About This Installation Guide
This installation guide describes how to upgrade the Surveyor Autosampler to a Surveyor Autosampler Plus.
To upgrade the autosampler, you must replace the following hardware components: the needle tubing assembly, the autosampler injection port, the injection valve, and the transfer tube.
After you modify the hardware, you must upgrade the autosampler firmware. To operate the autosampler from ChromQuest™, you must also upgrade the software.

Installing the Needle and the Needle Tubing
This chapter describes how to remove the one-piece needle tubing assembly shown in Figure 1, and how to install the needle assembly shown in Figure 2 and the needle tubing assembly shown in Figure 3.
To install the new needle assembly and needle tubing assembly, follow these steps:

Step 1: Removing the Surveyor AS Needle Assembly The Surveyor AS needle assembly consists of an integrated needle tubing and needle.
To remove the one-piece needle (with tubing) assembly
1. Set the XYZ arm of the autosampler to the needle removal position:
• For ChromQuest
From the Instrument Window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to open the Direct Controls Dialog box. Select the Position Arm to Replace Needle direct command, and then click Submit.
• For Xcalibur
From the Instrument Setup Window, choose Surveyor AS > Direct Commands to open the Direct Commands Dialog box. Select the Needle Removal direct command from the list, and then click Apply.
The XYZ arm moves to the front center of the tray compartment, and then the needle descends to approximately one inch below its home position. Figure 4 shows the XYZ arm set to the needle removal position.

2. To detach the needle from the needle mount, pull the needle latch forward, an then slide the needle upward, out of the needle mount.
3. Detach the needle tubing from the bracket on the XYZ arm.
4. Send the XYZ arm to the back of the tray compartment:
• For ChromQuest
From the Instrument window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to open the Direct Controls Dialog box. Select the Position Arm To Access Tray direct command, and then click Submit.
• For Xcalibur
From the Instrument Setup window, choose Surveyor AS > Direct Control to open the Direct Commands dialog box. Select the Position Arm To Access Tray direct command, and then click Apply.
5. Pull the needle tubing forward to remove it from the bracket on the left wall of the tray compartment. Figure 5 shows the location of the bracket.
The PVC retainer is the last item that secures the needle tubing within the tray compartment.

6. Gently pull the needle tubing upward to release the retainer, and then remove the needle assembly from the autosampler.

7. Dismount the syringe drive assembly from its three mounting pins (see Figure 6). Do not detach the syringe drive cable from the autosampler.

CAUTION Wear gloves to avoid skin contact with the solvent contained in the needle tubing.

8. Remove the one-piece needle assembly from the right side of the syringe valve (see Figure 7).

9. Remount the syringe drive assembly.
Step 2: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle AssemblyTo install the Surveyor AS Plus needle assembly
1. Set the XYZ arm to the needle removal position as described in “Step 1: Removing the Surveyor AS Needle Assembly” on page 4.
2. Carefully slide the needle into the needle mount until the needle flag meets resistance, and then push the latch nut backward (see Figure 8).

IMPORTANT Do not attempt to remove the needle unless the XYZ arm is in the needle removal position. The needle removal position allows you to slide the needle upward without bending it.

Step 3: Installing the Surveyor AS Plus Needle Tubing AssemblyTo install the needle tubing assembly
1. Measure the length of the needle tubing between the end of the internally-threaded fitting and the black shrink-wrap marker. The length should be approximately 16.5 cm (6.5 in.), as shown in Figure 3.
2. Connect the internally-threaded fitting of the needle tubing assembly to the 10-32 nut of the needle assembly.
3. Secure the needle tubing:
a. Thread the tubing through the XYZ arm bracket (under-over-under) as shown in Figure 9. Allow sufficient play in the tubing (see step 1) so that the XYZ arm can move freely within the tray compartment. The black shrink-wrap marker must be cradled in the bracket.

b. Insert the two prongs of the needle tubing guide into the holes in the X-axis arm (see Figure 11).

c. Set the XYZ arm to the back of the tray compartment as described in step 4 on page 5.

d. Slide the tubing into the bracket on the left wall of the tray compartment (see Figure 11).

e. Push the PVC retainer (red or black) below the stainless steel Y-axis runner (see Figure 5 on page 6.
f. Insert the tubing into the solvent tubing clamp on the front-left side of the autosampler (see Figure 4 on page 5).
g. Attach the adhesive cable clamp to the front of the wash bottle bracket, and then slide the needle tubing under the clamp (see Figure 12).
4. Connect the needle tubing into the right side of the syringe valve (see Figure 12).

5. After you install the needle tubing assembly, home the position of the XYZ arm:
• For ChromQuest
From the Instrument Window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to access the Direct Controls Dialog box. Select the Go To Home direct command, and then click Submit.
• For Xcalibur
From the Instrument Setup Window, choose Surveyor AS > Direct Commands to open the Direct Commands Dialog box. Select the Set Arm To Home Position direct command, and then click Apply.
The home position of the XYZ arm is directly behind the wash station.

