Support Learning Opportunities 2020-2021
We are pleased to present the summer academy offerings for the 2020-2021 school year. In
response to the pandemic, all academies will be online this year. While browsing through the
booklet, please notice the arrangement of academies by areas of focus:
Curricular Support/Job Performance
Health & Wellness
Technology
The principle behind developing the “Support Learning Opportunities” booklet is to offer you
sessions that will best suit your needs and allow you to have a flexible schedule.
We continue to utilize Schoology for our online professional learning. Schoology provides an
easier-to-use interface and mirrors what some of you are already doing with students. While it is
“new” to some, we have created an easy to understand guide to help you sign up for, and get into,
your course of choice. You will be able to access to Schoology codes on the support staff website
by June 1, as well as a screen cast video showing you how to navigate the platform. Schoology is
integrated with our Google logins, so you will not need a special account to get access to these
courses. Schoology courses will open June 10 and close on August 14.
All support staff are highly encouraged to participate in any workshops offered by PaTTAN,
CAIU, or colleges and universities. Central Penn College is offering free classes this summer
beginning July 6. Please find more information by visiting https://www.centralpenn.edu/learn/
The session(s) you are planning to attend should come close to the length of your regular
workday. We continue to grant a half-hour leeway. For example, a 7.5-hour employee can take a
combination of sessions to equal 7 hours. If it is challenging for some of you to equal the
number of hours you need to fulfill summer professional development because of the timing
of the workshops, please choose two (2) or three (3) sessions that best fit your professional
needs rather than trying to be within the half-hour. These sessions should still come close to
the hours you need. You may personally choose to attend longer sessions but will not receive
monetary reimbursement for those, unless otherwise indicated. Additionally, credit will not be
extended for workshops previously attended (does not apply to Safe Crisis Management).
Please follow the information below for completing your selection(s):
Once you have determined which session(s) you would like to attend, complete your
registration via the Google Sheet.
Special Education paraprofessionals should take sessions that count towards their Special
Education 20 hour requirement from PDE. Each year, the District provides special
education paraprofessionals 20 hours of professional development related to their jobs
between July 1 and June 30 of the following year. If you need hours to count toward the Special Education 20 hour requirement for the 2019-2020 school year, please complete your
workshop online prior to June 30. If you need hours to count toward the Special Education
20 hour requirement for the 2020-2021 school year, please complete your workshops July 1
or later.
Hourly employees will complete a supplemental timesheet for the session he/she attends
and return it to their immediate supervisor for signature. Blank timesheets for summer
sessions will be shared with principals and building secretaries. After your supervisor
signs the timesheet, please send it to Lisa Hicks at ACE. Year-round employees will
simply note the time at an academy on their regular timesheet, as there is no need to
complete a supplemental timesheet. *If we are not back in the buildings once summer
workshops resume, then please keep record of your attendance so that we can verify this
later in the school year.
You must complete an online evaluation once you complete an activity. This allows you
the opportunity to provide feedback regarding workshops and online courses. A link to
the evaluation form will be provided on the support staff website for easy access.
Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Safe Crisis Management recertification is for those individuals who successfully completed an initial certification or recertification course within the past year. For the summer of 2020, the theory portion of the recertification will occur via the JKM (developer of the SCM curriculum) website. This course should take approximately three (3) hours to complete. You can exit the course at any point and resume where they were last in the course. The only exceptions include the section review quizzes and the course test – these must be completed in one sitting. The test is thirty (30) questions and you can take it as many times as necessary to achieve a minimum passing score of 85%. The physical skills portion of recertification will be held in July and August on the dates noted above. Each session will be three and a half (3.5) hours in length. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the following conditions will be in place:
Session size will be limited to allow participants to maintain appropriate distancing. Demonstration of Emergency Safety Physical Interventions (ESPI) will occur without going “hands-on” with other participants
Participants are encouraged to wear masks
Hand Sanitizer and clearing/disinfecting supplies will be provided
Successful completion of theory portion of curriculum is required prior to admission to the physical skills portion of recertification. At some point during the 2020-21 school year, when conditions are appropriate, it is the intent of the District SCM training team to bring summer recertification participants together for a more “hands-on” review of ESPI skills. It is important to note that any staff member who does not recertify during the summer of 2020 will need to repeat the initial certification course in the summer of 2021.

You will see how living in poverty affects students academically, socially, and behaviorally. Scientific research shows that factors surrounding living in poverty affect children starting at birth and can actually change the cognitive function and development of the brain. After identifying how students living in poverty are affected, we will work towards bettering our educational practices so we can optimize success for all students. Research-based SHARE (Support the Whole Child, Hard Data, Accountability, Relationship Building, Enrichment Mind Set) factors benefit all students, but especially those that are living in poverty. Finally, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your school and teaching practices to create an action plan on how you can better serve students coming from a situation of poverty.
Vivacious Vocabulary for English Learners (ELs) Audience: Grades K-12 ELD Aides, Paraprofessionals, and Reading Aides Authors: English Language Development Teachers, Jillian Ambrose, Rossmoyne Elementary School, Carrie
Biray, Washington Heights Elementary School, and Brandy Kanode, ACE Date: Open June 10th through August 14th Location: Schoology Delivery: Online Credit: 3.75 hours Activity #: CS 18 Are your English learners (ELs) using the same words repeatedly? Do they struggle to explain concepts in your classroom? Are their scores flatlining on state and local assessments? For English learners, vocabulary development is critical. Think of all the words that an English only student knows when they enter kindergarten. Of course, an English learner has a similar amount of words in their native language, but for them the challenge is two-fold. They need to build a foundation of English vocabulary and then close the gap between the amount they know and the amount of vocabulary necessary for success in the classroom. This course will emphasize the need for explicit vocabulary instruction for English learners
