NOTE: Do not pre-wash hexagon charms. Read all instructions before beginning project. Sew all pieces together with a 1/4" seam allowance with right sides together unless directed otherwise. Press seams with a dry iron on the cotton setting in the direction of arrows. 2. Make the Hexagon Charm Pocket: Arrange charms in 7 rows, of 3 and 4. Refer to package photo for color placement. Place lighter florals mixed in the top rows, the bottom rows are the grassy greens. Sew together by the hand or machine piecing method described in Hexagon Instructions below. 6. Foldandcreasecirclesinhalf.Pinwell,rightsidestogether,tobothendsofthebag,matchingcreasesandseams.Sewcirclestoendsofbag.Reinforcewithextrastitchingonthestrap.

7. Turnrightsideoutthroughopening.Handstitchopeningclosed.Pushliningdownintobag.Press.8. Usingthe2"x16"casing,foldalledges1/4"intothewrongsidesandpress.Topstitchshortendstofinish.Place

2"fromopening,pininplace.Topstitchlongedgesclosetoedge.Insertribbonthroughcasing.Finishendsornotchtopreventraveling.

3. Fromthe1¼ydofDaffadillyOrnamentalfabric,cutonestrap6"xwidthoffabric.Withwrongsidestogether,foldinhalflengthwise,press,thenopen.Next,foldeachsidetothepressedcentercreaseandpress.Foldinhalfalongthecentercreaseandpressagain.Topstitch1/8"fromtheedgeonbothlongsides.Cutthestrapintotwopieces–a16"lengthanda26"length.

4. FromtheremainingDaffadillyOrnamentalfabric,cuttwopieces19"x28",two6"diametercircles,one9"x16"pocketbackingandone2"x16"casing.Sewthetworectanglestogetheronthe19"side.Pressseamtooneside.Pinorbasteoneendofthelongerstrapinplace5"fromthecenterseam.

EducationalNote:Toaccuratelypiecehexagonsbymachine,thistechniquewillcreateaconsistent1/4"seamopeningateachcorner.Whyisthisimportant?Unlikesquaresthathavefourright(or90°)cornersandareeasilystitchedtogetherfromedgetoedge,hexagonshavesix60°cornersandcannotbesewntogetheredgetoedgetocreateaflatsurface.Anunstitchedlengthequaltotheseamallowanceused(1/4")mustbecreatedsothattheircornerscanbe“set-in”tomeetcorrectlywhenrowsarestitchedtogether.(ThisisalsocalledcreatingaY-seam,sincetheresultingseamresemblestheletterY.)A. Tobegin,placetwoneighboringhexagonsfromthelayoutrightsidestogetherwithcornersandedges

C. Continuethestepsofopeningoutpatchwork,selectingthenextseamtobesewn,foldingthepreviously

attachedhexagoninhalf,thenmatchingtheedgesofthenexthexagons,andstitchingfromonefoldedseamallowanceedgetothenextcorner.Whenentirerowisjoined,pressallseamsopen.

D. Repeatstepstosewadditionalrowsaccordingtodirections.

HEXAGON METHOD 2 – MACHINE PIECING FOR CONFIDENT PIECERS

Youarenotmarkingeachhexagon.Beforeyoustartsewing,besureyourmachineorfoothasaclearlymarked1/4"seamallowancemark.Match2hexagons,rightsidestogether.Startandstopsewing1/4"fromeachend.Cutthread.Donotpress–afinalpressingwillbedonewhenthesewingiscomplete.Whenjoiningrowsorfittingpiecesintoamedallion,keeptheopen,unsewnendsoutofthenextseam.Addeachhexagoninrowsorinamedalliononeatatime.Matchingrawedges,pin,keepingthe1/4"seamatstartingandstoppingpointsoutoftheway,sewinplace.Withexperience,youcanendaseamwiththe“needledown”position,pivot,matchandpinthenextseam,andcontinuesewing.

B. Placeseveralpinsperpendicular(atrightangles)tothemarkedseamline.Foraccuracy,checkthatthesepinspiercethroughmarkedlinesonbothlayers.Sewseamfromdottodot,backstitchingateachend,andremovingpinsasyoustitch.Trimthreadtailsandpressseamopen.

C. Repeatpreviousstepstocreatehexagonsrowsaslaidoutinproject.3. PinandSewRows

A. Tosewrowstogether,beginwiththefirsttwohexagonsononeendofRows1and2.SelectthefirstedgestobejoinedandfliptheRow2stripoverontopoftheRow1stripwithrightsidestogether.MatchtheedgesofthefirsthexagonofRow2withtheedgesofthefirsthexagonofRow1.Followingtheprevioussteps,matchdotsandrawedges.PinandsewthefirsthexagonsfromRows1and2together.Trimthreadsandremovefrommachine.

Markhexagonsusingatemplate,aspreparedinMethod1.Chooseastrong,shortneedle,suchasaBetween#9or#10.Useasinglestrandof100%cottonthread,notlongerthan15",toavoidwearandtangling.Pintwohexagonsrightsidestogethermatchingcornerdots.Knotendofthreadorstartwithatailor’stack,whichistakingtwoorthreesmallstitchesinasmallgroup.Sewarunningstitchfromdottodot.Endsewinglinewithaknotoranothertailor’stack.

Whenjoiningrowsorfittingpiecesintoamedallion,keeptheopen,unsewnendsfrombeingsewnintothenextseam.Manipulatethecornersandrawedgessotheymatch.Pinatthecornerdots,andsewfromdottodot.Tackorknottoendstitching.Clipthread.Checktherightsideofyourfabricstokeepupwiththedesign.

Withsomepractice,thenexthexagoncanbeaddedasfollows:aftertacking,donotclipthread–matchnextseamline,pindots,andsewfromdottodot.Anextrabackstitchortackcanbeaddedtothebeginningorend.
