Hastings is fast becoming a desirable destination for students to study; the growth of degree level students choosing to study in Hastings is growing year upon year. The town offers a vibrant, cosmopolitan and bohemian atmosphere with many employees taking advantage of the location, a small seaside town with a large reputation, close to Brighton, London and Ashford, and moving their business to Hastings.

There is always something to do here and in a recent poll by The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts , Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), Hastings was named in the top five English ‘heritage assets’ – above Oxford and other historic British locations.

We have many courses on offer and our degree level students win a lot of national awards and find employment, increasingly locally, but also in Brighton, London, New York and Los Angeles.

welcome to hastingsThe picturesque town of Hastings is an eclectic mix of Victorian elegance and modern transformation, with a vibrant mix of business, tourism, leisure and education. An extensive regeneration programme over recent years has attracted new businesses, visitors, students and residents, giving Hastings a real buzz.

Hastings’ reputation as a thriving national and international arts centre is gathering momentum. The town hosts an annual arts festival, Coastal Currents, and in 2011, the Jerwood Arts Institute opened a brand new gallery in the Old Town. In nearby Bexhill-on-Sea, the De La Warr Pavilion hosts high profile exhibitions, performances and concerts. Hastings loves to celebrate, and there are lively social events throughout the year, including ‘Jack-in-the-Green’, The St. Leonards Festival, The Seafood and Wine Festival and The Hastings Old Town Carnival, as well as exhilarating fireworks displays, bonfires and parades.

The ancient fishing quarter with its colourful boats and charming fishing huts is home to Britain’s largest beach-based fishing fleet, and this area still plays a central role in Hastings’ culture. With its seaside setting, stunning parkland, Cliffside walks, bustling Old Town, beautiful buildings, varied bars, clubs, restaurants and colourful characters, Hastings is a unique and exciting place in which to live, work and study.

Sussex Coast College Hastings offers 14 degree level courses in two outstanding contemporary campuses, with adjacent rail links to London, Brighton and Europe, in specialist custom designed areas for Higher Education. Hastings has a variety to offer, with something to interest every student.

2016 is a special year for Hastings and 1066 country as it marks the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. The town is planning many events including:

Less than a mile from Hastings town centre, this brand new site has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas, where students are currently constructing, wiring, plumbing and decorating a full-sized eco-house in the central atrium. This house is being built in stages over two years, to a unique design. The workshops are fitted with industry standard equipment, including a facility to generate 3D modelling.

Students at Ore Valley have access to the latest digital technology, an outdoor sports pitch, table tennis, pool and Wii, as well as a refectory and café area.

The campus is adjacent to Ore Valley train station, with Hastings town centre just one stop away (the ride is one minute). When you step off the train, you’ll find yourself at Station Plaza, right next to the shops of the town centre and a stone’s throw from the beach.

Station Plaza is situated in the town centre, directly next to Hastings train station. Its large, light-filled atrium is surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones.

Classrooms are equipped with the most up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. Students have 24/7 access to lessons and learning resources from home, via Wiki, podcasts and teacher/student blogs. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, a gym, exhibition spaces, a coffee shop, a training kitchen, a professional salon, restaurant, diner, a large learning resource centre and audio-visual/media equipment.

The campus is the location for large college events, such as Open Days and awards ceremonies, and frequently hosts art exhibitions, events, fairs, concerts and performances, so there’s always something going on. If, however, you fancy getting out and about in your breaks, you’ll find the shops of Hastings town centre in less than a minute’s walk and in five minutes, you can be on the beach or exploring the lanes of the ancient Old Town.

Learning Resource Centre

There is a Learning Resource Centre situated on the Second Floor at Station Plaza and at Ore Valley. These centres provide traditional library resources alongside IT with support from library staff to enable students to access the resources and study environment required to succeed in their studies. The range of resources provided include books, audio books, DVDs, newspapers and magazines, as well as computers, black and white and colour copying, printing and scanning facilities and access to electronic books and journals. The automated self-service system means that LRC staff are available to support students with their research while students issue and return items themselves. At Station Plaza, there is also a bookable cinema room.

Station Plaza Fitness

Come along and join the newest, mostup-to-date gym in town. Station Plaza Fitness gives you the ultimate gym experience with state of the art facilities and special rates for students. Students can join our fully qualified fitness and nutrition programme specific to your goals at no extra cost.

Coast Coffee

The reasonably priced Coast Coffee at Station Plaza and the café area at Ore are great places to relax and meet friends. They sell sandwiches, snacks, fruit and pastries, Costa coffee and a selection of hot and cold drinks.

