The side-bolstering is huge, to the point that some everyday users might actually find it a tad uncomfortable. If you hit the twisty bits, though, they’re wonderful, keeping you firmly strapped in place.

MyFord Touch continues to improve, but can still be considered to be the Achilles’ heel of the Focus. Screen fonts are small, and a bit of a reach while on the move. However, voice commands work far better than on the system’s original rollout, and while the learning curve is a bit steep, the system works well with familiarity.

Performance:Under the Focus’ new hood is the familiar 2.0L turbocharged engine, punching out 252hp and 270lb-ft of torque. Much more than what’s offered from rivals at VW or Honda, the ST’s straight-line performance is strong, punctuated by more than a hint of torque steer scrabble.

As a highway car, the no-shift passing response is very good. Lots of low-end torque means you can just leave the manual-only shifter in top gear and just let your left foot get you up to speed. Road noise from the 18” alloys and performance tires is less intrusive than in a Subaru WRX.

However, the ST doesn’t really wake up until the road gets twisty. The advantage of having a dedicated European performance arm for decades is that Ford’s hatchback offerings have been fighting off a much larger competitive segment than we experience in North America. Here, we contrast the ST against the GTI. There, they’ve got Peugeots and Renaults to contend with as well.

The closest rival for power-on thrust might be the Mazdaspeed3, a car on borrowed time, but unlike Mazda, Ford doesn’t tame the torque steer inherent in front-wheel-drive cars by cutting turbo boost. Instead, a trick front

bite into the corner and then scrabble out the other side. The more aggressive you are, the happier it gets – and the bigger the tire bill.

on the other hand, has engineered in lift-off oversteer into their little

hooligan. Pop off the accelerator sharply mid-corner, and the back end

comes around like its on casters. This behaviour feels tamed compared to the

first editions of the ST, but is still present and still something you won’t find elsewhere.

Overall, it’s a faster and more thrilling driving experience than you get from the more buttoned-down Germanic competition. Fly under the radar in the latter, or by the seat of your pants in this thing: it’s your choice.

Besides that, the ST is very well equipped standard, with the only real options being navigation and a package containing dual-zone climate control and a 10-speaker audio upgrade. The latter is as punchy as the ST’s turbocharged engine, but subtracts trunk space with a rear-mounted subwoofer.

Official fuel economy figures for the ST are quite good at 7.3L/100kms on the highway, and 10.2L/100kms in the city. Observed real-world economy is really going to depend on how often you ignore the upshift indicator and just floor it, but the ST can handle a gentle commute without being too painful at the pump.

The Ford Focus is a sensibly-sized and practical hatchback, suitable for ferrying around children and picking up the week’s groceries.

Ah, but this is the Focus ST, an over boosted hooligan with big wheels, big brakes, punchy

turbocharged acceleration, and a face like a disgruntled catfish. It’s a genuine hot hatch, complete with seats that wouldn’t be out of place in the Shelby Mustangs.

Ford has a long history of quick compacts overseas, but its North American audience is still getting used to these. When we think “fast Ford,” we usually think “Mustang,” but something with four doors and a usable hatchback is sometimes far more practical.

With the incoming all-wheel-drive Focus RS currently stealing the headlines for its STI-beating power output and hoonish Drift Mode, here’s a look at the regular strength fast Ford. It’s quick, but how does it work as an all-rounder?

Design:Building on the standard Focus is good news for the ST – already a sharp and stylish design, the Focus recently benefited from a refresh including a new front end and restyled 18” wheels. The ST’s headlights now include standard LED daytime running lights, and a power bulge in the hood.

Many hot hatchback rivals to the ST are pretty tame – the VW GTI, for instance, is a relatively genteel machine. Ford’s version is no wallflower, shouting its intentions to the world with a huge front grille, Lamborghini-ish centre-exit exhaust, and available rally-stripes.

On the plus side, people see you coming. On the negative side, people with badges see you coming. That centre-exit exhaust is also a pain for anyone who would wish to upgrade their muffler, as most aftermarket offerings look completely silly when bolted on.

Still, despite the big grille and obvious wheels, the ST can still manage to fly under the radar in a neutral colour.

The base model comes with a traditional V6 layout; this unit is a 3.7-litre unit producing an even 300 hp.

If you prefer something different and something more “European”, you can opt for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo inline-4. Using a twin-scroll turbo, this engine produces 310 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque - although you can argue that it doesn’t sound like a Mustang engine in a traditional sense.

