Integrating Equitrac with SUSE Linux iPrint ServersThe Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide integrates a SUSE Linux OES11 iPrint server with the Equitrac Office/Express print tracking environment. You can accomplish this integration by installing a number of cooperating software components on your network. The following table provides an overview of the required components.

Equitrac Office/Express Core Components on the SUSE Linux iPrint Server

Term Definition

Equitrac Office/Express printer registration

Information about a logical printer definition stored in the Equitrac database to track usage. A registration includes a printer name, a user-defined description and the printer’s assigned costs.

Physical printer The actual printing device.

Print agent A logical definition that represents a physical printer on a Linux server.

iPrint Manager When loaded, the iPrint Manager manages a number of printer agents.

Equitrac Component Integration

eqdred Communicates with the Core Accounting Server service on the Windows server (Linux version of Equitrac’s Document Routing Engine).

eqctrl Control script for eqdred. You can this script with start, stop, restart, and status arguments to perform the corresponding action on eqdred. The Linux RC system also uses this script to automate starting and stopping eqdred when the system changes state (for example, stop, start, reboot, halt).

eqacctg Handles events from iPrint when a job starts and ends in order to control if the job will be printed, held, or deleted by eqdred. Also does pagecounting details reporting to eqdred.

Chapter 1: Overview

The Equitrac Office/Express Print ServerThe Equitrac Office/Express print server components perform two functions on the SUSE Linux OES11 iPrint server: printer control and printer tracking.

Printer ControlOn a SUSE Linux OES11 iPrint server, the eqacctg process monitors and controls printing activity. When you configure a Printer Agent with accounting via the eqacctg program, it prevents unauthorized users from printing to network printers. When the eqacctg module is notified that a job is about to start printing, it checks with the Document Routing Engine to know how to handle a job. The DRE communicates with the Core Accounting Server to determine if the job can be printed. The DRE may allow the job to print, deny the job, or store the job in a secure queue for later printing. See “Advanced Printing Configuration” in the Equitrac Office and Express Administration Guide for more information.

Printer TrackingThe Equitrac Office/Express print server also monitors printing traffic to determine the size and attributes—such as page color, duplexing, page size, and so on—of each print job. The print server passes this detailed information back to the accounting server. Based on the print job’s page count and document attributes, and the administrator-defined costs assigned to the destination printer, the accounting server calculates printing charges and levies them against the appropriate printing account.

NOTE: The Equitrac SUSE Linux OES11 iPrint Server does not support PJL and SNMP page counting.

Interaction with iPrintWhen a network workstation generates a print request:

• The iPrint Manager calls eqacctg to signal the “job start” event

• Eqacctg calls eqdred and depending on the instructions from DRE, attempts to count the print data stream, allows the print, or tells the iPrint Manager to cancel the job.

• The iPrint Manager calls eqacctg to signal the “job end” event

• Eqacctg calls eqdred to report the end of the job along with information such as page count details.

NOTE: The eqacctg utility does not communicate directly with printers. Its job is to tell the iPrint system to allow the job to print or to cancel the job. The iPrint system continues to handle sending jobs to the physical device as it did before the Equitrac Office/Express print server components were installed.

Chapter 2: Installation and Configuration

Installation OverviewThere are three steps to installing and configuring a SUSE Linux OES11 iPrint server for Equitrac Office/Express:

1 Copy the files to the SUSE Linux server and run the installation program.

2 On the server, go to /usr/local/eq and run setup. This is the script that calls eqcascfg and eqctrl to configure and start the eqdred daemon.

NOTE: You can run eqcascfg at any time to change the Equitrac Accounting Server. You must restart eqdred manually after any changes you make with eqcascfg. See Running the Setup Script on page 14 for script details.

3 Enable accounting on your Printer Agents using the printer agent health monitor.

NOTE: You should first verify that the printer works as expected without Equitrac software in the process to help eliminate any simple configuration issues, such as if the print stream is not in the correct data format for the printer.

NOTE: If installation is not successful, ensure that the SUSE Linux iPrint server is communicating properly with the Equitrac Accounting Server. Ensure that the Accounting Server is online.

Chapter 2: Installation and Configuration

Installing Linux for Equitrac Office or Express1 Copy the installation package, Equitrac_iPrint.5.6.00.0000.zip to a temporary folder on the server, such

as the /tmp directory.

2 Install the package using the Linux package installer. Assuming that you copied the package to /tmp, the appropriate command would be: rpm –ivh --nodeps /tmp/Equitrac_iPrint.5.6.00.0000.rpm

3 Run /usr/local/eq/setup and respond to the prompts as required, including the name of the accounting server. Ensure that the accounting server is accessible via the DNS name or IP address you specify. To modify this name at a later time, run the eqcascfg command.

NOTE: The server’s root user must own eqacctg with the +s privilege in order to enable access to the DRE spool files.

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

Identifying the Core Accounting Server To configure the DRE, you need to specify the name of the server hosting the Equitrac Office or Express Core Accounting Server (CAS), using the eqcascfg script.

For example:

/usr/local/eq/eqcascfg –e your.server.com

You can specify the name of the Equitrac server as a fully-qualified name or an IP address.

Controlling the Equitrac Office/Express Daemons To start the Equitrac Office/Express damons on the Linux server, use the supplied shell script:

/usr/local/eq/eqctrl start

To stop the Equitrac Office/Express daemons, use the supplied shell script:

/usr/local/eq/eqctrl stop

To restart the Equitrac Office/Express damons, use the supplied shell script:

/usr/local/eq/eqctrl restart

To see the status of the Equitrac Office/Express damons, use the supplied shell script:

/usr/local/eq/eqctrl status

To automate the startup/shutdown process of the daemons, a copy of the eqctrl script is installed into the appropriate location. For a complete list of installed files and scripts, see Installed Files on page 14.

Enabling Accounting for a Printer AgentEach Printer Agent for which you want print control and tracking must be configured to use the eqacctg module.

1 Using a web browser, browse to your OES11 server and use iManager to browse to the iPrint tasks.

2 Select Manager Printer, and select the Printer Agent you wish to configure.

3 On the Printer Control tab, click the Printer Health Monitor link.

4 On the new page that is displayed, find and click the Configuration options link.

5 In the Accounting Autoload Command edit field, enter eqacctg, and press the Apply button.

6 Restart the Printer Agent.

7 Repeat steps starting at #2 for each additional Printer Agent to be configured.

A physical device, port, and print queue will be created in System Manager in the same manner as any other DRE device.
