Surabaya is Indonesia in a nutshell. The city was founded almost eight centuries ago, Indonesiassecond largest city has seen empires come and go. The founders of the Hindu Majapahit Empirewere here in the late 13th century to the 17th century and were followed by Muslim rulers ofMataram. Later came the colonialists of the Dutch East India Company.

In recent decades, Surabaya has grown into a cosmopolitan seaport and conurbation where 21stcentury hotels, apartment towers and shopping malls stand next to historic mosques andpalaces.

For centuries, Surabaya has attracted immigrants from theJavanese hinterland, the neighbouring island of Madura, and from all the islands of Indonesia. As a result, the city isan ethnic melting pot including an Arab quarter foundedby traders from the Middle East, and a Chinese quarterinhabited by the descendants of traders who settled heremore than ve centuries ago.

On the south bank of the Kalimas River estuary, Surabaya is a fast-growing modern city - the second largest inIndonesia and one of the countrys major centres forshipbuilding, heavy manufacturing and light industry. It isalso a major nancial centre, and ambitious newdevelopments for the future include construction ofSoutheast Asias longest bridge, linking the city with theisland of Madura.

The pace of life in the bustling city centre can be overwhelming for the rst-time visitor. Limousines, taxicabs, buses, bemo minibuses and becak scooter-taxisjostle for space on the busy avenues, where gleaminghotel, apartment and oce towers dominate. A few blocksinland from the waterfront, Kampung Arab (Arab Quarter),is a labyrinth of old-fashioned chophouses and narrow, colourful streets reminiscent of the citys mercantile past.Chinatown straddles Jalan Kembang Jepun.

  • transport option. Key points in the city are also connectedby city express buses, operating on two main routes. Forall services you can buy tickets on board.

Bemos (small mini-buses) operate on set routes but without a timetable, and leave only when all seats arelled. One of the best ways to see the local environs is tocharter a bemo for the day. You can also charter a bemofor a single journey on the same basis, and this can be themost cost eective way of getting around the city.TaxiSurabaya has plenty of taxis, but meters lag behind fare ination and negotiating a fare can be tricky unless youspeak Bahasa Indonesia, as few drivers speak any otherlanguage. Drivers should carry a rate sheet showing thecurrent fare to most destinations - check the fare beforegetting in. More sensibly, ask your hotel or restaurant tocall a cab for you.

Three-wheeled scooter-taxis (called becak in Indonesia) areubiquitous, but have no xed price. For foreigners, theycan often be more expensive than a taxi, and a becak rideis rarely enjoyable.PostStamps can be bought at most hotel front desks or lobby shops.
