National and local charities have benefited from Transmec’s support over the summer months.

Thirteen members of the West Thurrock team completed a 12km walk in aid of Parkinson’s while the Redditch depot made a big contribution to fundraising at the nearby Bromsgrove carnival.

The walk for Parkinson’s UK took place around the grounds of Leeds Castle in Kent with the Transmec contingent raising around £600.

Handling supervisor, Dave Weston, said: “I suggested taking part as I was stunned by how many people had a relative or knew someone who had suffered from Parkinson’s.

“It was a great day, there was a good atmosphere and the sun out in full force. Everyone finished in a good time and enjoyed the walk; the

scenery around the castle was stunning.”

For the annual Bromsgrove Carnival parade, Transmec donated a truck and driver to host one of the event’s main charities, Libby Mea’s Little Angels, which supports the purchase of equipment to help babies in neonatal units across the Midlands.

Transmec Belgium has almost tripled its storage capacity with the opening of a new warehouse near Liège.

The new 4,200 sq m facility enables the Herstal-based division to keep pace with its rapid growth, which has seen turnover rise from 3.2 to 16.5 million euros between 2012 and 2018.

“It’s a really positive step and will make a big difference to the way we operate, benefiting our customers and our employees,” said branch manager, Yannick Lonneux.

Going forward the branch – an important hub for UK imports and exports - will operate two bases at Herstal, with its long-established 2,200 sq m warehouse continuing to be used for exports while the new warehouse will be a hub for imported goods.

Transmec is celebrating the success of its operations in Germany – 20 years after they were first launched.

Branches in Munich, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf first opened in October 1999 to handle goods to and

from Italy.

Since then they have grown significantly, now managing freight movements throughout Europe and developing their own specialisms.

“The last 20 years have seen a lot of developments for all the right reasons,” said

country manager Kurt Fleschütz.

“Our growth has been underpinned by the experience of our team, many of whom have been here

since the start. Customers certainly appreciate the strong relationships they have built with us.”

New branch manager continues to go the extra mileTransmec is eyeing further growth with the appointment of a new branch manager at its West Thurrock headquarters.Imran Mohammed, who has worked for the logistics company for 18 years, takes on the role having previously been UK finance director.

UK general manager, John Simkins, said: “Imran is the ideal person to help us build on the record results we achieved last year. He has an in-depth knowledge of the business and knows the team at West Thurrock extremely well.

“He is also well placed to help clients manage the implications of Brexit, having been instrumental in our planning and the achievement of full Authorised Economic Operator (AEOF) status.”

Imran is relishing the opportunities presented by his new role.

Issue 21 - Autumn 2019

“The quality of the team and Transmec Group’s branch network across the UK and the rest of Europe means there’s a strong foundation in place,” he said.

“The team certainly shares my passion for delivering excellent service and building partnerships. We’ll continue to go the extra mile, demonstrating

our flexibility in providing the tailored solutions that our customers require.”

Outside work, Imran’s interests include cricket and he plays for the Belhus club based in nearby North Stifford. He also enjoys travelling and experiencing different cultures. Recent destinations have included Istanbul and Crete.

Managing new cargo laws for customers

When it comes to transporting goods to some of the most remote corners of the world, Transmec UK’s freight forwarding department has got it covered.

Responsible for coordinating the global movement of sea, air and road freight for importers and

exporters on a daily basis, our experienced team offers a fast, efficient service to areas not covered by Transmec’s existing European network.Weekly shipments are available to the Middle East, Far East and the USA, with transport to all other locations available as required.“Over the last 12 months, we’ve seen a significant increase in the

amount of cargo we’re moving and we’ve more than doubled the volume of goods we’re transporting by air,” said overseas operations manager, Robbie Hanna.“Customers like the fact we provide a ‘door-to-door’ service and they know can rely on us to take care of all their shipping needs.”With a combined experience of more than 50 years, Transmec’s freight forwarding team has the necessary expertise to move both standard and

non-standard items. This includes servicing niche industries and providing specialist technical expertise.“We currently move forty to fifty tonnes of aircraft aluminium grade tubing and sheeting each week and this requires specific knowledge in terms of loading and securing the goods,” continued Robbie.“In response to customer demand, we’ve also launched a new service which sees us transporting wire, cabling and steel to Scandinavia and other parts of Europe via specialist coil well trailers.“We’re always looking for ways to make life as easy as possible for our customers and that includes developing new services. If a company needs something shipped, we’ll pull out all the stops to help and we love a challenge.”

For more information on Transmec’s freight forwarding services, please email Robbie Hanna at: [email protected]

Transmec UK recorded its most successful year ever in 2015, with turnover increasing by four per cent.

The growth, which led to the creation of 24 new jobs between January and December, was driven by a rise in exports and an increasing demand for logistics solutions such as storage, sorting and pick and pack.Commenting on the news, Transmec UK’s general manager, John Simkins, said: “It’s been a fantastic effort by the team and one which we’re

looking to build on throughout 2016. “Going forward, our focus will be on further expanding our transport services to new destinations and cementing our reputation as a pan-European provider. One thing’s for certain – we definitely won’t stand still.”

One of Europe’s most prosperous areas, the Emilia-Romagna region stretches across northern Italy from the Adriatic coast and includes the historic cities of Bologna, Parma and Modena.

