n the legion of Indian Corporate Captains and IIndustry Leaders, if there is one person who is looked upon with admiration and reverence – it is Mr. A.M. Naik, Group Executive Chairman, Larsen & Toubro. Mr. Naik, who has been steering the fortunes of India's largest engineering group for nearly two decades, is a man of extraordinary grit and conviction. In his long and eventful career at L&T, he has worn many hats – of a thinker, a master strategist, an entrepreneur, a leader and above all – a visionary.

Mr. Naik, who joined L&T over 50 years ago as a young engineer, strides like a colossus today straddling over a vast conglomerate of profitable businesses viz., Construction, Infrastructure, Defence, Nuclear, Aerospace, Shipbuilding, Hydrocarbon, Heavy Engineering, Electricals, Power, Machinery, Realty, Software and Financial Services. With his deep understanding of complex businesses, Mr. Naik has been singularly responsible for shaping their growth and internationalizing its operations, which has given the L&T Group a distinct identity of an Indian multinational. Several projects across the world viz., bridges, stadia, airports and metro-rail projects carry the proud imprint of L&T's name.

Mr. A.M. Naik – a visionary par excellence!

“Devotion is when you worship at a temple. My temple, my mandir is Larsen & Toubro,” is Mr. Naik's popular quote. When there was a bid for a hostile takeover of L&T, he fought like a tiger and did not let go off the company which he had nurtured with unconditional love and built with passion for years, thus demonstrating the determination of a far-sighted leader. He succeeded in ring-fencing the company from predatory forces and found ingenious ways to unlock its mega value.

He brought wisdom and extraordinary focus to his working profile by becoming a strategic entrepreneur. This gave him an excellent opportunity to expand and consolidate L&T's multiple businesses across verticals even as he was instrumental in creating manufacturing hubs at Hazira in Gujarat to handle modular fabrication, heavy engineer ing & power equipment manufacture; Talegaon near Pune to take care of defence; and Kattupalli near Chennai for the shipbuilding. His sterling contribution is reflected in several seminal projects including Mission Chandrayan and the INS Arihant.

Mr. Naik demonstrates a high degree of discipline and is an ardent patriot. He is a true karmayogi in every aspect of the term. He has worked relentlessly to keep the L&T flag flying high in the world despite trials & tribulations, and has created exceptional value for its stakeholders. His multifold activities have been centric to nation-

building, and providing cost-effective solutions to urban and rural India, encompassing infrastructure, roads, drinking water and power projects.

A facet of Mr. Naik's personality that is not widely known is his philanthropy. He gives generously and makes sure that the money he gives serves the i n t e n d e d p u r p o s e . O n h i s philanthropic activities, he draws inspiration from his family tradition. Both Mr. Naik's father and grand-father were teacher-principals who had devoted their life to the poor. Mr. Naik continues this noble tradition by contr ibut ing to healthcare, education and skill-building.

Accolades galore for Mr. Naik – the nation's high civilian honour Padma Bhushan adorns his mantle. He has been honoured with the prestigious Danish Knighthood – the Order of the Dannebrog Knight First Class for fostering Indo-Danish business ties. His ability to develop innovative solutions in the construction and infrastructure space has seen him rise rapidly up the leadership rungs of the Company. He won distinction by successfully helming L&T's largest infrastructure projects including airports in major cities, metro and freight corridor projects across India and the

Middle East. In 2011, Mr. Subrahmanyan was inducted into the L&T Board. The L&T Construction business has grown multifold over the last six years under his leadership to rank among the top 25 global contractors and by far the largest EPC player in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naik said: “Mr. Subrahmanyan is a top-notch professional of outstanding ability and commitment. Across the last ten years, and especially after he was identified as the likely successor three years ago, I have been personally mentoring Mr. Subrahmanyan and grooming him for the enlarged responsibilities of the CEO. I am confident

that under his high-calibre leadership, the Company will accelerate its growth momentum and continue to play a vital role in building the nation.”

Under Mr. Naik's guidance, he has demonstrated his leadership credentials by assuming apex-level responsibility for other businesses, including L&T Infotech, Technology Services, Smart World & Communication initiatives. He was also appointed the Chairman of L&T's largest investment at Hyderabad Metro Rail as well as the Naval Shipbuilding facility of the group.

Mr. A.M. Naik with Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, who took over as CEO & MD of L&T

Times' Business Leader of the Year award, CNBC Asia Business Leader award, NDTV Profit Business Leader of the Year, Gujarat Garima award among others. Mr. Naik has been awarded four honorary doctorates. He has also served as the Chairman of Board of Governors, IIM-Ahmedabad.

As a part of the seamless transition of organizational leadership, the future shall see Mr. Naik move from the centre-stage to the role of a Non-Executive Chairman of L&T providing advice and guidance to the Corporate Executive Management. He shall also have a key role in identifying and mentoring the next generation of business leaders to take over the important functions in the group companies.

Transformation has been Mr. Naik's mantra all his life. And we are sure, he will continue to touch and transform whichever domain he takes up and whatever new roles he plays. And we wish him luck every step of the way forward. Good luck, sir!

