FREEDOM Kitchens has developed an innovative online Kitchen Customiser, encouraging customers to unleash their creativity in the kitchen.

The new Kitchen Customiser, available on the Freedom Kitchen’s website, allows users to experiment with Freedom Kitchen’s actual colour palettes and textured finishes for both benchtops and cabinets to discover their desired colour combination.

According to Jenny O’Connell, Retail Design Manager, Freedom Kitchens one of the key advantages of the new Kitchen Customiser is that customers can trial various colour

THE Dulux EnviroSolutions range has taken out the People’s Choice Award at the 2014 Green Cities Weapons of Mass Creation competition – a showcase of the freshest sustainability ideas, techniques, products and designs for the built environment.

Dulux’s EnviroSolutions range was specifically designed to provide professional painters with more environmentally responsible alternatives to traditional paint clean up methods by minimising water usage, promoting clean up without turpentine, controlling paint waste disposal and assisting with paint can preparation for recycling.

THE Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) attends up to 40 trade events around the world annually, in established and new markets.

It promotes hardwood products ranging from logs and sawntimber to mouldings, veneer, plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), wooden and rattan furniture, builders’ carpentry and joinery items, as well as niche-market products like picture frames, pre-finished parquetry, wooden doors and laminated veneer lumber.

These hardwood products are now detailed in a new free publication to be distributed at all events attended by MTC.

“The Malaysian Hardwood Guide is an introduction to the exciting world of Malaysian timber-based products, whether made predominantly using Malaysian timbers, or in combination with other timber species from around the world,” said Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, Chairman of MTC.

The articles in this inaugural edition of the guide are meant to provide background information on many of these products, as well as feature a few exciting projects in which Malaysian timbers have been applied to excellent effect. The guide should assist traders, manufacturers, specifiers and developers to understand the choices of hardwood products available from Malaysia ●

MICROVELLUM Australia, now based out of Brisbane, has been moving forward with its rebuilding efforts for the past few months and recently made significant progress related to the sales, service and support of its software in Australia.

“We’re excited to be able to officially announce the fact that we’ve added to our team in Australia,” said David Fairbanks, Microvellum’s Director of Operations.

“Our goal is to make sure our customer-base here knows we are committed to improving customer service and expanding in Australia.

“These guys have vast experience both in the woodworking industry and Microvellum software and together we’re going to accomplish great things in 2014,” he continued.

One familiar addition to the Microvellum Team is Jamie Broadbent. Broadbent started

out as a shopfitter and went on to work in solid timber furniture where he gained experience working with solid timber window and doors, PVC windows and doors and carpentry.

“I have been working in and around the woodworking industry for around 18 years now. Throughout that time, I have gained a wide-range of experience from the different companies of which I’ve been a part,” said Broadbent.

In 2006, Broadbent made the decision to learn more about automated technologies within the woodworking industry and in the spring of 2006, he started his career with Microvellum as an entry level support technician for Microvellum’s now former reseller organisation, Complete Software Solutions. In a short time, Jamie was promoted to Tech Support Manager and soon after Library Product Development Manager. ●

FOR some years the traditional Australian furniture manufacturing model has been failing to the point that today, sadly, it is but a mere shadow of its former self.

According to Rex Carr, MD of Wentworth Furniture, unless there are some fundamental changes to our industry model there is a very real threat that it will compete with the car industry in the race to oblivion.

In recognising this depressing scenario, Wentworth has undertaken a number of initiatives including exports. The company is delighted to have attracted the attention of a prestigious Chinese retail bedding group. This group focuses solely on catering for the wealthy Chinese who actively seek high-end products from overseas.

Wentworth has shipped a trial container which has been very well received and bodes well for the future.

As Rex Carr has been heard to comment on various occasions: ”China is both the greatest risk to our industry and our greatest opportunity”.●

THE ATO is inviting Australia’s small business owners to apply to join its new small business consultation panel to help cut red tape and boost the agency’s small business expertise.

The consultation panel will bring together small business operators to help the ATO to better understand the way small businesses interact with the organisation and other government agencies.