Home to Transmec Group since the company was established in 1850, it’s an important area for agriculture and food industries, being the original source of Italian staples such as balsamic vinegar, Parmesan cheese, Parma ham and Bolognese sauce.

The ceramic industry is another key employer for the area’s 4.4 million inhabitants. Also a vital base for the automotive and motorsport sectors, Emilia-Romagna is the home of world-famous brands such as Ferrari, Ducati, Maserati and Lamborghini, as well as the Imola racing circuit.Transmec’s state-of-the-art headquarters are at Campogalliano, near Modena - strategically-located to offer fast, direct access to other parts of Italy and central Europe.Adrian Nicholls, Transmec’s group sales director, said: “Emilia-Romagna is a vibrant region which

is at the very heart of Italy and its transport network.“People across the world recognise its world-famous products and brands, many of which are carried by Transmec.“But UK exporters also have a big interest in the region and hundreds take advantage of our daily services to the area in addition to our warehousing operations at Campogalliano and nearby depots in Bologna, Reggio-Emilia and Rimini.”

From 1 July 2016, the International Maritime Organisation is introducing new regulations as part of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) which will impact sea freight.

Under the new regulations, anyone shipping cargo by sea must provide and verify the gross weight of containers being transported to the vessel master or his representative and the terminal operator as a condition of loading. Failure to do so will result in a breach of SOLAS. “These new regulations are designed to improve safety standards by

ensuring ships are not overloaded,” said Ian Davis, deep sea import export manager for Transmec UK. “It’s essential that customers adhere to them, otherwise they run the risk of incurring penalty charges and time delays.“We can assist by arranging for goods to be weighed as part of the services we offer. We can also handle all associated paperwork, thereby ensuring our customers’ cargo gets where it needs to when it needs to.”

As well as providing sponsorship we were there to accompany Trystan in pre-season testing with Simon Print, transport manager at our Redditch depot, attending his training session at the Cartagena circuit in southern Spain. The 17-year-old will be competing in the Aprilia UK Championship this year and after posting improved lap times at Cartegna he has high hopes for the season ahead.Simon said: “The testing has given Trystan a useful head start and if he keeps this pace up, and with the confi dence shown, he should be heading for top ten fi nishes.”Trystan is already proving Simon right with success in the early season round at Donington Park where he produced personal best lap and sector times in all four of his races,

resulting in two fourth, one fi fth and a sixth place in challenging dry and wet conditions.Trystan’s next races are at the Snetterton and Cadwell Park circuits.

Transmec continues to ensure Europe’s fashion-conscious consumers have ready access to the latest trends.

To help those looking for high-street chic, we’ve been hard at work to stock Primark’s fi rst Italian store in Milan, the home of Armani, Prada and Versace.Ahead of the store’s opening in mid-April, we delivered items directly from Primark’s distribution centre near Dublin. Around 40 loads were transported to Milan and this is now decreasing to around two loads per day as we keep stock replenished.

John Simkins, general manager of Transmec UK, said: “This was a very high-profi le launch for Primark and

we’re delighted to have supported them – everything has gone extremely smoothly.”

Sean’s rescue story reaches new heights A life-changing two years for Transmec team leader Sean Laidlaw has culminated with a national award for him and the stray dog he adopted in war-torn Syria. The Mirror newspaper’s Animal Hero Award follows a string of TV appearances and the publication of Sean’s book - ‘Barrie: How a rescue dog and her owner saved each other’.

A British Army veteran, Sean was working as a private contractor, clearing unexploded bombs in Raqqa in early 2018, when he came across Barrie, an Asian Shepherd cross puppy, cowering in the rubble of a collapsed school.

Although his advances were initially rejected, Sean gradually gained Barrie’s trust and the pair soon became devoted to each other.

Returning to camp and being able to train Barrie and take her for walks helped to boost Sean’s confidence and mental health, keeping his mind away from the trauma of working in a war zone.

“A dog always makes you happy, always wants to be with you. Having Barrie as a companion and an anchor has made a world of difference to me,” he said.

However, the pair were separated unexpectedly when, on a short trip back to the UK in April 2018, Sean’s contract was cancelled.

Determined to bring her to the UK, Sean raised almost £4,500 and enlisted the support of War Paws, a charity which specialises in bringing dogs home from war zones.

Sean and Barrie were eventually reunited in early November, continuing where they left off.

Publisher Hodder & Stoughton acquired the rights to the story earlier this year and Sean was heavily involved in the writing process.

“All in all, it’s a been a crazy year. I brought my dog home, I’ve been on TV, written a book and now won an award. None of it would have been possible without Barrie,” added Sean, who joined Transmec in June.

Transmec has taken delivery of two new trucks to enable it to meet the evolving needs of a leading customer.

Operating from the company’s Redditch branch, the 26-tonne vehicles are extra high and long to accommodate gym equipment that’s transported and installed on behalf of Technogym.

With load capacity of 14.5 tonnes, the lorries also have a wide rear tail-lift capable of carrying 1,500kg.

“Customers’ requirements are continually changing and we have to respond quickly. We knew that the standard truck dimensions and specifications wouldn’t be

sufficient,” said fleet manager, Simon Print.

Transmec’s UK-wide gym logistics operation is managed by its special projects division which employs more than 50 people across the company’s Bradford, West Thurrock and Redditch depots.
