Surveying Competition Overview Surveying has been a cornerstone of civil engineering project planning and execution for centuries. One of the most important tasks for surveyors is finding the location of known points. Teams will be expected to locate a hidden point using given coordinates and typical surveying equipment. Eligibility Teams may consist of up to five (5) student chapter members, including a maximum of one (1) graduate student. General Rules Teams will be given the coordinates for three (3) points on the Alabama State Plane Coordinate System (Northings and Eastings) o Two (2) of the given points will be marked plainly in the competition area with caps, stakes, and/or tape. o One of the points will be a buried “property corner” (painted nail) that has not been located. Only its coordinates are known. The completion will be timed. Time will start before any equipment has been assembled or placed. No writing may be done before time begins. Time will stop when the team turns in their calculations and the painted nail they located to the judges. Teams will be given a maximum of 30 minutes to locate the buried point and turn in the tape. Judges will keep the official time. A basic surveyor’s field book will be provided for each team to use. No other paper may be used for calculations. Aside from the provided field book, teams must provide their own materials. Disqualification Disqualification will result from: Failure to complete the task within the 30-minute time limit; Failure to locate the correct buried point (others will be buried in the competition area); Using materials not included on the list below;
