Welcome to AWL’s thirteenth Supporter Edition of the By Your Side Magazine. The AWL team are busier than ever with our exciting Redevelopment advancing along at our Wingfield site. Our Australian-first purpose-built Animal Care Centre will be open and providing the highest level of care to animals in need by July 2020.

Adoptions are continuing throughout the Redevelopment from the AWL Edinburgh North site and all metro PETstock locations. I’m pleased to tell you that a total of 3,986 animals have found loving homes within the last year.

The AWL Business Services, which help to support the animals in care at AWL, have also seen advancements within the past year. AWL’s Pet Boarding Service has not only had a revamp, but also has a brand new services menu for holidaying pets. The new Pet Services menu includes fun options to make every pet’s stay at AWL enjoyable and relaxing.

AWL’s new Pop-up Shop in Port Adelaide is also turning heads with fantastic thrift shop buys for thrifters and bargain hunters alike. With a new locations and outfit, the Pop-up Shop is open and ready for business.

The committed AWL team continue to encourage a community that values the human-animal bond. Tango’s trek across state borders, through varied homes and different organisations is a testament to the strength of this bond and we were proud to be a part of his journey.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity. Without any government funding, AWL rely entirely on donations from our kind community. Our entire team and the thousands of animals in our care truly value your support. Thank you.

Hi AWL Team,

We recently adopted another dog from your Edinburgh shelter to bring home and live the best life she can with us and our previous adopted dog Dyson.

We adopted Charlotte who was one of the 11 or so puppies that recently were surrendered to you. Her name is now Luna and even though Dyson was a bit unsure to begin with, in the last week they have become great friends. Dyson checks on her when she cries for any reason, even if he’s outside at the time, and he loves to have her chase him (she’s more than happy to oblige also).

And they both love laying on the lawn together. Super glad we were able to adopt her and now they both have a home forever.

Dan Dyson and Luna’s owner

Ashlea Pet Cremations Collection Officer

Describe your job in a few words. Touching, emotional and full of love.

Do you have pets? Do I ever! I have Kevin the Pony, Gilbert the dog, Boo Boo the cat, Cocky the Galah, Kiki the Cockatiel, Booger the sheep, Salena Goatmez the goat, Fin and Mia the horses.

What do you do in your spare time? I spend all of my spare time with my horses and pets, and have been an avid horse rider for the past 18 years.

Tell us a dream of yours. One of my dreams is to one day start up my own mobile petting zoo to attend children’s parties/events, while also helping to educate children/adults more about the care and needs of all animals.

Why did you join the AWL Pet Cremations team?I joined the AWL Pet Cremations team as I have a love for animals and understand how much our pets really are family. I saw pet cremations as a rewarding career where I get to help those who have lost and are grieving for their pets. I like knowing that I can help by being part of their pets’ final journey.

What’s something no one knows about you? I don’t really have anything no one knows about me. I see myself as an open book and like to be as open and honest as I can be.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “No matter how well you think someone is doing on the outside, there is always more going on on the inside.”

Wayne AWL Volunteer

What is your role at AWL?My role at AWL is a canine walker and calmer.

Disposable Pouch x1

This pouch is suitable for the disposal of soiled dressings and instruments.

By Your Side I Supporter Edition6

Cohesive Bandages Blue x3• 5cm x 4.5cm • 7.5cm x 4.5cm• 10cm x 4.5cm

Bandages are used in a variety of ways to administer first aid for a range of medical issues. Cohesive bandages bind with themselves and remove the need for pins or clips to hold them in place. Most commonly, bandages are used to support or restrict the movement of body parts, or as tourniquets in emergency situations.

Non-Adherent Dressing x4• 2 x 5cm x 5cm• 2 x 7.5cm x 10cm

The Non-Adherent Dressings are sterile dressings that are made from an absorbent cotton filter enclosed in strong finely woven mesh. These dressings are typically suitable to be applied directly to the wound to protect is and apply pressure. Once applied it should be secured with a bandage. Hypo-Allergenic Surgical Tape x1

This is a gentle white-paper tape which allows the skin to breathe when applied. This tape can be used for a range of reasons during first aid, though is typically used to adhere bandages and dressings to wounds.

Disposable Scissors x1

These scissors can be used to cut dressings and bandages to suit wound needs and sizes during first aid.