Business operators joining the panel may be contracted on a short-term, as-needs basis to participate in consultation activities including workshops and user testing to provide feedback from a small business perspective. Successful applicants will be paid for their services.

THE HIA-GWA Kitchens and Bathrooms Report for 2013/14 has been released.

This report follows an extended period of difficult conditions for the kitchen and bathroom industry. Over the past year, the situation has improved due to the reduction of interest rates to all-time lows, the gradual weakening of the dollar and improving international environment.

New dwelling commencements increased by almost 10% during 2013, with NSW leading the charge. In contrast, the renovations side of the market has been particularly hurt by poor household sentiment over recent years as well as negligible dwelling price growth. More recent firmer price developments will allow greater scope for renovations lending, with improving sentiment towards the housing market also likely to support higher levels of activity in this area.

Key findings in the report include:• In 2012/13 the total number

of kitchen installations in new homes increased by 11.7%, out-performing our forecast this time last year of a rise of 2.6%. The number of installations is forecast to increase by 2.8% in 2013/14 to a level of 166,500. A flat year is forecast for 2014/15, followed by modest growth of 1.0% in 2015/16 which would take the total number of new kitchen installations to 168,300.

• The total number of bathroom installations in new homes is forecast to rise by 2.8% from 311,000 in 2012/13 to 319,600 in 2013/14. We are forecasting a flat year in 2014/15, followed by a modest rise of 1.0% in 2015/16 taking the total number of new bathroom installations to 323,100.

• Based in notional demand HIA estimates that there is the potential for around 146,500 kitchen renovations and around 220,300 bathroom renovations in 2013/14. ●

LAMINEX Australia is offering a $10,000 business grant as part of its new online award program, Project of the Year, which launched on 1 March.

Open to all Australian fabrication, design and specification businesses, they are encouraged to submit projects that have used Formica, Laminex or essastone products in residential or commercial projects.

Laminex Australia General Manager Marketing, George Bej said Project of the Year aims to celebrate the diversity of the Laminex Australia portfolio, and its clever and inspirational applications.

“Our products are used everywhere. In our hospitals and schools, hotels and offices, across all styles of retail shop fitting and of course in the homes that we build and renovate,” Bej said.

“We’re excited to see where and how professionals use our products to bring to life commercial and residential spaces.”

Project of the Year closes 27 November and is housed on Laminex Australia’s Facebook page. Each month, the public will vote to determine a Project of the Month, which will be awarded a $500 eftpos card.

All eligible entries received from 1 March to 20 November will be considered for the Project of the Year title, which will be determined by a panel of industry judges, led by Laminex Australia Group Design Director, Neil Sookee.

The Project of the Year will be announced in December, with the business responsible for the winning entry to receive a $10,000 business grant.

30 Years

There are three "M"s that every manufacturer needs to deal with on a daily basis. These are Machinery (equipment), Materials (consumables) and Manpower (labour).

In a recent issue I wrote about machinery when I took a broad look at CNC over the last 30 years. This issue I'm going to tackle training (manpower). I know a little bit about this subject because I've been directly involved in it since 1980, just a little longer than Supplier has been involved in your industry.

Training is such an important part of manufacturing: if you don't have the skills, you don't have the business. I can report on 30 years of change, all of it interesting, but there are still a few issues to deal with. Vocational education in Australia is not travelling all that well at the moment.

The Apprenticeship Act was passed in Victoria in 1928 so we've been playing around with the system for 80 years now. Back then, the training was done in a cohort-based system where lessons were delivered to the whole class at the same time. It's what happens in a primary or secondary school. It worked well for TAFE because it was economical to run and teachers were very comfortable with it.

I completed my apprenticeship in 1973 and, in those days, you

passed the course by sitting an exam at the end of three years. Some argue this exam was really only a way of recording that you actually attended the course and gave no real indication of how competent you were to do the job.

Advance to 1984 and your apprentice studied modules. A module was a unit of work and was accompanied by a module book students worked through. These were assessed throughout the course, not at the end.

Training was based on a system used in the United Kingdom. As teachers, we joked that a politician must have been on an overseas trip recently, hence the change. It seemed that

Australia adopted anything that was tried in the United Kingdom, regardless of how successful it was. In fact, the British system still influences our vocational education policies today.

