Surrealism“Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it
considers to be shackles limiting our vision.”-Salvador Dali
…what is it?
• Began in the 1920 along side Dadaism as a rebuttal to the war ( WW1)
• Highly influenced by Freud (dreams are unconscious feelings- true feelings)
• Still had art quality to them- using art aesthetics- just the composition and the concepts were very “odd”
Salvador Dali• Most famous of them all• VERY quirky character• Once made a video that was 6 hours of a man
sleeping.• Was on many game shows, and once he was
chewing tacks and someone asked him why he would do that, and he would say “ for the sensation when I stopped”
• Would literally wake up in the middle of the night and “record” his dreams
Dali, “Persistence of Memory” 1931
“Metamorphosis of Narcissus”
Max Ernst “Oepudies”
Rene Marguriette “ Portal of Values”
Miro “Carnival of Harlequin”