Ltd.-H y d e r a b a d , w h o i s executing the largest OB contract for S ingareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) at their Srirampur Mines. “Large-size mining p r o j e c t s h a v e h i g h e r product ion targets. To execute this, if conventional equipment are deployed, the equipment fleet will be too large. To obviate all this, we felt it prudent to opt for mining class equipment,” adds Mr. Reddy confidently. Mr. Reddy is a Civil Engg. graduate from Chaitanya B h a r a t h i I n s t i t u t e o f Technology-Hyderabad and has been associated with Sushee Hitech since 4 years. His father, Mr. K. Anil Reddy, Managing Director, Sushee Hitech, has been at the helm of affairs for close to three decades and has been

delivering projects with great aplomb in road construction, irrigation, water supply and urban development. Mr. Anil Reddy is an astute businessman with hands-on expertise and deep insights of the earthmoving industry. His focused and balanced approach to problem-solving and handling men and machines has enabled him to successfully lead Sushee Hitech into an established name in the OB removal contract segment. Some of the important contracts successfully handled by

Sushee Hitech include projects in Chandrapur, Ambikapur and Belpahad areas.

Sushee Hitech took up the first OB removal contract in 2014 in SCCL-Dorli area in Telangana for a period of two years. This was followed by another key contract at SCCL-Belampalli area for 4 years. Sushee Hitech has been successfully executing these projects by deploying conventional equipment i.e., 45 ton Hydraulic Excavators and Scania Tipper Trucks.

the father-son duo to opt for Komatsu equipment. “When it came to acquiring machines, we had a brainstorming session before deciding on Komatsu brand. L&T team guided us with technical advice on application engineering and project fleet optimization. We were convinced that Komatsu PC1250 and HD785 machines were of the right size for the project and we went ahead with them and we are absolutely satisfied with Komatsu's cutting-edge technology and superior performance.” opines Mr. Anil Reddy.

“The success of Srirampur project could surely be attributed to Komatsu Dumpers. HD785-7 is without doubt the best-in- class hauling truck in the mines! And the enormous support extended by both Komatsu and L&T in our operations have enabled us to achieve our targets in time,” says Mr. Shiva Kumar Reddy. On PC1250's performance, he says, “The product has several winsome features – fuel efficient and eco-friendly engine, faster speed, optimum bucket size and excellent product durability. In fact, we placed additional order for 2 nos. PC1250 Shovels with L&T after assessing its performance.”

Sushee Hitech team shares an excellent

re l a t i onsh ip w i th SCCL ' s s en io r management and works closely with them to address all professional requirements. “Site safety is of paramount concern and we rigorously follow all safety pre-requisites related to machines and mines. The traffic management on haul roads is our priority and we ensure that we adhere to all processes strictly,” says Mr. Ravi Vinnakota, General Manager, Sushee Hi-tech, in charge of the Srirampur project. In return, SCCL has also been supporting Sushee Hitech in resolving all issues related to land acquisition. Quoting Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi as his inspiration, Mr. Shiva Kumar Reddy feels proud to be part of the nation building activity with mining as his forte. “We have big dreams for the future. Very soon, we plan to move to the next level and bid for MDO (Mine Developer & Operator) contract. I know the task is challenging, but we are preparing ourselves for it. With our deep understanding of Indian mining, we would like to grow rapidly in the mining segment and become the frontrunners in the next decade,” he concludes with a smile.

In July 2016, Sushee Hitech signed up a major agreement with SCCL for one of the largest OB contracts in Srirampur Mines with monthly excavation target of 30 lakh BCM. To execute this project, Sushee dep loyed a la rge f leet of Heavy Earthmoving Machinery comprising 7 nos. 100 ton Excavators, 8 nos. 65 ton Shovels, 35 nos. 100 ton Dump Trucks, 60 nos. Tipper Trucks, besides Crawler Dozers, Motor Graders and Water Sprinklers.

Despite being a recent entrant in mining contracts, Sushee Hitech has gained enormous headway in the projects with its commitment to time and task. As Mr. Shiva Kumar Reddy puts it, “With Srirampur project warranting deployment of HEMM (Heavy earth moving machines), we initiated our capex to acquire the high-value fleet. Though our initial investment is huge, we prepared a detailed cost-benefit analysis and would be able to defray the expenses over the duration of the contract.”

It's the summer month of May with hot dusty winds blowing across the Telangana

state. We alight at Ramagundam railwaystation and drive into the mining town. Our destination is the project site of Sushee Hitech located in SCCL-Srirampur. A well laid-out office space with a meeting room, parts depot and site workshop comprise the camp office.

At the camp office, we are welcomed by Mr. Ravi Vinnakota, GM, Sushee Hitech, in charge of Srirampur site. An alumnus of Nagarjuna University, Mr. Ravi has been associated with Sushee group for close to two decades. A seasoned campaigner with extensive experience in handling mining operations, Mr. Ravi has been efficiently managing the project since its inception in 2016 which involves handling a manpower of 1200 people and a fleet of over 150 equipment.