Personally, I didn't mind the change: it set out what was to be learned in one unit of work. For example, there was a module on wood and how it grows, is dried and sawn. It was mostly theory but it helped you select, machine and assemble wooden products to a professional standard. It's the "underpinning knowledge" you need to understand how the wood will behave after it's been sold. It goes towards making a professional cabinet maker.

Today, a student learns

about wood if the teacher finds the time or inclination to teach it. While the training package your student enrols in talks about the underpinning knowledge required to do a job, it's usually up to the teacher how much of this underpinning knowledge is taught. This means it is taught differently throughout the TAFE system. There isn't an official document that says specifically what should be taught.

When a TAFE college teaches CNC machining, it's done on the machine they have in the workshop. The competency is "interpreted" to suit what they have. Add to this, industry pressure to teach only what the company needs and it's clear that the

"apprenticeship" as we knew it is being "dumbed" down.

Looking back at the 1980s module system after 30 years, I can appreciate that subjects were taught in isolation and that wasn't good. Today, training is designed to be delivered "holistically" – that is to say, as a whole, or together. It's a competency based system where the student progresses at their own pace until they're deemed competent. If it's done properly, your apprentice learns all he/she needs to know about wood while they work with it to produce a variety of industry specific items. But I wonder if it's being done properly?

There is no doubt that recent Australia-wide TAFE cuts have weeded out some of the more (shall we say) inept teachers amongst the many good teachers who also lost their jobs, but the cuts also mean much larger classes, reduced face to face time, materials and resources. They've also made it much easier for private providers to step in, and some of these

have proved to be very dodgy indeed.

Competency based assessment (CBA) was first introduced in West Australia in 1986. Discussion papers on training based on how competent a person was started to appear in 1986 and, in 1989, VET ministers agreed that competency based training (CBT) should be part of the vocational education training reform.

Based on the British model with an (unfortunate) narrow functional definition of competence described as "the ability to perform satisfactorily in a range of occupational tasks" this system was somewhat at odds with European training of the time where more broad-based training was delivered.

Looking at our system from an international perspective, James P** (2002) states that: "Australian competency based training enhances the development of procedural, technical knowers and adaptable workers, instead of reflective problem solvers and innovators".

Our system is seen as a monkey-see, monkey-do approach, where we should be teaching people to think about what they are doing. If a person has a broader knowledge and skills base, similar to what is practised in Germany, they can contribute to the success of your company and not just "do the work." The worker becomes more of a true "craftsman" and his/her social standing and work satisfaction is improved.

Fast forward to 1997 when the first training package concepts were being tossed around. A training package is a set of nationally endorsed standards, qualifications and

guidelines used to recognise and assess the skills and knowledge people need to perform effectively in the workplace.

This is around the time that ITABs were formed. An ITAB is an Industry Training Advisory Board where representatives from industry, Government and unions come together to advise on training issues within their own sector. It's widely accepted that there was a lot of tension between the ITABs and TAFE, who felt excluded from the process. Notwithstanding this, I was part of a group of three TAFE teachers who, in 2002, worked with the Australian Light Manufacturing Industry

Training Advisory Board (ALMitab) to ensure the new package reflected industry requirements and could be taught effectively in TAFE.

Back then the various industry groups were in agreement with the content and structure of the new furniture training package to varying degrees. I recall that West Australia wanted more of a craft emphasis, while those in Queensland were in favour of more manufactured board training. Victoria seemed to support the traditional wood furniture sector.

Eventually however, an agreement was reached. Ten years later things are not so good. Not all associations agree on what are the skills required by a cabinet maker (for example). If industry

only wants training to cater for their own industry sector, we're going to end up with "specialists" who only understand part of a process and we can kiss goodbye to the master craftsman, employable by all industry sectors.

That brings me to the present day and I will pose some questions.

Why is it that for many years the Furnishing Industry Association ran separate state associations? Only recently has Victoria and Tasmania joined with West Australia. The other "half" of the furniture industry representation is the NSW, Queensland and South Australian group.