Student Refectories

At Ore Valley and Station Plaza, the Student Refectories serve hot lunches as well as sandwiches, snacks and hot and cold drinks.There is also a Subway sandwich bar on the ground floor of Station Plaza.

Multi-use Games Area

To relax at Ore, there’s an multi-use games area and both sites have a pool table, table tennis and Wii.

Halls of Residence

Plaza Hair & Beauty Training Academy

Plaza Hair & Beauty Training Academy at Station Plaza offers a wide range of hair and beauty treatments at discounted prices. Treatments are carried out by students under the supervision of highly experienced staff. Treatments include hair cutting, colouring, setting and perming, facials and make-up, micro-current, microdermabrasion, lash perming, spa treatments, manicures and pedicures, waxing and electrolysis, body treatments, reflexology and Indian head massage. The salons also run a variety of open workshops.

Coast Restaurant

Coast Restaurant at Station Plaza is a modern and very popular formal diningrestaurant open for lunch and dinner. It is open to the public, staff and students throughout term time. Our students serve customers in the restaurant as part of their training, under professional supervision, and they prepare, serve and cook the dishes using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients wherever possible. Higher Education students can organise social evenings and use the bar facilities.

As a higher education student at SCCH, you automatically become a member of the University of Brighton Students’ Union through our HE Association. In addition, all HE students are represented on the SCCH Students’ Council by an elected HE Officer.

Sussex Coast College Hastings has worked in partnership with the University of Brighton (UOB) for over 20 years.

UOB is the main awarding body for Higher Education in the college, and we work together to facilitate our Higher Education provision across two campus sites.

The college’s Engineering department has worked in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire for the past four years.

UCLAN is the only university which offers this particular nuclear level 4 and 5 qualification, and the college’s students have been the first cohort through this specialised and specific process.

Sussex Coast College Hastings is the leading nuclear skills training provider in this area.

Iain Glynn, FdA Graphic Communication

In 2014 Iain Glynn, who had worked previously as a technician, received a high distinction for his innovative font design, inspired by the De La Warr Pavilion. He has since gone on to complete the BA Top Up and received a YCN Award in September 2015 for his work on the Fedroni paper brief. Iain told us: ‘The FdA was the perfect course for me as a mature student. It allowed me to stay local and study whilst juggling work and family life. It has provided an ideal route into employment and I found the small class size and the generous amount of tutorial time particularly beneficial’.

The FdA Graphic Communication course, which is run in Partnership with the University of Brighton, is well established with a strong reputation for print and packaging design with students regularly winning national design awards. It recruits students from far and wide, but particularly focuses on offering local students the opportunity to gain a University education, including those who choose to save money by staying home to study or those who have families.

FdA’s are degree level courses with an intense vocational focus, usually followed by a one year BA Top-Up course to complete the full degree. The Graphics course teaches idea development, layout, typography, print and web design during the first year, with the opportunity to specialise during the second year.

A second chance at a creative career

success stories

The last few years have witnessed particular successes from mature students seeking a change of direction. In 2013 FdA graduate Melanie Smith went directly onto study for an MA in London and is now setting up her own business with mentoring from Santander following a successful kickstarter campaign. Mel told us that: ‘as a mature student returning to education, the FdA Graphics course was invaluable to me, I wouldn’t have been able to change careers and rediscover my love for design without this course being available. Many people, particularly women, need or want to change careers after having a family. Courses like this are a perfect fit and are enabling thousands of people like me to have a second chance at a career.’

In 2015 29-year-old FdA graduate Ollie Brown won Bronze in the national Star-Pack Packaging Awards for his innovative seed packaging. He joined the course as a self-taught designer but recognised the need to develop his conceptual skills and had hit a brick wall with his career prospects. Ollie now boasts a strong portfolio and has an exciting new design role with a design agency near Bristol.

About this course:

Run in partnership with the University of Brighton, this course offers a comprehensive range of practical design modules, delivered by leading graphic design practitioners. Projects are geared towards a balance of industry focused and practical design skills, underpinned by creative ideas development and an understanding of design process and theory. The focus is on the real world, providing you with the wide spectrum of skills you need to succeed.

Our students regularly win national and international design awards, achieve placements or freelance work, and have been offered employment with design agencies across the world.

You will also benefit from the college’s membership with Design & Art Direction (D&AD), close links with the Young Creative Network (YCN) and connections with professional design consultancies in Hastings, Brighton and London.

We welcome students from a variety of backgrounds, with a strong portfolio evidencing idea development and exploration of graphic design principles.