We head straight to the mines guided by the managerial team of Mr. P. Penchalaiah, Mr. J. Harikrishna and Mr. Rajmohan Reddy. As we come closer to a mining bench, we are overwhelmed by the sheer size and majesty of Komatsu machines. Komatsu

On Sushee Hitech's trail in SrirampurPC1250 Hydraulic Excavator is working on the bench, cutting its robust teeth into the loosened earth and loading the material onto Komatsu HD785 Dump Trucks. The fleet of 100 ton off-highway trucks moving on the haul roads with the full load give us the assurance of the job well done.

“We started the Srirampur project work in July 2016 and have since progressed rapidly

despite the soil being of hard strata. We could mine around 180 lakh BCM OB in the last financial year, which is indeed an excellent record. We started on 850 RL depth and have reached 750 RL depth and we need to dig further to touch 650 RL sooner,” says Mr. Penchalaiah.

“Pc1250 machine has achieved almost 100 percent availability since it has been commissioned by L&T in our site. PC1250 bucket scoops 6.7 CuM material and it takes 9 passes for the Excavator to load each 100T truck. We have a total contingent of 35 nos. Komatsu Dump Trucks and they are working to our fullest satisfaction,” says Mr. Harikrishna.

Mr. Rajmohan Reddy quotes, “The trucks are our soldiers in the field and we need to ensure their fitness at all times. Our team of trained mechanics ensure higher availability of the fleet. Considering the significance of tyres in the overall mining cost, we have outsourced the tyre management to a professional agency which involves daily inspection of the tyres along with requisite maintenance activities to ensure better tyre life.”

With haul roads being the lifeline of the mines, Sushee Hitech also takes immense care in ensuring the haul roads are well maintained. ''We undertake periodic maintenance with Motor Graders and Soil Compactors to ensure that the roads are well compacted for heavy-laden trucks to move at constant speeds during monsoon”, says Mr. Ravi Vinnakota.

Srirampur Mines clinching the Safety Award from SCCL amongst all its mines last year has been a proud moment for Sushee Hitech. The company has been closely coordinating with SCCL team on various parameters and bringing in improvements in safe practices and blasting techniques.

Even as the first shift draws closer, we catch up with the Operator A. Sathish (30 yrs) who emerges from the cabin of PC1250 machine unruffled. “The cabin is quite comfortable with good visibility of the entire operation. All the levers are well within reach and it makes the operations easy. Komatsu machine is strong and powerful enough to handle the big boulders. I enjoy my work and never feel the fatigue even towards the end of my shift,” says Sathish, who usually is on the first shift from 4 am-12 noon. Sathish hails from Karimnagar and has completed SSLC. He had worked on

competitor models as well, but finds Komatsu machine the best. He had earlier operated a similar model excavator briefly in NCC Limited and finds that he has been lucky enough to work on the machine again. Other operators who share their workload on PC1250 are Srinivas and Anjaneyulu.

As the mercury soars, we move away from the Srirampur mines leaving behind its prized possession of men and machines!

Fomento inducts WA470 for mining operations ron Ore mining is the quintessential Ielement of Goan economy with a major

share of regional income coming from mining of ores and its associated costs of transportation and overseas shipment.

Iron Ore mining in Goa has been an established business, right from 1950s due to the presence of large reserves of iron ore and the efficient navigable system utilizing barges on the Zuari and Mandovi rivers. Goa mining was at its peak producing over 50 MT iron ore, when statutory notices in October 2012 brought everything to a complete halt. After a three-year gap, mining operations have resumed but with revised guidelines and with a cap of 20 MT iron ore production from the entire state.

Fomento, Sesa Goa, V.M. Salgaonkar and Chowgules are among the big names involved in the local iron ore industry. These companies have been active in deploying Komatsu equipment. They have been highly successful in the export market - with China accounting for more than 80% exports followed by Japan, Iran, South Korea and the Eastern European countries.

Established in 1957 as a mining company, Sociedade de Fomento owns iron ore mines in the States of Goa and Karnataka. It has supplied ores to Sumitomo Metal Industries and Nippon Steel Corporation in Japan for over 50 years. Fomento has entered into long-term contracts with several companies in Romania and China. Fomento has diversified its business by venturing into marine logistics and hospitality segment.

Komatsu's association with Fomento started in 2006 with the supply of D275 Dozer fitted with ripper. Today, Fomento is the single largest fleet owner of Komatsu Dozers in India - with 14 nos. D275 Dozers

and 19 nos. D65 Dozers. All backed by unmatched after-sales and field support from L&T. As a pioneer in the Goan industry, Fomento introduced Komatsu Hydraulic Excavators – PC300 and PC450 models followed by Scania Tippers, which have 18.8 Cu.M. body.

Significantly, L&T could break new ground in the Goan industry when Fomento placed orders for two nos. Komatsu WA470-6A Wheel Loaders. This was keeping in mind the production requirement of Fomento in loading high-density material such as iron ore from the mines onto the tippers.
