A. Wildlife Support

1. protecting the brown bear

The Brown Bear Sanctuary is a 12.5 acre fenced area of natural beech forest situated at an alti-tude of 1,350m in Nymfaio, Florina, where 13 bears, previously held in captivity, are now host-ed. It is the first bear sanctuary in the world and it receives and informs 50,000 visitors and over 10,000 students annually. The animals in the Sanctuary need constant veterinary care by the qualified team of ARC-TUROS, while nutritional requirements are also substantial, considering that a bear consumes 25 kg of food daily.

Support the Brown Bear Sanctuary and >contribute to the significant operating costs, such as veterinary care and the upgrading and modernization of the existing facilities.

2. protecting the wolf

The wolf, a symbol of strength and freedom, lives only in mountainous and semi-mountain-ous areas in Greece; wolfs are endangered and need to be protected. ARCTUROS currently hosts 11 wolves in a model Sanctuary, within a natu-ral oak forest in Agrapidia, Florina. At the same time, it operates a Wolf Information Center to raise public awareness.

Support the Wolf Sanctuary and help cover >major expenses such as vaccines for the animals, veterinary monitoring and the up-grading and modernization of the existing facilities.

3. support the greek shepherd dog breeding program The Greek Shepherd Dog (Ellinikos Poimenikos) has been guarding livestock in mountainous areas of Greece for centuries and is therefore rightfully considered nowadays part of our nat-ural and cultural heritage. The species is valu-able because it is perfectly adapted to the nat-ural conditions of the mountains in Greece. ARCTUROS breeds Greek Shepherd Dogs in its modern facilities and provides annually free of charge approximately 50 puppies to farmers.

Support the Greek Shepherd Dog Breeding >Center of ARCTUROS and help create a cer-tification body for the Greek Shepherd Dog in Greece.

4. wildlife care & emergency response teamARCTUROS runs a model Veterinary and Reha-bilitation Station, which treats injured large carnivores previously held captive and in need of special veterinary care. In addition, ARCTUROS operates an Emergency Response Team that intervenes in wild fauna emergencies and accidents; this team provides also information to the residents of rural areas, in order to mitigate large carnivore – human conflicts and achieve a harmonious coexist-ence of people and wildlife.

Support the Veterinary and Rehabilitation >Station and the Emergency Response Team and help cover the costs of the veterinary care, the medical supplies, and the travel costs thus ensuring the effective operation of the Emergency Response Team.

1. brown bear rehabilitation programFor the first time in Greece, ARCTUROS has car-ried out the rehabilitation and release into the wild of two brown bear cubs, young John and Nikitas. These two orphaned cubs were treated in the Rescue and Rehabilitation Center of ARC-TUROS for 10 months and were provided with all the skills required to survive on their own in the wild – this innovative project that was car-ried out by the scientific team of ARCTUROS has earned the attention of the international scientific and conservation community.

Support the satellite tracking efforts of >these young animals after their hibernation period and into adulthood, as well as the development and integration of relevant scientific research on the results of this ground-breaking project.

2. monitoring plan for river ottersRiver otters are an endangered species in Greece. Their presence in their aquatic envi-ronments is an indicator of good water quality and proper functioning of these ecosystems. River otters are a species that has never been studied systematically before in Greece. The integrated research program includes monitor-ing of the population status in Northwestern Greece, tagging animals with satellite trans-mitters and monitoring of local populations and their habitats through automatic monitor-ing systems.

Support the innovative research program >for otters of ARCTUROS and contribute to the costs of scientific research and special-ized technical equipment.

3. wildlife monitoring plan

One of the essential and basic requirements for protecting wildlife is to improve our knowl-edge regarding the current population status of each respective species within a region. For ARCTUROS, the status of many important spe-cies of wildlife, many of which are included in the “Red List of Threatened Species” of Greece is a research priority. This research program is based on various scientific methodological ap-proaches, e.g.: use of genetic data, radio track-ing, “camera trapping” etc.

Support knowledge improvement regard- >ing the status of wildlife in Greece and pro-tect species such as the bear, the wolf, the chamois, the deer, the roe deer and many more. Help to cover the costs of scientific research, the acquisition of technical equip-ment and the travel costs of the Scientific Team of ARCTUROS.

B. Scientific Programs

1. “reforestation” program

ARCTUROS has carried out tree planting and wildlife habitat enhancement programs since 1997. So far approximately 200,000 trees have been planted throughout Greece, mainly in ar-eas where the natural regeneration of forests is not feasible. In collaboration with National Reforestation Authorities, ARCTUROS obtains the required licensing, while specialized teams monitor the health and ensure the survival of the trees for 3 years.

Support the restoration of the natural eco- >system by helping cover the costs of plant-ing and taking care of the trees for 3 years.

2. “clean forest” program

This program aims at the conservation and cleaning of peri-urban forests from inorganic matter (e.g. waste) and organic matter (e.g. dead trees and branches). The forests around the cit-ies will be revived, in order to become equally viable places for people and for the species of fauna and flora they host.

By covering the cleaning and restoration >costs of peri-urban forests, you help pro-tect the “natural lungs” of our cities.

3. green trail network

This program aims at preserving and promot-ing selected forest trails that have been aban-doned and at familiarizing people with nature while offering at the same time unique experi-ences in the wild and recreation. Actions of the program include remapping the “lost” trails, removing all waste and garbage from them, marking the routes and placing signposts for the general public.

Support the green trail network and help >preserve and promote the “lost” trails of the Greek mountains.

4. green bridge for wildlife

Wildlife crossings (i.e., viaducts, tunnels) in general have been essential in mitigating wild-life-vehicle collisions, while providing for the gene flow of wildlife populations along the Eg-natia Motorway. The intervention by ARCTUROS in the final mapping stage of the Egnatia Mo-torway is an environmental intervention of his-torical significance at the European level. Of all wildlife crossings, an important and unique technical project still remains however incom-plete: the green bridge. Green bridges are arti-ficial overpasses – wildlife bridges, where the cement construction is covered “in green” to enable animals to cross safely over a road.

Support the completion of the green bridge >at the Egnatia Motorway and thus, rescue and preserve Greek wildlife.

5. botanical garden

By constructing and promoting botanical gar-dens, small “green oases”, ARCTUROS promotes a new course of action in Greek peri-urban for-ests. With the assistance of qualified scientific personnel, ARCTUROS undertakes the planting of new plants, the care of the existing ones and the placement of information signposts. This action aims at promoting experiential awareness by providing information about lo-cal flora species. Botanical gardens can re-ceive organized school visits and familiarize future generations with nature.

Support the construction of botanical gar- >dens near cities and contribute to their pro-motion into environmental education and recreation areas.