Areas of study:

In year 1 we cover a broad introduction to graphic communication, with modules that introduce you to a diverse range of practical and technical design skills. We support you to think creatively and produce work of industry standard. The Cultural and Critical Studies module supports your work historically and contextually while the Professional Development module begins to prepare you for the workplace.

Year 2 offers the opportunity to develop individual specialisms, participate in design competitions and develop business awareness and work-related skills through projects and work experience. Professional practice is a key feature of the course with all students undertaking work experience in Year 2.

The final self-initiated Presentation Project concludes Year 2 and provides the opportunity for you to showcase your work to prospective employers.

Henry Farmer, FdA Illustration

Henry Farmer returned to full-time education to take up a place on the FdA Illustration course. The work-based nature of the course is particularly suited to him as he is keen to work as an illustrator when he graduates. The course has enabled him to work on live briefs and gain an understanding of how the illustration industry works.

For his year 1 summer project, he created a zine which he mass produced and successfully sold. In addition, he promoted his work and his zine in Hastings Independent News. He is now looking forward to more opportunities and is learning more about how the University of Brighton Student Union can support his projects through funding.

In year 2, students have the opportunity to learn more about the industry and marketing. They also have the opportunity to involve themselves in HIFEST, which is a celebration of Illustration and presents the work of highly successful UK illustrators, alongside talks and workshops.

Henry will be exhibiting his work at HIFEST this year, where he will have the opportunity to promote and sell his work, as well as network and learn more about the industry, which he describes as ‘a brilliant opportunity.’

About this course:

The FdA Illustration programme gives students the opportunity to be individual, innovative and questioning. The course has breadth, embracing a wide range of approaches and media, working in a range of contexts such as editorial, illustration, or sequential narrative. All this is underpinned by contextual studies and professional development.

Students take part in a number of outreach projects in the wider community, and have taken part in placements in London and Brighton, exhibited in local galleries, and produced artwork for the lively local art and retail community.

Areas of study:

You will explore how meaning is conveyed through all visual images. The use of media is wide-ranging, with the opportunity to specialise in year 2 in print-making, type and image, digital technology, animation, book arts and mixed media.

For the most part, it is drawing in all its forms that will inform your experience on this course. It is the eclectic nature of the experience offered, together with an emphasis on the understanding of the critical and contextual dimensions of illustration, which will challenge you to develop your own personal style and working method. This, together with a strong emphasis on professional practice, will provide you with a sound basis on which you can draw throughout your career and in response to ever-changing professional environments.

Helen Pope, HND Photography

Helen Pope is a second year student, studying HND Photography at SCCH. She recently secured a workplacement in London with one of the world’s finest master black and white printer, Robin Bell.

During her first year, Helen was commissioned to work on the pier project for Hastings Pier Charity and has exhibited during Coastal Currents after gaining runner up in South Eastern Railway/HND Photography competition last year.

She works as a freelance photographer, whilst studying, doing portrait, wedding and event photography.

Helen said ‘At £3,000 cheaper a year than other degree courses, with a third year to gain a BA (Hons) the HND Photography course makes a lot of sense.’

‘The class sizes are significantly smaller, allowing for greater tuition input.’

About this course:

The BTEC Photography Higher National Diploma (HND) is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work-related emphasis.

The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector with national recognition by employers allowing progression direct into employment.

The programme is over two years on a 3 days per week basis.

The courses are taught by experienced practitioners and academic staff, all of whom currently work in the industry. Their knowledge is invaluable in bringing this course to life and giving you the best balance of theory with practical application.

You will be assessed by a carefully selected mix of assignments, presentations and portfolio.

Areas of study:

You will learn about the key aspects of photography, including both wet and digital processes and skills.

You will also have the opportunity to study specific disciplines that support opportunities to work as a commercial photographer and also as an independent photographer.

About this course:

Study is essentially proposal-driven or thematically challenged across all pathways, with strong tutorial support underwritten by an expansive visiting lecturer programme and workshop provision.

A studio working culture seeks to extend the depth of a student’s critical and creative understanding through a programme of study that integrates research skills, artistic and design endeavour in a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning environment.

Areas of study:

All are assessed independently of each other. The successful completion of all course units isa prerequisite for an honours degree award.

The course is designed to support research based practical investigation over the first two terms, moving this central practice towards a clear and resolved presentation of individual creative concerns and artistic intent in the final show.

Izabela Brudkiewicz, BA (Hons) Fine Art Practice

Izabela Brudkiewicz graduated in 2014 with a first class honours degree and was selected for Platform, an exhibition of the best graduates from the South Coast Degree Courses. She has had a recent solo exhibition at Project 78 Gallery and is currently studying part-time for a post graduate certificate in education.