Why is it that there now exists a new Furniture Industry Training Advisory Group (FITAG) that does

not represent all the industry sectors? There is representation from glass and glazing, specialised textiles, kitchen and bathroom design, architectural glass and picture framing, but not furniture or kitchen and bathroom manufacture or installation, or the unions?

And lastly, why is it that TAFE works so poorly with industry?

I recently sat down with Gary Dunshea, Workplace Development Co-ordinator for Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) where both of us bemoaned the lack of co-operation between almost all parties involved in supposedly working toward a better training system.

MSA wanted a review of wood machining two years ago but have been held up by industry associations. The new qualification was released in December. Just recently Balga TAFE in West Australia has announced the shutdown of Upholstery, soft furnishings, wood machining and flooring training because they were "not financially viable" and this without any consultation with industry.

Late 2012, Holmesglen TAFE in Victoria sacked their furniture finishing teachers in spite of the fact this was the last TAFE in the state providing this training – and again, no industry consultation. The teachers at Lidcombe TAFE in Sydney have been told to "get the numbers or jobs (and courses?) will be at risk." And in the Northern Territory, only traditional furniture courses can be offered because of a lack of funds.

Trade training in Victoria in the cabinet making trade commenced at Collingwood Technical school in 1922.

It's now 2014 and manufacturing in Australia is possibly in its worst state ever, not counting the great depression of the 1930s.

Carolynne Bourne, former CEO of International Specialised Skills Institute said: "The trades are the backbone of our Nation" (Herald Sun, March 11, 2003). Now is not the time to mess around with our skills base. Competency based training is practised world-wide so we know there is nothing wrong with it. It is a fact that in Germany, two-thirds of all young people start an apprenticeship under the same system yet, here in Australia, especially in wood manufacturing trades, the numbers are critical.

The problem here is that industry doesn't talk to TAFE; TAFE doesn't talk to industry or the associations; the associations don't talk to each other and the Government is slashing training funds. All the while, people are fighting each other for their place on top of the woodpile.

People need to pull their heads in and think about the underlying skills Australia needs to be competitive. The question could be asked: "Does the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) system produce a real tradesman anymore?"

If industry, the associations and TAFE can't get together to agree, the answer is probably no.

NSW Joinery was established in October 1977 by it's present owner and Managing Directer Alexander (Karl) Sholkie, who still spends around 70% of his working day on the factory floor supervising all aspects of production and maintaining quality control.

With over 36 years of experience as a qualified cabinet-maker/joiner and holding a gold building license, he has a wealth of experience in detail joinery, boat and coach building, restoration work, and building work.

The first factory was in Bankstown, NSW,

where this very small sized company grew to a medium sized company, employing approximately 30 people at it's peak. The main work at this time was bullet-proofing and fitting out of major Australian banks, such as Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and National Australia Bank.

In July 1983, the company purchased and moved into its present location in Sefton.

“Having larger premises, we included in our works major fitouts of offices, government departments, and various local councils, such as Botany, Strathfield and Marrickville,” explained

Karl. “The work included large counters, demountable partitions, gyprock partitions and high class office furniture including the fit-out of the Mayor's private chambers.

“Due to the work load, in July 1988 we were forced to purchase the adjoining factory, doubling our factory size. This enabled us to include detailed furniture and restoration work to our ever increasing variety of work.”

Just a few of the projects completed by the company to date include the restoration of the Haymarket Library for Sydney Council,

various joinery items for Sydney Town Hall, including traditional office furniture for the Mayor of Sydney's office. Other projects nclude various joinery items for the Sydney Botanical Gardens, restoration of bank counters, and joinery items for the Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Pitt St and Martin Place, Sydney.

World’s fastest growing areaThe Asia Pacific market for office furniture in ten countries – Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam (excluding India and China) was estimated by CSILl to be worth US$ 7 billion in 2013.

Over the last decade, the area grew by 4% on average. Each year, according to preliminary

estimates, office furniture consumption increased by 2% in 2013 (in real terms). Around 11% of the market is currently satisfied by imported office furniture (US$ 806 million), recording an average annual growth of +10% since 2003.

