1.GeneralMethodsColumnchromatographywasperformedwithsilicagelpurchasedfromVWRorAcros(SilicaGel60,230−400µmmesh).AllsolventsandstartingmaterialswereobtainedfromSigma-Aldrich. Ifnecessary, solvents were dried employing a MBraun solvent purification system. Startingmaterialswereusedwithout furtherpurification.DMF forphotolysisexperimentswasobtaineddryinsealedflasksfromMerckandtriethylamineforphotocatalyticreactionswasrefluxedwithKOH,filtered,anddriedwithCaH2.TEOAwasdriedwithamolecularsieve(4Å)andstoredunderargon. 1,3-Dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH) was synthesizedaccordingtoliterature.1 1HNMRspectrawererecordedatambienttemperatureoneitheraBrukerDPX-300orAV-400spectrometer.All spectrawere referenced to tetramethylsilane (TMS)ordeuterated chloroform(CDCl3)asaninternalstandard(measuredvaluesfordaregiveninppmandforJinHz). UV/visabsorptionspectroscopicmeasurementsweredoneonDCMsolutionsordirectlyfromcatalytic mixtures (DMF/TEA(5%)) using a Cary 100 UV/vis−NIR spectrometer from VarianemployingthesoftwareCaryWinUV.SUPRASILQuartzcellsfromHellmaAnalyticswitha10mmpathlengthwereused. Irradiationexperimentswereperformedeither inDMFwith5%TEAassacrificialelectrondonor or in DMF/TEOA 5:1 with 2000eq of BIH with 5×10−5M catalyst concentration. Freshsolutionswerepreparedbeforeeachexperiment inSchlenk flaskswith5mLofsolutionand20mLofheadspace, and theywerebubbledwithCO2 for20min to removeargon.Photolysiswasperformed with a 200 W high-pressure-mercury-vapor lamp using a water filter to absorb IRradiation and different long-wave pass cut-off filters to absorb wavelengths below the givenvalues. Filters (l>305, l>325, l>350, l>375, l>400, l>450 and l>500 nm) werepurchased from LOT-QuantumDesign GmbH and had a sharp edge of D= ±3 nm (transmissionspectraseeFigS11).COandH2evolvedweredeterminedbygaschromatography(ShimadzuGC-17AwiththermalconductivitydetectorandResteksShinCarbonpackedcolumnST80/100(2m,1/8 in. o.d., 2 mm i.d.) and quantified using a calibration curve. Measurements were done bymanual injection of gas phase samples (250µL) at least in duplicate. CO orH2 dissolved in thesolventwasnotconsidered, thustheTONofCOisonlyrelatedtotheamountdetectedinthegasphaseabovethesolution.ToestimatetheamountofCOthatwasproducedbyothersources, likesolvent decomposition, photolysis experimentswere donewithout the catalyst under the sameconditions and all turnover numbers of CO were corrected by these values. In these blankexperiments,noCOwasdetectedusingl>350nmcut-off filterandhigher,whileTONCOvaluesobtainedwiththel>305nmfilterwerecorrectedbyavalueof0.8after24hoursofillumination. LightintensitymeasurementswereperformedusingaASMETECTM-209LEDLightMeter. Cyclic voltammetry of (bpy)Re(CO)3Cl (1mM) was carried out in DMF or acetonitrilewith0.1M Bu4NPF6 as the supporting electrolyte. The measurements were performed with anAutolabpotentiostatPGSTAT204fromMetrohmusingathree-electrodeconfiguration.Asworkingelectrode,aglassycarbondiscwitha3mmdiameterstickwasused.ThecounterelectrodewasaPt electrode. As reference electrode, a non-aqueous Ag/Ag+ electrode (0.01M AgNO3 inacetonitrile)wasutilizedwiththe ferrocene/ferrocenium(Fc/Fc+)coupleasreference,addedtothesolutionaftereachexperiment.Thus,allreportedpotentialsareversustheFc/Fc+couple.Allscan rates are 0.1 V/s unless otherwise noted. The solutions were purgedwith argon prior toeverymeasurement.

UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry at room temperature was conducted with a commercial“honeycomb”thin-layerSECcellfromPineResearchInstrumentation,employingascreen-printedplatinumworkingandcounterelectrodeandasilver/silverchloridepseudo-referenceelectrode.2The constant cell potential during the SEC measurements were applied with an Autolabpotentiostat PGSTAT204 from Metrohm. The UV/vis measurements were performed in aSPECORDs600photodiodearrayspectrophotometerwithanoverallintegrationtimeof250ms(5accumulationswith 50ms integration time). The solutionswere thoroughly purgedwith argonprior to every measurement. For measurements under CO2 atmosphere, the solutions weresaturatedwithCO2gas.Theconcentrationofanalyteandsupportingelectrolytewasthesameasinthecyclicvoltammetrymeasurements. DFT calculations. Simulations at the density functional theory (DFT) level were performedusingtheORCAprogrampackage(Version4.0.1.2).3Allcalculationsusedtriplezetavalancepluspolarizationfunctions(def2-TZVP)basissets.4Inordertospeedupthecalculations,theresolutionof identity approximation (RI)with a suitable optimized auxiliary basis setwas used.4,5Excitedstate calculationsondimeric species (8,9)wereperformedwith thedef2-SVPbasis set, due tocomputationalcosts.Geometryoptimizationswerecarriedoutinredundantinternalcoordinates.Solvationeffectswereaccounted forby the conductor-likepolarizable continuummodel,CPCM,withanappropriatedielectricconstantandrefractiveindexofDMF.Forgeometryoptimizationsof theelectronicgroundstatetheBP86andB3-LYPexchange-correlationfunctionalwereused.6TheSCFcyclesingeometryoptimizationsandTD-DFTcalculationswereiterateduptothepointwheretheenergychangedbylessthan1E-9atomicunits(lessthan1E-14atomicunitsforBP86calculations). To ensure converged ground-state geometries, a convergence criterion for themaximumchange in energyof at least 1E-8 atomicunits (1E-10 a.u. forB3-LYPoptimizations)andamaximumgradientof at least1E-4withamaximalRMSgradientof1E-5was chosen.AllstationarypointsonthepotentialenergysurfaceoftheS0statewereverifiedbycalculationsoftheenergy second derivatives with respect to nuclear coordinates. Excited state calculations werecarriedoutwiththeB3-LYPfunctional,startingfromgroundstatestructuresoptimizedwiththeB3-LYPfunctional.Toaccountfordispersioneffects,theDFTD3V3.1correction(D3)byS.GrimmeincludingtheBecke-Johnson(BJ)dampingisusedthroughoutallcalculations.7Forthecalculationof excited states at the time-dependent density functional theory level, the Tamm-Dancoffapproximation (tda-TD-DFT)was used. Visualizations of electron density differencemapswerecarriedoutwithVMD.8

Due to the nature of the electron localization in the one electron reduced species there is adynamic equilibrium between 2Cl and 2S (S being a solvent molecule).16 Only the secondreductionprocessbringsabouttherapidcleavageoftheRe-halidebond.14TheseassignmentsandfindingsarealsoinaccordancetoUV/visspectroelectrochemicalmeasurementsperformedonananthracene-bridgedbimetallicRe2complex.15The calculated UV/vis spectra of the one electron reduced species (2, 2Cl and 2DMF) are inaccordancewith the literaturewith bands at 500nmandweak broad components around750nm.16,17

FigureS8–UV/vis spectrumof 0.5mM1 inDMFwith applied reductionpotentials at -1.62V (green) and-2.02V(blue)vs.Fc/Fc+.Forcomparison,thespectrumoftheunreducedcomplex1(red)isgiven.TheUV/visspectrumof1underdeaeratedconditionsobtainedatanappliedpotentialof-1.62V(vs.Fc/Fc+,abitanodicthantheredoxpotentialofE1/2=-1.75V,FigureS7)displaysthegrowthofanabsorptionbandat508nmaswellasanincreaseandslightblueshiftoftheMLCTbandfrom375nmto362nm.Thisischaracteristicforthegenerationoftheone-electronreducedrheniumspecies2 (2Clor2DMF).Applyingaslightlyhigherpotentialof -2.02V(vs.Fc/Fc+,FigureS7)anewabsorptionbandat574nmappears,whichcanbeassignedtothegenerationof3.Thebandsof2(2Clor2DMF)arestillobvious,becausethereductionprocessisnotsufficientandtheone-electronreducedrheniumspeciesisstillpresentinthesolution.Inprinciple,theappliedpotentialin our experiment should not be sufficient to produce 3, because the respective reductionpotential is much more cathodic. Thus, it seems that a dimerization to 8 occurs and thisintermediateisreducedmoreeasilyto3(seethemaintext).
