Electricity supply is one of the main

requirements of any data proces-

sing center. Electricity keeps the

system functioning and therefore

the supply must be secure and uninterrup-

ted. To prevent errors from occurring (essen-

tial in all data processing and storage acti-

vities) an emergency supply must also be

guaranteed to ensure that the system can

remain active in the event of grid failure. HI-

MOINSA, a company dedicated to power ge-

neration, specialising in the manufacture and

marketing of generation sets, designs elec-

tric generators that provide an uninterrupted

and emergency power supply to meet the

needs of the most demanding market seg-

ments, such as telecommunications and

data centers.

THE MOST IMPORTANT DATA CENTER

IN LATIN AMERICA

» OBJECTIVES

The Latin American Data Center market has developed significantly over the past two years. Although this market started to take off in 2008, the large projects in Latin America did not get underway until 2011, when Telconet built a large Data Center with capacity to ensure an interconnection within Ecuador, from Quito and Guayaquil to the outside world through the NAP of the Americas. The center has high connection speeds and offers coverage to multiple national and international telecommunications operators.

HIMOINSA’s mission in this key project was to supply the emergency power system to provide Ecuador with safe and reliable specialised data centers where companies can house their servers.

» THE CHALLENGE

The project stands out for the extremely high security measures taken to ensure a secure, uninterrupted power supply. Telconet Cloud Center falls into the TIER IV category (capacity for 400 racks), implying a margin of error which is almost zero. It is the first TIER IV classified data center in Latin America. HIMOINSA has provided a power system with HMW-810 T6 generation sets under 2N+1 configuration, involving the installation of 24 sound-proofed units (12 generator in each center) in a 20 inch container, with MTU engines for operation in parallel with load sharing.

» PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

Given the demand for high-availability sites for companies to house their servers, Telconet Cloud Center is considering building two data centers: Telconet Cloud Center I, in Guayaquil (TIER IV category and capacity for 400 racks) and Telconet Cloud Center II in Quito (TIER III

category and capacity for 360 racks).

To provide an optimum emergency power supply in these facilities, measuring 1000 m2 and 900 m2 respectively, emergency generator sets have had to be installed.

The first TIER IV certified data center in Latin America.

The installation of 24 sound-proofed HMW-810 T6 units enables parallel operation

and ensures high security, uninterrupted power supply levels to the most important data

center in Latin America.

» BENEFITSThrough this project, HIMOINSA’s generator sets ensure the continuity of supply, reducing the margin of error to zero in the event of a power failure in the main grid. The Telconet Data Center offers housing services (shared housing, hiring of closed cabinet space) and hosting services (virtual servers in a data center with advanced security, surveillance and fire-protection technology in place) to any company requiring them. These data centers, which comply with TIA 942-2 and Uptime Institute regulations, are undoubtedly the largest and most advanced in Ecuador.

“From the very beginning, we wanted to select the best offer on the market. We chose HIMOINSA from a group of different internationally-recognised generator set manufacturers because of its outstanding reputation, quality and reliability. With its cutting-edge technology and capacity for constant innovation, this power multinational has amply met all the technical expectations required for a project of this type. The technical support provided by its local supplier, FECORSA, also stands out”.

» OBJECTIVESHuatong plans to build data centers in the development areas of Hangzhou Zhuantang and Jinquiao in Shangai, Beijing, Guanzhou and Chongquing.

» PROJECT SPECIFICATIONSFor this project, in September 2012 HIMOINSA supplied two HTW- 2295 T5 generator sets with a Mitsubishi engine, HIMOINSA alternator and a CEA7 regulator. This installation that ensures an uninterrupted supply of energy in the event of grid failure to the Wasu data center in Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province, one of the most rapidly developing industrial and technological areas of Zhuantang. The energy multinational is complementing this project with the installation of a HTW – 2295 T5 generator set of the same characteristics as the previous sets and two HTW- 1745 T5 generator sets with a Mitsubishi engine, HIMOINSA alternator and Deep Sea regulator for the Watong data center in Jinqiao, one of the main areas of industrial development in Shanghai.

WHAT DOES HIMOINSA CONTRIBUTE TO DATA CENTER SECTOR?HIMOINSA is one of the leading companies in the electricity generation market. With seven production centers and ten subsidiaries, the multinational is present in more than 100 countries, offering energy solutions to all business areas. The company works in the rental market, industry, mining, airports, construction and telecommunications, supplying uninterrupted and emergency power. Demand for this type of supply is increasing mainly in the data center sector. “Since 2010, Data Center projects have been increasing on an annual basis, leading us to focus on this line of activity in order to meet the

demands of an extremely demanding market,” added Marco Perillo, Sales & Marketing Director Asia Pacific, who clearly believes that clients in this market require “powerful energy, a large production capacity and parallel units,” specficiations that HIMOINSA can guarantee in all its projects.

“Data centers are an attractive option for generator set suppliers and therefore competition is extremely high. In Eastern markets such as China, marketing is important to strengthen our brand”, stated Mr. Perillo. The multinational has positioned itself in China as a major player and the country is home to one of its largest production centers.

The Data Center market is growing in all corners of the globe (from east to west and north to south). Anywhere where there is development needs this kind of business. The Chinese company, Zhejiang Huatong, is a subsidiary of Wasu Media (listed company). Zhejiang Huatong Cloud Data Technology Co., Ltd. is responsible for developing a data center that will serve as the hub for online radio and television. The data center will be used by suppliers and triple play service radio and television operators in China. HIMOINSA was the company selected to provide an emergency power supply service for this project.
