Overview

This guide is intended to help install and configure the Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide. It assumes you are familiar with Novell OES 11, Novell OES 2015 and Windows network administration. The Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide enables accounting on OES 11 and OES 2015 iPrint servers by monitoring printing and reporting printer usage to an Equitrac accounting server.

Before installing the Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide, configure core Equitrac Office or Express components on your network.

For information on installing and configuring Equitrac Office or Express, please see the Equitrac Office and Express Installation Guide and the Equitrac Office/Express Administration Guide.

Any references to Windows servers in this document apply to Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 or 2012 R2.

Chapter 1: Overview

System RequirementsThe following Equitrac, Microsoft, and SUSE Linux components are required in order to configure print tracking on the SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide.

On the SUSE Linux Server SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP2 with Novell OES 11 SP2, including iPrint support (64-bit)

Or

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP3 with Novell OES 2015, including iPrint support (64-bit)

You must have the iPrint patch Novell-Open-Enterprise-Server-2015-GMC3

On the Equitrac Office or Express Accounting Server Equitrac Office or Equitrac Express 5.7 Core Accounting Server installed and configured

On the Windows Management WorkstationThe management workstation requires:

Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise/Ultimate, Windows 8 and 8.1 Professional/Enterprise, Windows 10 or any of the Windows servers listed on the Equitrac Office or Express Accounting Server.

Equitrac Office or Express System Manager

Equitrac Office or Express Accounts Manager

Server LicensingThe Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide are licensed per server. Each server uses a print server license on the Equitrac Office/Express core accounting server. If the number of print servers or devices exceeds the number of licenses you have, the unlicensed components will not record any printing activity.

For information on licensing components with Equitrac Office or Express, refer to the Equitrac Office/Express Administration Guide.

SUSE Linux iPrint Server TerminologyBefore you install Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide, you should be familiar with the following terms:

Integrating Equitrac with SUSE Linux iPrint ServersThe Equitrac SUSE Linux iPrint Server Guide integrates a SUSE Linux OES 11 or OES 2015 iPrint server with the Equitrac Office/Express print tracking environment. You can accomplish this integration by installing a number of cooperating software components on your network. The following table provides an overview of the required components.

Equitrac Office/Express Core Components on the SUSE Linux iPrint Server

Term Definition

Equitrac Office/Express printer registration

Information about a logical printer definition stored in the Equitrac database to track usage. A registration includes a printer name, a user-defined description and the printers assigned costs.

Physical printer The actual printing device.

Print agent A logical definition that represents a physical printer on a Linux server.

iPrint Manager When loaded, the iPrint Manager manages a number of printer agents.

Equitrac Component Integration

eqdred Communicates with the Core Accounting Server service on the Windows server (Linux version of Equitracs Document Routing Engine).

eqctrl Control script for eqdred. You can run this script with start, stop, restart, and status arguments to perform the corresponding action on eqdred. The Linux RC system also uses this script to automate starting and stopping eqdred when the system changes state (for example, stop, start, reboot, halt).

eqacctg Handles events from iPrint when a job starts and ends in order to control if the job will be printed, held, or deleted by eqdred. Also does pagecounting details reporting to eqdred.

Equitrac Component Integration

Core Accounting Server Functions as a Windows service Coordinates the activity of all Equitrac Office/Express components Handles account management requests; controls database access Calculates charges, assigns them to correct accounts

Equitrac Database Stores information about printing transactions, printing accounts and balances, printers, printer costs, and scheduled events.

Equitrac Component Integration

System Manager Enables the system administrator to:

configure and monitor Windows server components assign costs to printers and copiers

Accounts Manager Enables the financial administrator to:

manage user, department and billing code accounts perform account transactions

Chapter 1: Overview

The Equitrac Office/Express Print ServerThe Equitrac Office/Express print server components perform two functions on the SUSE Linux OES 11 or OES 2015 iPrint servers: printer control and printer tracking.

Printer ControlOn a SUSE Linux OES 11 or OES 2015 iPrint server, the eqacctg process monitors and controls printing activity. When you configure a Printer Agent with accounting via the eqacctg program, it prevents unauthorized users from printing to network printers. When the eqacctg module is notified that a job is about to start printing, it checks with the Document Routing Engine to know how to handle a job. The DRE communicates with the Core Accounting Server to determine if the job can be printed. The DRE may allow the job to print, deny the job, or store the job in a secure queue for later printing. See Advanced Printing Configuration in the Equitrac Office/Express Administration Guide for more information.

Printer TrackingThe Equitrac Office/Express print server also monitors printing traffic to determine the size and attributessuch as page color, duplexing, page size, and so onof each print job. The print server passes this detailed information back to the accounting server. Based on the print jobs page count and document attributes, and the administrator-defined costs assigned to the destination printer, the accounting server calculates printing charges and levies them against the appropriate printing account.

NOTE: The Equitrac SUSE Linux OES 11 or OES 2015 iPrint Servers do not support PJL and SNMP page counting.

Interaction with iPrintWhen a network workstation generates a print request:

The iPrint Manager calls eqacctg to signal the job start event

Eqacctg calls eqdred and depending on the instructions from DRE, attempts to count the print data stream, allows the print, or tells the iPrint Manager to cancel the job.

The iPrint Manager calls eqacctg to signal the job end event

Eqacctg calls eqdred to report the end of the job along with information such as page count details.

NOTE: The eqacctg utility does not communicate directly with printers. Its job is to tell the iPrint system to allow the job to print or to cancel the job. The iPrint system continues to handle sending jobs to the physical device as it did before the Equitrac Office/Express print server components were installed.
