Siemens AG is a global technology powerhouse that has stood for engineering excellence and innovation for more than 170 years. The company provides a variety of solutions including power generation, intelligent infrastructure and distributed energy systems, automation and digitalization.

Through its separately managed company Siemens Mobility, a leading supplier of smart mobility solutions for rail and road transport, Siemens is shaping the world market for passenger and freight services. Due to its majority stakes in the publicly listed companies, Siemens Healthineers AG and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Siemens is also a world-leading supplier of medical technology and digital healthcare services as well as environmentally friendly solutions for onshore and offshore wind power generation.

In fiscal 2019, which ended on September 30, Siemens generated 86.8 billion in revenue and 5.6 billion in net income. At the end of September 2019, the company had around 385,000 employees worldwide. Further information is available at www.siemens.com.

Facing speed bumps across a plethora of systemsWith continuous cutting-edge innovation comes the challenge of managing and analyzing vast amount of data. “We have a plethora of systems across the company and needed a faster way to transfer data, while making it

readily available to our internal customers,” says Axel Frank, Senior Solution Architect in the Siemens IT Department in Munich, Germany. Axel’s team provides a supporting function to business units, delivering data analytics and business intelligence platforms and strategies.

Why Talend? “Talend offers hundreds of connectors and helps us deliver and move data very quickly,” says Axel. With Talend, the team can now connect to various sources such as MS SQL, MySQL, JSON, Oracle and Windows SharePoint.

In a joined effort with Accenture, Siemens implemented Talend as their main big data integration platform to integrate most systems in a containerized setup with fully automated CI/CD pipeline. Within six months, fifty projects were in production in financial, logistics, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications, providing business users with easy access to data and the ability to autonomously create their own analytics.

Talend is deployed in Kubernetes. This helps increase flexibility and the ability to set up runtime environments quickly.

“We have had great teamwork between Siemens, Talend and Accenture,” says Stefan Müller, Senior Digital Data Innovation Principal at Accenture Digital. The Siemens IT team leveraged Talend Professional Services to help set up the platform, which they say contributed to its fast deployment.

“Because we have so many data sources and such a high number of requests, it was important that we get up and running quickly. Talend made this easy for us,” says Axel. “If there is one thing, I’d like to emphasize its speed of implementation. Talend can be implemented very quickly.”

Accelerating data transfer with a solid hybrid cloud strategyWhile Siemens has many cloud solutions including Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), the company also has data in several on-premises systems.

“The data exchange between the cloud and on-premises systems is vital to our operations but it’s also extremely challenging. In the next couple of years, we’d like to have a hybrid approach because it is more realistic than having all our tools in the cloud,” says Axel. “Talend is an important part of our hybrid cloud strategy.”

Data integration in such a hybrid environment is complex and Siemens will rely on Talend to transfer data between its on-premises and cloud systems. For example, Siemens runs its Artificial Intelligence data and prediction scenarios in AWS. While the analytical and predictive algorithms run inside AWS, the data is stored on on-premises systems. Talend will help transfer the data from the on-premises systems to the cloud for analysis and then transfer back the results in a timely manner to help with fast and improved decision making.
