Supporting Your Child’s Learning At Home
Your child’s learning journey does not stop at the end of the school
day. There are so many ways in which your child will learn to develop
their knowledge and skills outside of school with your help and
support. Detailed below are some ways in which you can help your
child to embed the skills learnt in school.
Reading
Children should read at home every day. Year 6 should fill in their Reading
Record with the book they are reading then ask you to sign to confirm that they
have read. They must do this three times a week. If they have their diary signed
five times in a week, they will receive a merit.
Spelling
We do a spelling test once a week. We practise a skill and test some words in
class. Children bring home the words they need to practise (or some additional
challenge words). These are tested again the following week.
Maths
Please support your child with their homework and encourage them to bring
home problems we have worked on in school which could be fun to look at
together. The Diagnostic Questions website has some additional questions in
the White Rose area if there are topics your child wants to practice.
Independence
Having their diary in school every day will be very important when children
transition to Year 7. Please encourage your child to take responsibility for
remembering their diary and keeping it up to date.
Homework
English homework will be project based. It should be handed in on Mondays.
Maths will be set on Thursday to be completed for Tuesday. Encourage your
child to take care of their homework and take pride in their work.