The GT models come with the classic Mustang 5.0-litre V8. Thanks to tuned cylinder heads and valvetrain, it boasts an amazing level of muscle pumping out 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

A 6-speed manual transmission is standard fitment on all engines. A 6-speed automatic is an option on all models as well.

One feature old Mustangs didn’t have that this new one does is selective drive modes. Switching modes adjusts steering effort, and engine and transmission response. Also, the stability control can be optimized for snow/wet, sport and track conditions.

Speaking of track conditions, Track Apps are standard and accessible through the information screen between the instrument gauges. Launch Control helps you get off the line and GT models have line-lock for burnouts.

The new Mustang also handles curves and roads much better than its predecessors. Independent rear suspension is now standard and makes the rear end a lot more stable. And, while it is more eager to corner fast, the updated suspension also soaks up bumps, making long distance drives a joy.

EnvironmentFord raised the level of refinement inside the cabin to a whole new level. However, while the new Mustang has more interior space than before, it is still a sports coupe and therefore the space is limited.

The double hump dash brings some nostalgia, and the high tech centre stack design and electronic aids provide a better overall driving experience. The slimmer lower dash creates more knee room, even with the added passenger side knee airbags.

The stock front seats are good, but the optional Recaro seats are highly recommended as they are excellent for

spirited driving. The steering wheel is now smaller, but has several controls added to it.

The rear seats are small and only meant for short drives - especially considering the limited headroom on fastback models. Convertible Mustangs remove

that issue and use a 1-hand release latch for the power-operated soft

top.

Cargo space is quite accommodating on the other hand. The opening is now

larger and reveals 13.5 cubic feet in coupes and 11.4 in convertibles.

Ford’s SYNC communication and entertainment system, which is still awkward to use, is standard. In base models, music comes out a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input.

Standard equipment includes a rearview camera, auto headlights and wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, and push-button start.

Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include heated and cooled front leather seats, memory driver seat, remote start, dual-zone climate control, heated exterior mirrors, ambient lighting, illuminated door sills, reversing sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, and a universal garage door opener.

Thumbs UpWhile the Mustang looks traditional, it boasts all the modern technologies found in any other cutting-edge car. The car drives beautifully and with increased comfort.

Thumbs DownIf big horsepower is what you crave, the Mustang simply can’t compete with the outrageous Challenger Hellcat’s 707 hp. The biggest question is…. does this Mustang provide enough distinction to make a dent in this marketplace?

The BottomlineThe new Ford Mustang has all the style and presence of its pony car ancestors, while incorporating new creature comforts and technology.

2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang – it’s a significant milestone by any measures. The automotive landscape has changed considerably since the original pony car made its debut, and the 2015 brings the biggest change ever with the debut of the 6th generation version.

The new Mustang is entering a market filled with tough competition. Both the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger offer modern

interpretations of retro-inspired designs and are already making an impact so this isn’t the easiest time for Mustang to come back.

All-new for 2015, the Mustang is available as a fastback or convertible. Later this year, the Shelby GT350 will be offered.

The 2015 Mustang is the first to be designed for international markets - that fact is evident in some of the styling and engine choices.

DesignThoroughly modern, this new pony car is unmistakably a Mustang. The familiar profile is more muscular and seductive.

Ford started the design process with a clean sheet. Key Mustang elements are obviously present - like the long, sculpted hood and short rear deck - but, this model has a lower, wider stance and a lower roof. Wider rear fenders are necessary to house the bigger track as well.

The signature blunt nose and trapezoidal grille has been tweaked to reflect Ford’s contemporary styling. High-intensity discharge headlamps are standard, and have LED accents.

At the rear, there is certainly a more European feel, especially when looking at the lower diffuser. The 3-bar taillights return but are now LED and 3-dimensional - thankfully the turn signals are still sequential.

Standard models come with 17-inch wheels. EcoBoost Premium models wear 18’s, while GT’s are equipped with 19’s. Performance versions come with Brembo brakes, among many other features.

The interior compliments the exterior with a classic appearance. Material quality has been improved and comfort and space has increased due to clever packaging.

PerformanceMirroring the styling, the engine bay offers a mix of classic and contemporary design cues. The Mustang is available with three different engines.