Tweezers x1

These tweezers are medical grade stainless steel. They are suitable for removing splinters and lifting gauze or bandages from wounds.

Nitrile Gloves x2

Nitrile gloves are non-latex, powder-free personal protective equipment. They are snug-fitting and should be worn by those administering first aid.

First Aid Basics & Kit

Saline Solution 15ml x4

Page 7: Supporter Edition...Disposable Pouch x1 This pouch is suitable for the disposal of soiled dressings and instruments. 6 By Your Side I Supporter Edition Cohesive Bandages Blue x3 •

By Your Side I Supporter Edition 7

Gauze Swabs x2

Gauze swabs are made from simple cotton and are often used in first response injuries. They are ideal for cleaning wounds, as well as stemming and absorbing blood and other fluids from wounds.

Iodine Antiseptic x6

Iodine is an antiseptic fluid used for the treatment and prevention of infection in wounds. It is often used in first aid for the topical treatment of minor cuts, grazes, burns, abrasions and blisters.

Combine Dressing x2• 10cm x 10cm• 10cm x 20cm

Combine dressings are highly absorbent, thick cotton pads folded to form a flat tube that are typically applied in first aid to protect wounds and to reduce the rick of infection. The dressing should generally be applied with pressure and secured with a bandage.

Wound Dressing x2• Number 13 • Number 14

These wound dressings are absorbent pads made of light-weight cotton including a gauze bandage to secure the dressing. Wound dressings are typically used in first aid to control and stem bleeding from wounds. Both the number 13 and 14 Wound Dressings are suitable to control medium to heavy bleeding.

What should I do during a pet emergency?

Every emergency is different, but there are often similar steps that should be followed during each animal or pet emergency. The below method is a guide to administering general pet first aid.

Step 1: Check your environment for danger. What is around the emergency site? Will you be placing yourself in danger by assisting the animal in need? If so, wait for the threat to pass. If it is not safe, await emergency service assistance.

Step 2: Secure the animal in a safe manner that will prevent it from injuring yourself or others. For dogs, this may mean muzzling, and for cats, it may mean swaddling in a towel or blanket. While doing this, ensure that you are not causing further damage to the animal or preventing it from breathing.

Step 3: Asses the animal’s injuries. Determine whether the animal’s injuries are life-threatening and require immediate vet assistance, or whether first aid can be applied before transporting the animal elsewhere.

Step 4: Treat the animal. For minor injuries, apply first aid on the scene, then refer the animal to a local vet clinic. For significant injuries transport the animal to a vet clinic immediately.

Step 5: Seek veterinary advice. Regardless of injury severity, seek advice from your local veterinary clinic if the animal has not already been seen.

Emergency Accident Blanket x1

This is a portable light-weight thermal blanket which is typically used for the treatment of shock and hypothermia. The blanket is highly effective in the management of body temperature.

By Your Side I Supporter Edition8

Did you know that dogs don’t sweat like people? Your pooch’s lovable pant is their way of regulating their body temperature and works as their personal evaporative cooler. However, panting in hot weather (especially in humid climates) can be ineffective for your dog, and they will need assistance to keep from overheating. Heat exhaustion can be life-threatening and should be taken very seriously by owners. Cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and other types of pets are all also highly susceptible to heat exhaustion, and all need assistance to stay cool during periods of extreme heat.

WaterFirst and foremost, owners must give their pets access to plenty of fresh water in shaded areas out of direct sunlight. Adding ice to your pet’s water will also help to keep it cold. Ensure multiple water sources are provided in case of spills.

Cool areasIf possible, keeping pets indoors to enjoy air-conditioning over periods of extreme heat is the most effective way to regulate their temperature. If this is not possible, pets must have access to shaded areas away from hot surfaces like concrete or pavers.

Cool treatsFreezing your pets’ favourite treats in a container of water will give them a low-energy activity to keep their brains busy and their bodies cool. Place these treats on a tiled area that your pet can get wet and messy.

PoolsA shell pool filled with water and ice is another escape from the heat that your dog will enjoy. Keep the pool in the shade and off hot surfaces like concrete or pavers to ensure that the water doesn’t heat up.

SunscreenIf you have a pet with pale pigmentation, they are more susceptible to sunburn so where possible keep them inside or alternatively rub an absorbable, 30+, pet-safe sunscreen on their nose and any pale areas of their exposed skin (ears/nose/belly).