Her work is performance based looking at issues of duration and boredom, by physically and mentally challenging preconceived boundaries.Izabela said ‘one of the most exciting things about the course is the amount of contact time with tutors, all of whom are practicing artists, which has provided me with a great introduction into the art world.’

‘The course really pushed me to locate my work in current ideas and practice. I would recommend this course to everyone.’

About this course:

The BA ( Hons ) Fine Art Practice has broad delivery of specialisms including: painting, installation, sculpture, printmaking, film and performance. Students explore these disciplines through material and conceptual considerations, giving the course a contemporary edge. The beginning of the course involves a series of inductions into workshops, allowing students to progress in to more self-directed study, while developing specialist areas of interest. There is an emphasis in contextualizing work within contemporary practice by aligning academic research with studio production.

In year two, students will undertake work experience. In the past our students have worked as artists’ assistants, in galleries in UK and New York, in education and in a bronze foundry. In year 3 students work towards a graduation exhibition whilst undertaking a dissertation.

The student experience is enriched by a dynamic visiting lecture programme of both national and international artists. Throughout, students are guided and supported by group debate, individual tutorial guidance and specialist seminars.

Students have the opportunity to curate and exhibit their work and will be prepared for working in the creative industries. Careers education, work placements and visits abroad (New York, Berlin, Istanbul and Paris) all serve to make this course vibrant and challenging.

Kristina Ploom, BA (Hons) Designer Maker

Kristina Ploom studied with us from 2012-2015 and specialised in Jewellery and Silversmithing. Kristina helped to set up ‘The Crafts Society’ through the University of Brighton which arranges group trips and events. She secured funding from the Student Union to curate an exhibition of student and graduate work called ‘Up Coming’ which was a huge success.

Kristina won an award from Goldsmiths where she was given a quantity of Silver to create a vessel, which can be found on their website.

Since graduating Kristina has secured a Goldsmiths Master Craftsman internship to work with Silversmith and Jeweller Stephen Randal.

About this course:

Understanding how objects are made including materiality and function is essential knowledge for anyone wishing to practice as a maker. This course allows a strong emphasis on design practice alongside making and it provides students with a skill base to establish themselves as a practitioner. Students take part in live briefs, competitions, exhibit work locally and will gain an understanding of crafts based practice and the context behind their work.

The course is taught by creative professionals who are active designer makers and exhibitors.Throughout, students are guided and supported by group debate, individual tutorial guidance and specialist seminars.

The beginning of the course involves a series of inductions into workshops, which then allows students to progress to more self-directed study, allowing development of specialist areas of interest. In year two, students will undertake work experience, which will be linked to areas of interest. Helen Newmark completed her HNC in Business part time over two years achieving a Distinction grade.

Alec Jones, HND Computing

After studying part-time for Level 3 BTEC Diploma in IT, Alec progressed early onto the HND in Computing and Systems Development because of his strength and ability shown on the BTEC course.

Alec said, “The HND is more intense, and longer days, but I still have time for a part-time job meaning I can earn some money alongside studying.

“It is a great mix of both theoretical study and hands-on practical work. We learn what to do and then we have a chance to create it to see exactly how the theory works through practical application. Being at SCCH is very different to a big university; we are not in crowded lecture theatres, and we get much more one-on-one tuition and support.”

Alec plans to join an apprenticeship scheme after completion of the HND and believes the course has given him a platform to show he is willing and capable. He hopes to join a successful company that will give him further experience to progress into a solid career in IT.

Matt Stace, HNC Engineering

Matt Stace has secured an Apprenticeship with a company who have sponsored him to study for a HNC in Engineering, whilst gaining experience with them for three and a half days a week.

VG Scienta are a high vacuum business based in Hastings and are offering Matt experience in researching vacuum and processes, whilst working within the practical electrical department.

Matt commented: ‘The people I work with vastly increase my knowledge and I always try to expand my learning. The HNC is varied and teaches a bit of everything, which is useful as when you are in a working environment, you need to know a little bit of everything.’

Matt studied for a BTEC in Engineering in Eastbourne, his hometown, before applying for an apprenticeship in Crawley.

He wrote a proposal to the directors of his company to ask for sponsorship for the HNC, and they agreed. Matt will be with VG Scienta for two years, and hopes to continue to study for a HND with Sussex Coast College Hastings, whilst staying with them as an employee.

Sadie Davidson, Health and Social Care

Sadie Davidson is a second year HND Health and Social Care student studying at SCCH.

As a newly appointed manager following the completion of her first year of the HND, Sadie has been able to combine full-time work with her studies and has taken the learning from college into the workplace.

Owner of one of the top five restaurants in the world - ‘Sepia’ in Sydney, Australia.

