Unit 4 PO2 Organising Digital WorkspaceWindow Positioning

● You should label your layers sensibly and clearly in order to make them easily identifiable.

● It is good practice to lock layers in order to make sure that you don’t manipulate them by accident

P6 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 PO2

When working on these two concept art pieces, I used several different types of brush - the standard hard round brush for the outlined edges, the classic cartoonist brush for the finer edges and the pencil tool for the coloured detail.

To add more detail to the drawings, I lowered the opacity of the highlighted layers in order to create a shadow effect.

I also used the outer glow in the effects tab to give the orange colours the glowing effect that they have.

Unit 4 PO2 M3 Task - Advantages of Digital Painting ToolsetsLayers

Advantages:● Doesn’t require starting over if you make a mistake● Allows for better organisation● Tone is easier to add with the opacity slider

Differences in regards to traditional art:● Traditional art doesn't have the flexibility in regards to

being able to disable and re-enable layers to get your desired

● Doing something similar would require tracing paper or something similar, making it a lot more expensive

Page 24: Survival Project - WordPress.com · P5 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 Survival Gradient tool Select the gradient tool (indicated by a grey rectangle) and click on which gradient you

Unit 4 PO2 M3 Task - Advantages of Digital Painting ToolsetsBrush-type variation

Advantages:● You can make your own brush types as well as

download them online● Large amount of customisation with sliders● Graphics tablet implementation simulates realistic brush

strokes● Easy to try out and swap brushes

Differences in regards to traditional art:● Good quality paint as well as brushes are expensive● Brushes need to be bought on a regular basis● Can’t customise brushes

Unit 4 PO2 M3 Task - Advantages of Digital Painting ToolsetsDigital colour palettes

Advantages:● Easier and faster to find colours● Doesn’t require mixing colours to find the one you need● Allows you to manually input RGB and hex codes to

help find your desired colour

Differences in regards to traditional methods:● Finding your desired colour requires mixing colours● Messier● Doesn’t have the same ability to save values of colour

(i.e RGB values)

Unit 4 PO2, P7Composition

● Broken into foreground, midground and background. Consists of largely a muted navy/purple colour with some use of a light, fluorescent blue in the fore and background.

Perspective

● Low angle shot, connotes the strength of the character and also the threats presented (sharks).

Proportion

● Background and foreground figures are proportioned realistically, and seem to be naturally proportioned.

Digital Techniques

● Digital colour palette blending (motion blur effect on the water drips). Layering of back, mid and foreground. USe of glow effect/tool in the light blues featured.

Unit 4 PO2, P7Composition

● Split into a foreground, midground and background. Primarily consists of muted greens and greys with some tints of

Perspective

● Low angle shot used to make the focus point (the robot) look smaller in comparison to the subjects in the background, this implies the vastness of the game world.

Proportion

● Unnatural (small head, large body and extremely long arms - one bigger than the other).

Digital Techniques

● Digital colour palette. Use of blur tool (in background elements). Fore, mid and background are utilising photoshop layers. Use of lens flare render tool in the lens flares/sun beams on the right.

My Unity Environment

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkHealth bar

Health bar at full

For my health bar, I decided to go with red, blue and green on top of a bright blue. I went with a bright blue in order to make it eye catching. I went with red to represent health because it traditionally represents health. I went with blue for oxygen because the sky is blue and we associate it with breathing. I chose green for the stamina bar because it’s associated with endurance.

Health bars slightly depleted

Page 30: Survival Project - WordPress.com · P5 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 Survival Gradient tool Select the gradient tool (indicated by a grey rectangle) and click on which gradient you

Unit 5 - Unity Survival Work

For my inventory design, I stuck to the same theme as my health bar in order to keep things consistent and to connote the sci-fi theme of my environment. Whilst the character collects the pickups around the environment, the number of items in the inventory increases.

Empty inventory

More full inventory

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkMain Menu

For my main menu design, I decided to go with a computer monitor-style design similar to my inventory and health bar design in order to keep things consistent. If the “start” button is pressed, the game begins, if the “settings” button is pressed, a settings menu is displayed and if “quit” is pressed, the program ends.

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkCollect item script

This script allows the player to pick up items (gask mask + first aid kit) and in doing so, the health bar/oxygen bar increases based on the pickup and the item is added to the inventory.

Page 33: Survival Project - WordPress.com · P5 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 Survival Gradient tool Select the gradient tool (indicated by a grey rectangle) and click on which gradient you

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkHealth bar script

This script ties the “curOxy” and “curHealth” values to the OxygenBar and HealthBar sliders, meaning the health and oxygen bars in the health bar go down proportionally to the curHealth and curOxy values.

Page 34: Survival Project - WordPress.com · P5 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 Survival Gradient tool Select the gradient tool (indicated by a grey rectangle) and click on which gradient you

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkScore script

This script handles the inventory - it locks the FPC when the “i” button is pressed and displays the inventory, which displays the number of items the player has picked up (also handled in this script)

Page 35: Survival Project - WordPress.com · P5 Task - Survival Project Unit 4 Survival Gradient tool Select the gradient tool (indicated by a grey rectangle) and click on which gradient you

Unit 5 - Unity Survival WorkWalk script

This script ties the players health to their movement speed - meaning that as the player’s health decreases, their walk speed decreases proportionally.