Keeping pets cool in summer

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR!

A pet can die in just minutes inside a hot car.

Summer is a difficult time for people and pets alike to keep their cool. With Australia’s recent history of scorching summers and record-breaking heat, keeping our pets cool has become more critical than ever before.

Page 9: Supporter Edition...Disposable Pouch x1 This pouch is suitable for the disposal of soiled dressings and instruments. 6 By Your Side I Supporter Edition Cohesive Bandages Blue x3 •

By Your Side I Supporter Edition 9

ExerciseWalk your dog early in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler, so their paws don’t get burnt on the hot ground. Remember that the surfaces may have absorbed the heat and will remain heated after the sun has set. Test the temperature of the surface with the back of your hand before walking your pet.

Cold towelsCold, wet towels can be placed on tiled surfaces for your pets to lay down on. If your pet is panting and looking distressed, you can wrap them in a cold, wet towel to help cool them down. Don’t forget about your small pets. You can place these cold, wet towels in pocket pets’ enclosures and can even wrap the towel around an ice brick to keep it colder for longer.

Signs of heat stress:

• Panting• Excessive salivation• Enlarged tongue• Red gums/lips• Increased heart rate• Anxious or distressed demeanour• Sluggish, listless or dazed manner• Staggering movements• Trembling or seizures• Vomit or diarrhoea with blood• Coma

REMEMBER: older animals; those with short, flat faces; or double-coated breeds are more susceptible to heat stress and heat exhaustion, please take extra care to keep these pets safe.

families who were keen to adopt him. Amongst the sea of applications, one stood out well above the rest. Little did Tango know that his new family hailed from a South Australian town he’d never heard of which was 4,150kms away.

Robin, Steve, Charlie the bearded Collie and TC the cat hailed from Goolwa. While they were Tango’s perfect family, the cost would be immense to transport him all that way.

Tango’s luck didn’t end there, though. SAFE Karratha reached out to Jetpets (Australia’s leading pet transportation company), who on hearing Tango’s plight stepped in to lend a hand. Gifting Tango his flight to South Australia, Jetpets ensured Tango’s journey was comfortable, and his unruffled demeanour shone throughout the entire trip.

Robin and Steve were eagerly awaiting Tango’s arrival and greeted him straight off of the plane. This joyous greeting set the tone for the coming days where he was welcomed into their home and family with open arms.

Only one hurdle stood between Tango and his ‘happily ever after’; his need to undergo desexing. Understanding just how vital desexing Tango was, his new family urgently sought to organise this surgery.

SAFE once again had a plan to help Tango. The SAFE team sought assistance from AWL. The AWL team had watched Tango’s journey through homes and across state borders, and knew that this dog had faced more than his share of burdens.

Tango is a tenacious fun-loving young man who looks on the bright side of life. He’s quick to smile and to give a wag of his fluffy tail, but life has not always been so easy for this kind-hearted lad.

When their landlord demanded their house become pet-free, Tango’s owners were left with no options other than to surrender their beloved dog. With this heartbreaking decision, Tango went into the care of SAFE Karratha; Western Australia’s largest animal rescue organisation.

Despite the farewell to his loving family, Tango didn’t let life hold him down and immediately moved into a temporary SAFE foster home. His foster home already had an adoptive brother for him to play with, which they did for hours-on-end; especially when their family would take them to the beach.

Sooner than he could have guessed, Tango had applications flowing in from

AWL was proud to assist Tango, SAFE and his new family with this necessary surgery, and quickly organised his visit to AWL.

Robin, Steve and his fur-brother Charlie came to drop Tango off at AWL and held his paws all the way to the front door. Though his stay was just overnight, his family were eager to see him back at home, happy and recovered.

AWL’s team were overjoyed to see this young dog’s spirit shining brightly despite the problematic path his life had taken.

Now, Tango’s life matches his happy disposition. He spends every day playing with his brother Charlie. He gets an endless stream of pats and cuddles from his parents Robin and Steve, and is pointedly ignored by his brother TC the cat. Tango has lovingly settled into the life that he didn’t know he was waiting for.