Installing the Injection Valve
This chapter describes how to replace the Rheodyne injection valve with a Valco injection valve.
Required tools:
• 1/4-in. open-end wrench
• Phillips head screwdriver
To install the Valco injection valve, follow these steps:
• Step 1: Removing the Rheodyne Injection Valve

1. If the autosampler is connected to an LC pump, turn off the LC pump flow if you have not already done so.
2. Disconnect the tubing from ports 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the injection valve. Use a 1/4-in. open-end wrench, if necessary. Figure 13 shows the tubing connections to the Rheodyne injection valve.

3. Unscrew the two Phillips head screws that secure the injection valve to the autosampler (see Figure 14). Set the screws aside.
You reuse the screws to secure the Valco injection valve to the autosampler.

1. Check the position of the injector drive. It should be in the inject position (see Figure 15).

2. Ensure that the drive shaft of the injection valve is in the Inject position (see Figure 16).

3. Insert the drive shaft of the Valco injection valve into the injector drive until the drive shaft clicks in place.
4. Insert the two Phillips head screws into the holes in the lower-left and upper-right corners of the injection valve mounting plate. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws.

5. Reconnect the waste line to port 3 (see Figure 17).
6. Reconnect the tubing to ports 5 and 6 (Figure 17).
7. Connect a sample loop to ports 1 and 4.
Note A 25 μL sample loop comes with the Valco injection valve.
Note If you are controlling the autosampler from the ChromQuest data system, check the configured sample loop size after you upgrade the software to ensure that it matches the sample loop. If you make a Full Loop injection with an injection volume that differs from the configured sample loop size, ChromQuest stops the run.

Replacing the Transfer Tubing and the Injection Port
This chapter describes how to install the transfer tubing, injection port, and retainer clip for the Surveyor Autosampler Plus.
To install the new hardware, follow these steps:
• Step 1: Removing the Transfer Tube and Injection Port

1. Use both hands to dismount the syringe drive assembly. Pull the bottom of the assembly straight out, away from the mounting studs, and then lift the assembly up and out of the tray compartment. Figure 18 shows the syringe drive assembly being removed from the autosampler.
Note Do not detach the cable on the back of the syringe drive assembly from the autosampler.

2. Unscrew the fitting that connects the transfer tube to the injection valve if you have not already done so.
3. Pull the one-piece fitting off the free end of the transfer tube.
4. Pull the free end of the transfer tube into the tray compartment through the hole between the tray compartment and the column oven compartment (see Figure 19).

5. Send the XYZ arm to the back of the tray compartment:
• For ChromQuest
From the Instrument window, choose Control > Instrument Status. Click the Surveyor AS tab. Click Diagnostics, and then click the Direct Control tab to open the Direct Controls dialog box. Select the Position Arm to Access Tray direct command, and then click Submit.
• For Xcalibur

6. Remove the aluminum retainer from the wash station housing. Pull the retainer forward until the circular notch meets the screw, and then pull the retainer upward to remove it from the autosampler.

7. Pull the injection port out of the autosampler (see Figure 20). Set the spring aside. You reuse it when you install the new injection port.

1. Slip the spring onto the transfer tube (see Figure 21).
2. Screw the injection port onto the transfer tube fitting, and then slip the spring over the bottom of the injection port.

3. Insert the injection port with spring into the circular opening located in front of the Wash Station (see Figure 20 and Figure 22).

4. Align the retention clip with the slot located in front of the wash station (see Figure 22).
5. Using the retention clip to push the injection port down as you align the circular cutout in the retention clip over the alignment screw, insert the end of the retention clip into the wash station slot as far as it will go (see Figure 23).

6. Thread the free end of the transfer tube through the hole in the wall that separates the tray compartment and the column oven compartment, and then attach it to port 2 of the Valco injection valve (see Figure 24).
IMPORTANT Remember to configure the “Dead Volume” of the transfer tubing.

ChromQuest Upgrades
If you are using the ChromQuest data system to operate your autosampler, you must install one of the ChromQuest data system service packs provided in the upgrade kit, and you must upgrade the firmware version of the autosampler.
Firmware upgrade files have a .bin extension. The Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility enables you to download firmware files to your Surveyor instrument modules.
For the ChromQuest data system, the firmware files and the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade utility reside on the ChromQuest CD. Because they are not automatically installed during the installation of the data system, you must copy them to an appropriate folder on your PC.
This chapter contains the following sections:
• Installing the Update Files for ChromQuest
• Updating the Firmware for the Surveyor Autosampler Plus
Installing the Update Files for ChromQuestYou can find the firmware files for the Surveyor Modules on the ChromQuest CD. These files are not automatically loaded to your computer when you install ChromQuest.
To install these files
1. Insert the ChromQuest CD into your CD-ROM drive.
2. From the Windows™ Start menu, double-click My Computer.
3. Right-click the CQ icon to open the shortcut menu.
4. Choose Explore from the shortcut menu to access the contents of the CD.
5. Copy the contents of the Firmware folder to your ChromQuest directory.

