COURSE OUTLINE
Term: Fall 2015-2016
I - Course Code and Title: ARCH 4201: Survey Techniques and Analytical Methods
II - Credit: 2 credit hours
III - Nature: Core Course
IV- Prerequisite: N\A
V - Mission:
AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY-BANGLADESH (AIUB) is committed to provide quality and excellent computer-based academic programs responsive to the emerging challenges of the time. It is dedicated to nurture and produce competent world class professional imbued with strong sense of ethical values ready to face the competitive world of arts, business, science, social science and technology.
VI- Vision:
AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY-BANGLADESH (AIUB) envisions promoting professionals and excellent leadership catering to the technological progress and development needs of the country.
VII - Course Description:
Surveying is the art of determining the relative positions of points on, above or beneath the surfaces of the earth by means of direct or indirect measurements of distance, direction and elevation.
The knowledge of surveying is advantageous in many phases of engineering. The earliest surveys were made in connection with land surveying. Practically, every
engineering project such as water supply and irrigation schemes, railroads and transmission lines, mines, bridges and buildings etc. require surveys.
Before plans and estimates are prepared, boundaries should be determined and the topography of the site should be ascertained. After the plans are made, the structures must be staked out of the ground.
As the work progresses, lines and grades must be given. In surveying, all measurements of lengths are horizontal, or else are subsequently
reduced to horizontal distances. The objective of a survey is to prepare plan or map so that it may represent the
horizontal plane.
1
A plan or map is the horizontal projection of an area and shows only horizontal distances of the points. Vertical distances are shown by contour lines.
Vertical distances are represented by means of vertical sections drawn separately.
VIII- Objectives:
Projected outcomes of the course are: Engineering Survey is undertaken for the determination of quantities or to afford
sufficient data for the designing of engineering works such as roads and reservoirs, or those connected with sewage disposal or water supply.
Military Survey is used for determining points of strategic importance. Mine Survey is used for exploring mineral wealth. Geological Survey is used for determining different strata in the earth’s crust. Archaeological Survey is used for unearthing relics of antiquity.