Defensive Aggression• Ears pulled flat and back against

the head

• Pupils dilated

• Facial muscles tensed, displaying teeth

• Paw ready to swat with claws exposed

• Rolling over to one side to better expose claws

This cat is threatened and is prepared to strike. It is showing another distance-increasing posture and warning that it does not wish to be approached. This cat has determined that it cannot escape the threat and is preparing to defend itself by swiping and biting. Do not approach.

The Anxious Cat• Tail held close to body (may flick out)

• Body hunched and muscles tensed

• Ears swivelled sideways and tense

• Enlarged pupils

This cat is anxious and is trying to avoid notice by decreasing its size. It is crouching in a tightly coiled ball, wrapping all limbs and extremities close to protect itself. This cat is ready to flee and does not wish to be approached.

Distance-Increasing Behaviours• Arched back

• Fur raised on back and tail (piloerection)

• Ears held flat

• Pupils dilated

• Whiskers pulled back

• Tail is curved and swishing

• Paws ready to swat if necessary

This cat is increasing distance between itself and others and is warning that it does not want to be approached. Aggressive interactions can be avoided if the warning is heeded, and you do not come closer. This is a defensive stance where the cat attempts to appear formidable to threats.

The Confident Cat• Tail is upright

• Ears forward and erect

• Pupils moderate (unless in very bright setting)

• Purposeful upright walk

The confident cat is ready to explore and adventure, engaging people and pets within its environment. This cat is signifying friendly intentions with an upright tail and an alert face with forward-facing, erect ears.

Comuni-CAT-ing with your feline friend is easy once you know the signs that help you to read your cat’s emotions. Your cat’s body language tells you most of what you need to know about how they’re feeling and how your interaction is likely to go.

AWL’s expert team have created a guide on cat body language, what it means, and how to read it.

Cattitude is everything!

Distance-Reducing Behaviours• Rubbing scent glands against

objects and others.

Glands:

» Temporal glands (sides of forehead)

» Submandibular glands (under chin)

» Perioral glands (corner of mouth)

» Interdigital glands (bottom of paws)

• Whiskers held to the side and forward

• Tail is upright

• Ears to side and relaxed

This cat is reducing the distance between itself and others, encouraging approach and showing that it means no harm. The cat releases calming pheromones by rubbing its scent glands on others and objects to help guarantee friendly interactions.

The Predator• Ears forward and alert

• Tail low and tense

• Pupils dilated with eyes focussed

• Body low to the ground with muscles tensed

• May ‘wiggle’ backend readying to pounce

This cat is within its predatory sequence of ‘stalk, kill, remove and eat’. Cats are predators and will naturally chase and kill prey, or show these behaviours with toys and during games. This cat is likely to pounce on whatever object or animal it is stalking.

The Confident Cat at Ease• Head and ears up

• Medium-sized pupils

• Body stretched out

• Whiskers held to the side

• Paws may flex in a kneading motion

• Stomach wholly or partially exposed

The confident cat at ease will stretch out on its back or side when lying down, exposing its stomach. It is calm but alert and accepts being approached by others. However, do not touch its stomach unless you know that it enjoys receiving belly rubs; you may just get a scratch.

Paw-some Adoption Partners The friendly, expert PETstock team have kicked another goal with AWL, reaching more offsite adoptions than ever before! Within the past financial year, PETstock adopted out 1,717 AWL cats, kittens, rabbits and rats into loving and safe homes.

PETstock’s team have helped guide adoptions with their expert pet knowledge and advice, and have assisted owners to ready their homes with necessary pet care items.

AWL animals are available for adoption from every metropolitan PETstock store and continue finding homes each and every day. Thank you PETstock!

A new generation of inspiring supporters Ruby, Rosie and Alessia are three philanthropic young ladies who prove good deeds can occur at any age. Seeing the work their school does in the community, the girls felt inspired to make a difference but were keen to help animals in need at AWL.

Deciding to organise a fundraiser outside of their school commitments, the girls held a fundraising event, BBQ and raffle to raise money for AWL.

With family members and friends offering support, the girls did such an outstanding job with the raffle and event that they raised more than $600 all by themselves.

This kind of philanthropy from three young girls is very inspiring to see and the AWL team were touched by the kindness shown by the girls. Thank you!