‘I attended college from 1989 to 1991 where I trained for two years under the great lecturer Mr Stephen Barnett. I was sixteen and ready to absorb as much information as I could. I didn’t really enjoy the classroom theory, but I thrived on the practical – filleting fish, meat butchery, making sauces, baking bread. The first year flew by and I hit a full credit with distinctions.’

‘These were informative years for me as a young chef and prepared me for the successful career I have today. I am extremely proud to have studied at the college and am eternally grateful for the rich experience the college taught me. The career of a chef is a life-changing experience and one that is a worthwhile journey to pursue.’

Top chef Martin Benn started his two year, full-time culinary school qualifications at Hastings College of Arts and Technology in September 1990. After college, Martin left for the big smoke, starting as a second commis chef and making his way up the ranks, supported by his parents and his education from the college.

Martin is now chef and joint owner of Sepia in Sydney, Australia, which has been voted one of the top 5 restaurants in the world, with three Michelin-starred French chef Eric Ripert saying Martin’s cooking was ‘one of the best meals I have had in my life.’

Jack, Miriam and Sarah, Cert TESOL

Jack, Miriam and Sarah spent 24 weeks studying the Cert TESOL Level 5 with PTLLS at Sussex Coast College Hastings, before being offered employment at the college, teaching English to international students.

Jack moved from London to Hastings a few years ago. He already had a degree in Journalism, but decided to study for the qualification to gain a skill teaching English, enabling him to travel the world whilst earning.

Sarah was working full-time when she decided she wanted a change of career and direction. Without a degree, Sarah believed she wouldn’t be able to teach, but after speaking to the Teacher Training Manager, she realised she was wrong. She signed up to the course and after completion, was offered a job teaching at SCCH.

Sarah described how a fellow student had learnt English specifically to become a homestay family, being paid to host and teach the students English during their stay in Hastings.

Miriam has a unique perspective, having learnt English at home in Italy. She has now gone full circle and is teaching English to international students at Sussex Coast College Hastings.

With training like this you can travel the world

‘I am giving back what I have received’ said Miriam. ‘The learning is half theory and half practical, we were teaching from the third week which was great. You do not need to know any other languages to teach English, I would say it is useful, but not essential. Visual aids are essential for learning and we were encouraged to always speak to the students in English. This pushes them to learn.’

Jack added, ‘We received incredibly good feedback and guidance – sometimes harsh but always helpful! The employment opportunities to teach in Hastings are fantastic, but with training like this you can travel the world and teach English anywhere you want to go.’

About this course:

This two year, part-time course is a University of Brighton qualification for teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (post 14/16 education). It is also widely recognised as the gold standard for teaching.

This qualification is split into two pathways; The Cert Ed is for people who hold vocational qualifications but who do not possess a first degree. The PGCE is the postgraduate qualification for those who do have a first degree. Both pathways are taught together over the two years and there is an option to go to masters level in year 2.

This course meets the new Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training – England 2014.

Areas of study:

Half of the qualification is based around practical teaching activities, classroom observations and other practical tasks, the other half is academic student study.

Therefore, in order to pass this course, a balance of interpersonal and academic skills is essential.

Entry requirements:

Entry is dependent on interview, presentation and written piece. From the interview and presentation, successful candidates will be offered a place.

Candidates must be qualified to at least Level 3, with proof of Level 2 in maths and English.

In addition, students must have access to 50 hours of teaching per year (100 hours in total) to be accepted onto this course.

Students will have access to a wide range of learning resource facilities and laboratories, as well as the University of Brighton’s sports facilities at Eastbourne and Sussex Coast College’s facilities in Hastings.

Most Sport Science courses now have upwards of 200 students in lectures (especially in the first year).

This course offers one-on-one guidance on completing assessments and coping with course demands from the lecturers themselves.

Smaller class sizes allow the students to continue their education in the educational environment they have become used to during Further Education.

Future opportunities in Further Education:

The college is currently reviewing the 40 Higher Apprenticeship frameworks currently available with a view to introducing more relevant programmes in 2015/16 and 2016/17.

A Higher Apprenticeship incorporates a work-based learning programme and leads to a nationally recognised qualification at Level 4 and above:

• Level 4 and 5 is equivalent to a Higher Education Certificate, Higher Education Diploma or a Foundation Degree

• Level 6 is equivalent to a Bachelor Degree • Level 7 is equivalent to a Masters Degree

High level skills and management level qualifications are increasingly in demand by industry and employers. This scheme is supported through the national apprenticeship framework and the network supports students currently in employment to gain this level of qualification without giving up work to study full-time.