Office furniture production is mainly destined for the local market, while just 8% is exported outside the region. Malaysia is the leading exporter of the area, with a share of 47% of total office

furniture export. Japan and Australia are the leading importers, with 37% and 23% of total office furniture import in Asia Pacific. The leading supplier of office furniture for all these countries is China, providing about 60% of total imports.

Japan, the largest marketplaceAfter the earthquake in 2011, Japan’S economy has been experiencing a recovery. In 2012 and 2013 GDP grew

by 2% in real terms and it is expected to increase by 1.2% in 2014.

Japanese imports of office furniture are worth about US$ 300 million and 83% of total imports are office seating. China and Taiwan are top two suppliers: together they provid 84% of total Japanese imports.

Major customers for office furniture in Japan are governmental agencies, industrial firms and trade organisations. The traditional

distribution chain ‘producer-wholesaler-retailer’ is increasingly losing ground, due to the existence of important commercial ties among smaller local producers (oem) and large assemblers/distributors known as brand name makers (Okamura, Kokuyo, Itoki, etc). These companies are present throughout the country with an impressive distribution network. Foreign brands in Japan are mainly distributed through a large network of local corporations. Kokuyo controls Wilkhahn Japan, Okamura is importer of Wiesner Hager, Fora Form and Wogg (just to mention a few), Kurogane Kosakusho has commercial agreement with Steelcase and Dauphin.

Australia to develop offices and hotelsAustralia’s 22 million inhabitants are mainly

concentrated in metropolitan areas like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. According to the Australian Bureau Of Statistics, in the first ten months of 2013 the value of total non-residential building approved (94% coming from the private sector) rose by 10% on the previous year.

170,500 sqm OF office space is under construction in Melbourne, expected to be completed by 2015. 68% is pre- committed. In Brisbane there are three large office buildings under construction (totalling 188,000 sqm), reportedly to be completed not earlier than 2016. With its estimated stock of 136,000 hotel rooms, Australia is expected to increase its pipeline both in the tourist and business hotel premises.

Australian imports of office furniture amounted to UA$ 185 million in 2012 (+5% on the previous year), coming

mainly from the Asia and Pacific area (84% of total imports). Australia’s major trading partner is China, accounting for 55% of total imports. Taiwan, New Zealand, United States and Malaysia followed.

Office furniture distribution in Australia is partially in the hand of the largest local manufacturers, who also act as major importers of international brands.

The role of local distributors, mainly organised as interior design studios, is also relevant. Schiavello, widely known in Australia as a leading supplier, is the leading local company with over 1,000 employees, 10 showrooms and six manufacturing plants in operation.

Singapore, the regional hubThe office furniture market in Singapore is highly

penetrated by imported products from Malaysia and China. Some of the largest companies with headquarters in Singapore operate production facilities in Malaysia, China and Indonesia. This is particularly true for the office seating segment.

Singapore is a main hub, not only for the local market but also for the entire Asia Pacific region. Some relevant architectural and interior design companies are located there and they specify products for major project all over the Pacific area. Office furniture distribution in Singapore mainly passes through space-planning companies and contractors, and major office furniture manufacturers have their own showrooms over there.

Malaysia, a leading exporterOver 60% of Malaysian office furniture production is destined for foreign markets. Exports totalled about US$ 270 million, increasing +12% yearly on average since 2003. Main countries of destination are India (15%), Singapore (13%), US (9%) and the UAE (8%).

Merryfair is the leading office chair manufacturer both countrywide and in the whole region. The Canadian Teknion pioneered as foreign investor in the country taking over in 1999 a leading Malaysian manufacturer of filing, storage and seatings with 20,000 sqm in Klang. In 2001 a similar strategy was adopted by Steelcase, which established a joint venture with a relevant local producer.●

There are plenty of good things happening at Biesse. There are so many, in fact, that the new CEO, Luke Tenaglia, couldn’t wait until AWISA later this year. He had to get the news out now. After all, Biesse’s new offerings are designed to make it more cost-effective to ramp up production for even the smallest manufacturers. And so, the BIESSEiNSIDE show, from 19 to 21 March, brought together some of the most experienced technical experts from as far away as the USA and Italy to team with those from Australia in presenting the very latest in manufacturing technology. The winners were the hundreds of manufacturers from Australia and New Zealand who went along to see how Biesse could help their companies grow.