DRIVE NOWDRIVE NOW

We're all up to our eyeballs in horsepower these days. It's a rising tide that floats all boats, from the gong-show insanity of the Dodge Hellcat twins, to the capability of your average V6 family sedan to out-muscle a mid-80s Ferrari.Happily, speed limits have been raised to accommodate all the fresh new ponies prancing under our right foot. Oh wait, no they haven't. There's been a 10km/h bump on some rural highways in this province, but for the most part you can sneeze at a gas pedal and be watching your car get flat-decked away by the RCMP five minutes later.But what if fun wasn't so much about the fast and furious side of things, but about that seat-of-your-pants scoot you get in a lightweight sportscar? What about something that's quick enough to be fun without being fast enough to be a liability?Well here it is then, the Scion FR-S.

DESIGN: A joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, the Scion FR-S is basically identical to the Subaru BR-Z; this latter is a bit more expensive and has slightly less aggressive suspension tuning. I've always felt the Scion version to be slightly better looking than the Subaru, wearing its distinctly Japanese styling well.The factory-sized 17” alloys look right sized for the car, although there's a large aftermarket these days to swap them out for something lighter, perhaps shod with grippier rubber. However, as it stands, it's a balanced shape.Fog lights are a dealer-installed accessory, and you can also order your FR-S with a TRD exhaust for a bit more rasp out the back. However, in factory-spec form, it's already pretty much got everything it needs.

ENVIRONMENT: The most direct competitor for the FR-S is perhaps the Mazda Miata, but the Scion has a few advantages for prac-ticality-minded folks. For one thing, it's a 2+2, which means booster seats fit in the back, or a couple of cramped adult passengers in a (literal) pinch. A rear-facing child seat can be crammed in there, but only if the person riding in the passen-ger seat is Bilbo Baggins.The general feel of the materials in the FR-S is just as with other members of the Scion range: inexpensive but durable. The seats are great, as is the steering wheel and shifter, and everything else is just, well, there. There's a little extra pad-ding where you might knock a knee against something during hard cornering, but the overall impression is that the primary focus of this car is driving, not comfort.However, it should also be mentioned that the rear seats fold down, making the trunk just large enough to carry four extra tires (to a track day or similar). That gives the FR-S just a little extra usability, which is handy if it's your only car.

PERFORMANCE: Under the hood is an odd hybrid of an engine: a Subaru 2.0L flat-four combined with Toyota's direct-injection system. It makes 200hp at 7,000rpm and 151lb/ft of torque between 6,400 and 6,600rpm. That's not a lot, and when it comes to the torque output, that's really not a lot. 200hp seems respectable on the surface next to hot hatches like the Ford Fiesta ST, but you really have to wind out the FR-S's four-banger to its absolute limit to access that power.However, there is sufficient power here to have a good time as it's not about the straight-line speed at all, but about what happens when you start pushing the FR-S through a few cor-ners. For 2015, Scion has tamed the FR-S's pervious tendency to be a bit tail-happy, but it's all for the better.Rather famously, the FR-S comes wearing a set of low-rolling resistance tires found as the upgrade on the Japanese-mar-ket Prius. A Prius? That's right: it's not important to offer brain-bending levels of grip. Instead, you want predictive handling and perhaps a tendency to slide out a little.Here the FR-S is a relative delight. Early versions of the cars are a hooligan's plaything, but you can't go around all day hanging the tail out in front of Jonny Law. The FR-S now turns in with aplomb and then zings through the corner with a light and nimble feel. The wetter the roads, the better, and up in the mountains of the North Shore, the little Scion was much more fun than some hugely capable and powerful all-wheel-drive twin-turbo Audi might be.There are a few drawbacks to consider if this is your only car. It's quite loud as a highway cruiser, and while the suspension isn't overly stiff by sportscar standards, a lengthy road-trip isn't something to be embarked upon lightly.

Still, slicing through the fog and rain at the top of Mount Seymour was never so much fun – and it didn't even involve being a total miscreant. Mission accomplished, little car.

FEATURES: Apart from the optional premium audio and satellite navigation, the FR-S comes relatively well-equipped as its base model. The touchscreen navigation is nothing to write home about, so you'd be better off just getting a secure attachment for your smartphone.Premium is required and official fuel economy is rated at 10.9L/100kms city and 7.9L/100kms on the highway. Observed fuel economy for mixed driving was right at 10L/100kms, very good for spirited driving.

GREEN LIGHT: Grippy seats; light and nimble feel; surprisingly usable for small space

STOP SIGN: Bare bones interior; engine lacks grunt; noisy cabin at speed

THE CHECKERED FLAG: Plenty of thrills in a compact sportscar that's still practical enough for every day.
