental Associates and like us forfun articles and Ask the Dentists columns and Dr.Winter’s articles on implant and reconstructivedentistry.

"Although I have enjoyed these years working in acareer I love, it is time for me to take a step in a new direc-tion. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It'stime for me to spend more time with my wife Mary Pat.We look forward to doing some traveling and spendingmore time with our grandchildren and great-grandchil-dren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store fromtime to time, because my heart is still in the business thathas been so much a part of me for all these years."

successful program. Steve was an integral partof those accomplishments and a tremendousresource of knowledge, not just on the basket-ball court but on life in general," Dalton said.
Stuve noted that Dalton was a fan of UCLAbasketball Coach John Wooden, and Wooden's"pyramid of success" is given to all members of the team at the beginning of the season.Stuve then went over the values of the base of the pyramid in remembrance of Dalton.
On the value of "industriousness," Stuvenoted that Dalton had detailed practice plans"and an unmatched work ethic. He gave every-thing he had to make sure his players were pre-pared for every game."
On the value of friendship," Stuve said
Dalton "was as reliable and kind-hearted afriend as you will ever come across. He wasgenuine in his actions and he cared deeply forothers."
On the value of loyalty, Stuve said Dalton"gave us complete support to the players andfellow coaches. He worked diligently every dayto make the program as good as it could be."
On the value of cooperation, Stuve saidDalton always did what was best for thegreater good of the program. Dalton, Stuvesaid, was adaptable "and had a keen under-standing of the big picture at all times."
On the value of enthusiasm, Stuve saidDalton "truly enjoyed teaching the game of basketball. He enthusiasm for learning was
inspirational to all of us. Even with 30 years of experience he was still eager to learn newthings and do everything he could be the bestat every facet of coaching."
Stuve noted that over the past several yearsDalton underwent treatment for cancer and hisphysical stature lessened, but Stuve said hispassion for the game and his dedication to theprogram was stronger than ever.
"Steve's legacy is embodied by this year'sprogram motto: 'Whatever you do, work at itwith all your heart,'" Stuve said. "Steve exem-plified this in all he did and for that we areprofoundly and eternally grateful."
Stuve then added: "As I look back onSteve's final season last year, I realize he wasnot dying as much as he was showing us all
how to live -- and that's with integrity, sincer-ity, kindness, generosity, with passion andenthusiasm for all you do."
As Stuve spoke, a photo of Dalton was dis-played on screens behind both baselines of thebasketball court.

2. Debt Collection Scam: You receivea phone call from someone claimingthat you have an unpaid debt. You arethreatened with garnishments, law-suits, even jail time if you don’t payright now. The scammer will often usecaller ID spoofing and pretend to be agovernment agency or law enforcement
in order to further invoke fear.3. Sweepstakes/Prizes/Gifts Scam:
You receive a call, letter, or emailclaiming you’ve won a prize in a sweep-stakes. In order to receive the prize, you are instructed to send a fee tocover expenses associated with deliv-ery, processing, or insurance. The prizeis not real; you should never have topay money to claim a prize you havewon.
4. Tech Support Scam: You are con-tacted by “technicians” claiming tohave detected a virus or security threaton your computer and, for a fee, canlog-in and correct the problem remote-ly. These callers are actually hackerstrying to steal money or sensitive com-
puter passwords and/or damage com-puters with malicious software.5. Government Grant Scam: You
receive a phone call, email, or letterinforming you that you’ve qualified fora government grant. In order to receivethe grant, however, you are instructedto send money as a processing or deliv-ery fee, usually by wire transfer or pre-paid debit card.
6. Advance Fee Loan Scam: Whilesearching for loan information, you seean enticing ad and click through to thewebsite. You fill out an application andsoon receive an email or phone calladvising that you are approved for theloan, but you must first send a process-ing fee, security deposit or insurance. You pay the “fee,” but never see the
loan.7. Credit Card Scam: The scammer
pretends to be from your bank or cred-it card issuer, and they claim that youare now eligible for a lower interestrate, or that they need to verify arecent transaction. The consumer pro-vides the scammer with their creditcard number and security code to “ver-ify” their identity.
8. Work from Home Scam: Whilelooking for a job online, you answer anad for making big bucks while workingfrom home. The job may be stuffingenvelopes, posting advertisements, orshipping packages. You could have youridentity stolen when you fill out theemployment forms, or even end up han-
dling stolen merchandise.9. Fake Check/Money Order Scam:This can happen any time someone ispaying you for goods or services (evenwhen you are selling somethingonline). You receive a check in the mailthat is larger than the amount owed, and you are asked to deposit the checkand wire the difference. The check is afake and when it bounces, you’re outthe money.
10. Lottery scam: You receive a call, letter, or email advising that you havewon a large amount of money in a for-eign lottery, but you have to payupfront for taxes and fees. Such lotter-
ies are illegal. Sometimes you may besent a check as partial payment, butthe check will be counterfeit.
Why Scams Work:There is a science to scams, and it
may surprise you to know that scam-mers use many of the same techniquesas legitimate sales professionals. Thedifference, of course, is that their“product” is illegal and could cost you
a fortune. Here are the major tech-niques they use to draw you in:
Establishing a connection: Thescammer builds rapport and a relation-ship with you. This is usually used face-to-face, as in home improvement scamsand many investment scams, but alsoonline romance scams.
Source credibility: Scammer usetechniques to make themselves looklegitimate, such as fake websites, socialmedia posts, or hacked emails thatcome from a friend’s account. Mostemail phishing scams spoof real compa-nies, and many scammers pretend to bea trusted business or governmentagency in order to add credibility.
Playing on emotions: Scammers
rely on emotion to get you to make aquick decision before you have time tothink about it. An emergency situationor a limited time offer is usually theirmethodology. They count on emotionalrather than rational decision-making.
What You Can Do:• Don’t be pressured into making
fast decisions.• Never provide your personal infor-
mation (address, date-of-birth, bankinginformation, ID numbers) to people youdo not know.
• Don’t click on links from unso-licited email or text messages.
• If you are unsure about a call oremail that claims to be from your bank, utility company, etc., call the business
directly using the number on your billor credit card.• Never send money by wire transfer
or prepaid debit card to someone youdon’t know or haven’t met in person.
• Never send money for an emer-gency situation unless you can verifythe emergency.