“It was the world’s first glimpse of Biesse’s fastest nesting system – the Rover BG FT. This was a must-see; the ‘B’ is back!”

The aim of the Rover BG is to squeeze every second from your machine cycle. This machine is available in a flat or pod and rail table, with three, four or five axes and up to 116 tools with up to three tool changers including a multi-level system.

Digital technology means greater accuracy. Higher acceleration means your cutting tools reach their optimum cutting speeds faster and leads to improvements in tool life and significantly better

cycle time. Biesse uses lean manufacturing technologies in the construction of the machines. These manufacturing improvements mean that CNC is now more reliable and affordable than ever before with cheaper machines that are made to Biesse’s highest standards. The Rover B is the flagship of the range and offers exciting possibilities for the Australian manufacturer.

In the past the price point of flat-bed CNC machinery was well beyond the hundred thousand dollar mark. Biesse can now offer complete production systems for less than this.

On offer at the show was a Klever CNC flat-bed router, Active 400 sliding table panel saw and Spark 4.3 edgebander.

This is the ideal “next-step” technology for those manufacturers wishing to take their traditional production to the next level. And don’t think it’s a cheap entry either. The Klever CNC router eats into the flat-bed CNC market with a machine that’s not designed around price. This machine has all the integrity and quality of Biesse’s high-level equipment because that’s where the design came from. The Klever is available with an optional express package with a higher feed speed.

Other CNC machines on display at BIESSEiNSIDE, which are suitable for your next step were the Skill 12 24 G FT, the Skipper 130 and Skipper V31.

The Skill is a nesting solution that can be ordered as a single machine or with automatic in-feed and out-feed tables and label printing. The Skill G FT with feed tables gives the machine a similar output to larger stand-alone machines because the production never stops for manual handling of the sheets and finished parts. The Skipper 130 is a horizontal CNC/

drilling machine, capable of drilling single panels (not nested) on six sides or two panels on five sides of each panel. The Skipper 130 can also be used for dowel-style cabinet construction where location dowels are used for a more exacting product.

The Skipper 130 is ideal for high volume flexible drilling production for cabinet makers, shop fitters and commercial furniture manufacturers. The vertical Skipper V31 is for working single panels on five sides inclusive of sawing and routing. No set-up of panel position is required because a laser detects the panel dimensions.

Both Skipper machines can be used with a panel or beam saw or for horizontal drilling of parts from a nesting machine and offer surprisingly fast production times, especially when stack-cutting with a beam-saw.

EdgingOne of the most talked about technologies for flat panel manufacturers is edge finishing. Recent hype about laser applied edging has waned due to the extremely high cost, high maintenance required and the explicit dangers of a laser activated system. 30

A few years ago a small European company developed the technology to “soften” the inner active (functional) layer of laser edge tape at a fraction of the cost using high heat. Biesse, with previous expertise in this field using other materials, was able to take this technology to the next step. This includes extremely fast heat up times (less than two minutes) using a more powerful temperature generator and a reduced panel gap resulting in a higher panel feed-rate. What you get is an invisible join that is identical to the laser edge quality but at a fraction of the cost.

While the laser system doubles the cost of the edgebanding machine making it prohibitively expensive to purchase and operate, other troubling issues include the colour of the edging influencing the laser process and safety. The new Biesse “AirForce” system uses compressed hot air at 500º Celsius to produce a join that is impervious to water and humidity with favourable maintenance and operating costs. It’s so good that the AirForce system won the AWFS manufacturing innovation award in Las Vegas (2013) and, more recently, in Valencia. The result is more panels per hour

and a perfect join with no glue line. The technology sells itself.

At BIESSEiNSIDE, the new technology was shown on the BIESSEEDGE Roxyl 5.5 edgebanding machine. The machine is capable of applying the new “laser” edging as well as current EVA glue technology so, depending on your customer’s requirements, you can provide a complete edging solution. Biesse’s success leads to your success.