Round Up for animals in needThe Elizabeth Officeworks team have shown just how committed they are to helping animals in need by choosing AWL to be a recipient of their fantastic fundraising efforts. Officeworks raise money for charities each year with their own ‘Round-Up to Make a Difference’ program, internal teams and customers work together to raise funds. Customers can round-up the cost of their purchases to make a donation to AWL and the animals in our care, while internal team run competitions and fundraising BBQs. Altogether the team and community raised $3,094 for animals in need. Thank you, Officeworks Elizabeth and your community!

Q&Awith the CEO

AWL’s Lasting Footprints program

When I leave a gift in my Will, where does the money go? All gifts left to AWL ensure that our rehoming and rehabilitation programs can continue and that our facilities provide the best level of care to desperate animals in need. We could not continue our lifesaving work without our kind and generous supporters. Our team provides food, shelter, medication, vet care, rehoming and rehabilitation programs to more than 10,000 cats, dogs and rabbits each year. It costs AWL an average of $1,120 to rehome just a single dog and $795 to rehome a cat or pocket pet. As AWL receives no government funding, it is through the commitment of our compassionate supporters that the animals in our care get their second chances.

Why do I need to tell you that I have named AWL in my Will?Very simply put, AWL need to be advised of any gifts in Wills organised by our supporters so our team can plan for the future of the animals in our care. Our team also need to be made aware when someone is considering leaving a gift in their Will so we can help and offer assistance. The Lasting Footprints program has a dedicated team. Any animal entrusted to AWL through a Will receives a tailored care plan and home suited to their needs. When owners let us know that if the worst were to happen, their pet would come into the care of AWL, our team can plan for that pet’s future. Those kind-hearted people who have left a specific gift, a sum of money, or an estate also need to be known by our team so we can offer support throughout this process. Wills can be confusing and stressful, and AWL has a committed member of the team who can assist with advice and legal wordings. Our team also like to touch base from time-to-time whether it’s just for a chat or to lend a hand, so knowing our supporters is vital.

AWL seems to be running well, why do you need more money?Without the Lasting Footprints program, we could not continue providing our vital services to pets, people and our community. AWL is lucky to have a generous community of major donors and Lasting Footprints

program members. These needed donors have funded the development of the Australian-premier Animal Care Centre, which is a huge step in the history of AWL and for the future of animal care in South Australia. With our supporters’ help, we can continue on this crucial journey and continue paving the way for animal care. As well as AWL’s tireless work to improve our facilities, our team have continued caring for the lost abandoned and surrendered animals in our community. Our adoption and rehoming programs are costly. It is only through our supporters’ kindness that we can give desperate animals the homes and lives that they deserve.

What is a critical message that you want people to know about this program? Our sincerest thanks go out to those who have joined AWL’s Lasting Footprints program and have named AWL in their Will. You have helped ensure the futures of thousands of animals who have reached their darkest days before being taken in by AWL. Thank you for your support, from me, the entire AWL team and the animals whose lives you’ve touched. If you haven’t already, please reach out to our team as we would appreciate the opportunity to get to know our wonderful supporters.

Port Adelaide of course! The exact address is: Shop S003, Quebec Street Mall30 – 34 Quebec Street, Port Adelaide SA.

Where is it?

Port Adelaide Pop Up Shop

ReTails

How long will it be there?

Not long! We’re exactly what we say we are – a pop-up shop, so pop in before we pop out!

What can I buy?

Anything and everything. Yes, even unicorns. Okay, no, not actual unicorns, but there are unique finds. From records and clothes to furniture and jewellery; we’ve got it all! In true thrift shop fashion (don’t mind the pun), we have fantastic products at affordable prices. Come down, take a look and bag a bargain!

Where does the money go?

Straight to animals in need – how cool is that? AWL care for more than 10,000 animals each year (that’s 25 animals coming into our centres each day), so we need our community’s help. AWL receives no government funding, and we rely entirely on donations from our community. What better way to donate to cats, dogs and rabbits in need than to go on a shopping spree?

Can I donate?

Ab-so-lutely. Please do. We’re looking for donations of all kinds. Monetary donations are needed most, but otherwise, donations of good quality and saleable items will always be put to use. We sell all sorts of things in our shops, so we need clothes, bric-a-brac, furniture, homewares, knick-knacks, books, records and anything else. If you would give it to a friend or sell it yourself, then we could use it.

Come say hello!Call 8348 1300
