Hippodrome CREATIVE’s Midlight

Dear Supporters We hope you enjoy reading your personal copy of Supporter Spotlight keepingyou in touch with the progress of all our work beyond the main stage andproviding an insight into future plans.

What a year 2016 promises to be! With new Chief Executive Fiona Allan now inpost, Hippodrome CREATIVE will be reaching out to an even wider range ofcommunities in the city. And we couldn’t do it without your help – thank youfor your ongoing support.

Our Heritage Project benefitted from your generous donations during The BigGive Christmas Challenge. Later this year you will be able to discover first-hand more about the history of the theatre ‘where everyone goes’ using thedigital Touch Table which these funds are helping to purchase.

We also turned back the clocks in our 2,241Reasons to Remember project tocommemorate the tragic loss of life during the Birmingham Blitz. Schoolpupils across the city made brick-shaped lanterns which formed part of thepoignant installation which attracted crowds, including survivors, over thethree day event. The front cover and pictures inside tell the story...

The Development team is gearing up for the Gala on the Main Stage in May.It’s our spectacular, flagship fundraising event which takes place every twoyears. We’re delighted to announce Genting Hotel as our final evening sponsorand look forward to working with them to raise funds for HippodromeCREATIVE on the night.

Remember there’s much more to Birmingham Hippodrome than meets theeye. We love innovative partnerships and the unexpected and hope you do too.Join us at a future fundraising event to help create some of the city’s mostinspiring education, access and outdoor arts work.

Thank you to everyone for the Afternoon Tea on the Stage.Looking through the memorabilia rekindled many happy memories.

Hippodrome CREATIVEcommissioned a very specialproject this autumn tocommemorate the 2,241 liveslost in Birmingham during theblitz 75 years ago. Working with Metro-Boulot-Dodo, the installation on the corner of St Martin’sChurch in the Bullring rag market was an emotive and evocative multimediamemorial to help us remember, and to never forget.

600 children from eight primary schools helped create the 2,241 lanternsthat formed part of the installation. Each schoolchild remembered a lifelost by creating a luggage tag featuring the name and age of the personwho perished.

Children also experienced a drama and dance workshop, and were visitedby a member of BARRAs (the Birmingham Air Raid Remembrance Association)to hear first-hand what it was like to live through the Blitz.

The project culminated in the opening of the installation with an address fromReverend Canon Stewart Jones, followed by 25 special guests laying a lantern. The installation was then in situ from dusk each evening with rolling archivalfootage and sound archives bringing to life the sights and sounds of thisterrifying period in Birmingham’s history.

The project was bought to life with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund, theLimoges Trust and generous audience donations.

Midlight

MidlightBirmingham Hippodrome CREATIVEand renowned British-Chinese artistAowen Jin presented a unique interactive light installation where visitors werethe creators of the show.

Our outdoor audiences were able to weave through a field of sparkling opticalfibres that change colour by reacting to the sounds they made – each lightresponding uniquely to each person.

Everyone enjoyed the fun element of being able to tweet a colour to@himidlight and watch the whole field change colour. It was a magical,ever-changing light show that encouraged creativity whatever age andembraced each person’s individuality.

Some of the most special moments occurred when live performers, includingwhen local violinist Yushan Li and pianist Vivi Yingrong Wang Wang performedalongside Midlight creating a dazzling and relaxing interaction between music, light and performer.

Look out in 2016 for more Hippodrome CREATIVEprojects in which you and yourfamily and friends can participate.