SurfacesHigh-gloss painted surfaces are a delicate product and need a delicate operation to produce them. BIESSEiNSIDE was the exclusive Australian launch of the newest and latest sanding technology using a high performance electronic pad that actually reduces by two-thirds the surface pressure required to sand painted surfaces.

This results in longer belt life, lower power consumption and a higher quality surface because there is less heat generated during the sanding process. The only thing rugged about the Viet Opera 7 is its monolithic construction that provides a stable platform for flawless sanding.

Viet has a long history and tradition in sanding being the pioneers in the industry, leading the way since 1967 with patents such as the combination units and the superfinishing pad that, today, are universal industry standards.

Biesse acquired Viet in 2011 and brought its own and Viet’s sanding experts together to create a system that is nothing short of revolutionary. Continuing with the great success of Biesse, this technology won another award for product innovation: the 2011 Sequoia Award that now sits in Biesse’s award cabinet.

Stone and glass The Master 33 CT is the premium bench-top production machine that allows manufacturers to expand into stone bench-top processing. Most people think it’s not only difficult but expensive and specialised: but it’s easier than you think.

Luke said: “I was very proud that Intermac held the first glass processing equipment exhibition in Australia.

“We highlighted the Master series range of CNC machining centres for glass and stone bench-top processing, and the Genius 37 cutting line for frameless glass production.

“It opened everyone’s eyes to just how affordable and simple to use these systems are and demonstrated just how easy it is to diversify into stone bench-top production. Processing solid surfaces is now seriously worth thinking about.”

A typical Biesse customer already has the skills and knowledge for the fabrication and installation of a bench-top. The Master 33 CT is the most economical solution that makes it possible to produce two kitchens in a seven-hour shift with only one operator. Everyone knows it’s cheaper to operate your own production but the real benefit is that you control lead-times and maximise your returns.

Biesse says the Master 43 CNC glass machining centre is still the number one glass processing machine in the world with a high speed tooling set for mid to high-level glass companies. Luke Tenaglia is the “new” CEO for Biesse Australia and New Zealand. Maybe “new” is not the right word because Luke has been with Biesse since 1994. Back then John Cover and Jake Martin supplied the Biesse brand through the Allwood Company. Allwood became Biesse Australia in 2001 and is one of the industry’s leading machinery suppliers.

Fast forward to 2014 and Luke brings his infectious brand of enthusiasm to the top job to continue Biesse’s success.

Luke plans further inroads into the woodworking, stone and glass industries and to provide the backup and high-level of service demanded by manufacturers. He said: “Buying a machine is only the first step. The ownership

of the machine in terms of performance and service are equally important issues for the user”.

Biesse is in Luke Tenaglia’s DNA. He lives and breathes Biesse and says he “could not represent any other supplier”. As Financial Controller for many years, Luke understands the business but, more importantly, he understands what the customer wants and needs.

In just over a year as CEO, Luke has changed the structure of Biesse Australia and New Zealand so that each of the three technology streams of CNC, edging and Intermac (stone and glass) is managed by a Technical Service Manager, who is a recognised expert in the field. This means a person is in place to ensure your equipment is supported and you get the very best performance from your investment.

Luke was there 20 years ago when John Cover made technical service a big ticket issue. Luke believes that in 2014 service is more important than ever before. So much so, that he’s actually increased Biesse’s service personnel at a time when other suppliers are reducing staff in this area.

Luke has set a high service benchmark and with the extra technical service staff, Biesse aims to achieve a repeatability of service second-to-none. He intends to achieve the very best

technical support with people who specialise in specific areas of technology.

With almost five million dollars’ worth of spare parts to call on, this puts Biesse at the premium end of machine service.

We have all experienced the rationalisation in manufacturing in this part of the world. Luke, as a result, employs a Dual-Band strategy, which aims to continue Biesse’s excellent record with entry level equipment whilst keeping a commitment to top end industrial solutions. After all, the technical developments at the top end filter down through all levels.

Luke believes in the industry and is optimistic about the future of manufacturing. He believes an equipment supplier must work closely with the manufacturer and understand the company’s processes.