Updating the Firmware for the Surveyor Autosampler PlusTo download firmware to the Surveyor Autosampler Plus
1. Prepare your system before you start the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility application:
a. Make sure you have the Surveyor AS firmware files that you intend to download and the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility on your computer. See “Installing the Update Files for ChromQuest” on page 25.
b. Make a note of the current settings of the rotary switches on the back panel of the Surveyor Autosampler Plus. You return the switches to these settings at the conclusion of this procedure.
c. Make sure that your autosampler is connected to your data system computer with the standard Ethernet connection.
d. Turn off the power to the Surveyor Autosampler Plus.
e. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to set the rotary switches on the back panel of the autosampler to 00.
f. Turn the autosampler power on. The Comm LED blinks amber to confirm that the Surveyor Autosampler Plus is configured for downloading the firmware.
2. Start the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility by double-clicking the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility application. The Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility window appears (see Figure 25).

3. In the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility window, initiate communication between the utility and the Surveyor Autosampler Plus:
a. In the Device Type box, select the Surveyor Autosampler option button.
b. Click Connect.
The status display at the bottom of the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility window indicates that a connection has been made (see Figure 26).

4. Under File Names, select the appropriate firmware files for the Surveyor Autosampler Plus:
a. Use the ROM Browse button to select the ROM file (ROM*.bin). The filename appears in the ROM box (see Figure 27).
b. Use the App1 Browse button to select the APP1 file (AS*.bin). The filename appears in the App1 box (see Figure 27).
IMPORTANT Do not interrupt the firmware download process. After you click the Connect button, do not turn off the power to the Surveyor Autosampler Plus or close the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility window until the download process is finished. If you terminate the connection during the download process or lose power to the autosampler, contact your local Thermo Fisher Scientific representative. The firmware board must be reprogrammed.

c. Use the App2 Browse button to select the APP2 file (AS*.bin). The filename appears in the App2 box (see Figure 27).

5. After you select the appropriate firmware files, click Download and wait for the download to finish. The utility notifies you when the download is complete (see Figure 28).
CAUTION You must select a ROM file, an APP1, and an APP2 file. Your Surveyor AS will not work properly if these files are not downloaded together.
Note Once the message Download Completed Successfully appears, you can safely turn off the power to the autosampler and close the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility.

6. To return to normal operation after you finish upgrading your firmware:
a. Close the Surveyor Firmware Upgrade Utility to terminate the connection with the Surveyor Autosampler Plus.
b. Turn the Surveyor Autosampler Plus power off.
c. Set the rotary switches back to their original settings.
d. Turn the Surveyor Autosampler Plus power on to resume normal operation.
CAUTION Turn the Surveyor Autosampler Plus power off before adjusting the rotary switches.
Note The Surveyor Autosampler Plus will not connect to your data system when the rotary switch address is set to 00.

Configuring the Surveyor Autosampler Plus
When you configure the Surveyor Autosampler Plus from either the ChromQuest or Xcalibur data system, you must enter the correct values or select the correct settings for the following:
• “Dead Volume” of the transfer tubing
The transfer tubing has a label that specifies its internal volume. The internal volume of the transfer tubing is a value that you type in the Dead Volume box.
• Sample loop size
The Valco injection valve is shipped with a 25 μL sample loop. For the ChromQuest data system, type 25 in the Loop Size box. For the Xcalibur data system, type 25 in the Sample Loop Size box.
• Input signal polarities
If your Surveyor Stack contains a Surveyor LC Pump Plus, a Surveyor MS Pump, or a Surveyor MS Pump Plus, you must select the check boxes for the input signals. For the ChromQuest data system, select the Run Starts When Pump Ready and the Inject When Inject Hold Signal Is “Off ” check boxes. For the Xcalibur data system, select the Pump Ready Active High and the Injection Hold Release Active High check boxes.

Completing the Upgrade
Your upgrade kit contains an adhesive label that you apply to the back panel of the Surveyor Autosampler Plus once you complete the installation.
If you are operating the autosampler from the ChromQuest data system, you must also install ChromQuest 4.0 SP1, ChromQuest 4.1 SP2, or ChromQuest 4.2 and upgrade the firmware for the autosampler. See Chapter 5, “ChromQuest Upgrades.”
Install the adhesive label as shown in Figure 29.