“Selling a machine is not enough: Biesse sells a solution to a complete manufacturing situation. That way, we can supply the very best manufacturing capability for your company,” Luke said.

Luke is sincere when he says: “The success of the manufacturer goes hand in hand with the success of Biesse”.

Touchstone Joinery is a growing joinery business located in Queanbeyan, on the border with the ACT, and servicing Canberra and the surrounding regional area. Touchstone designs, manufactures and installs custom joinery and kitchens and has been operating for the last 10 years under the directorship of Anthony Le Lievre, a cabinet maker with close to 30 years’ experience.

During the last 12 months Touchstone has seen an increase in turnover of around 60% despite slower economic times. Looking at the evolution of the business, there are some key reasons for the increase.

A couple of years ago Anthony looked at the business and decided that it had been stagnant for some time and needed a new direction. He decided to focus on three distinct areas: staff and culture, technology, and quality management systems.

As with many businesses, Touchstone experienced

degrees of frustration with dealing with staff and, particularly, Gen Y staff. The change came when Touchstone decided to embrace the changing workforce and examine the benefits the younger members of the team could bring to the business.

It was recognised that the younger staff were motivated and enthusiastic to embrace new technology. As a result, the business invested in a state-of-the-art point-to-point nesting machine and software to increase productivity in the factory. This equipment is largely operated by the younger members of staff, who seem to adapt quickly to the technology.

Originally, it was imagined that increased productivity would lead to a reduction in the workforce. However, Touchstone has ended up travelling in the opposite direction and has increased staff in both the front end and

installation teams to keep up with the factory.

One of the additions to the staff was a young female apprentice, Taylor. Whilst there was some apprehension to begin with regarding her physical size and strength, Touchstone soon discovered that having a female in the production team changed the culture and dynamic within the organisation in a very positive way.

Taylor has heartily taken on the challenge of working with the nesting machine and has demonstrated that the role of a cabinet maker has changed as a result of technology, making cabinet making an option for a wider range of individuals.

The business has used management systems to create a more inclusive workplace where individuals are encouraged to share in the decision making

processes. Many systems were created to ensure better quality management and customer satisfaction. Regular team meetings have been introduced to ensure there are strong lines of communication between the three areas of the business and within each team. Overall, the organisation has improved administration dramatically, which has enabled the growth to occur in a controlled and well executed way.

Viewing the business today, it looks nothing like the start-up company of a decade ago.

With a growing team, Touchstone is increasing its turnover and capabilities and the staff are along on the journey. No longer is the business heavily reliant on its director for all aspects of day-to-day running. Instead, the business relies on teams of individuals working together to create outstanding products and provide clients with exceptional service.

The evolution is not complete and the challenges are not over but, for Anthony and the team, that’s part of what makes Touchstone Joinery special – its willingness and ability to adapt to the ever changing business landscape, learning and growing along the way. ●

Vertical panel saw specialists Sagetech and Zapkut have merged under the Sagetech name, making their Zapkut and Koolkut saw families the widest single range of economically priced vertical panel saw solutions.

Established in 2002, Sagetech focused on intermediate to heavy industrial users with its Koolkut family, while Zapkut, launched in 2006, concentrated on light to intermediate users and those requiring portable cutting solutions. Both companies' saws have proved popular with signmakers, cabinetmakers, timber and plastics traders and various other types of business.

Keith Bunker, Managing Director of the merged company, Sagetech Limited, explained the merger: "Different businesses and users have differing needs, in the area of sheet cutting as in other areas. A key challenge faced by anyone considering buying a vertical panel saw has always been identifying the right saw for the needs of the business."

Broadening its horizons

The process started with relocation and installation of new offices for I & J Machinery Sales on its premises, including a refurbished board room for meetings with customers and

an overhead crane for easier handling of machines.

The other change is to the expansion of its staff with Tim Matthews joining the I & J Machinery team after 10 years at Biesse.

FOLLOWING a preview at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, Caesarstone will present a further exploration of Islands with an interactive installation focusing on food and dining within the domestic environment at Milan 2014.
