SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL DR2015170
Figure S1. Palaeogeographic reconstruction of west-central North America at the time of the K-
Pg boundary event. Areas of active sediment accumulation (basins) were bounded by positive
tectonic features extant at the time of the K-Pg boundary event: the Sevier deformation front to
the west, Laramide uplifts Montana southwards, and the flexural forebulge to the east
(references for the ages of major tectonic structures are superscripted following their
abbreviated names). Catuneanu and Sweet’s (1999) forebulge in Saskatchewan/Manitoba is
projected southward into North Dakota based on evidence for eastward thinning of the Upper
Maastrichtian Hell Creek Formation towards central North Dakota (Johnson et al., 2002) and
chron 29r containing the K-Pg boundary (Lerbekmo and Coulter, 1984; Hicks et al. 2002; Lund
et al. 2002), and the absence of evidence for complete K-Pg boundaries towards that same
direction (Murphy et al., 1995). South of this, where Maastrichtian/Danian rocks are absent, the
position of the forebulge is conjecture. Active sediment accumulation between positive tectonic
features is confirmed locally by the preservation of either an Ir anomaly, shocked minerals a
readily identifiable boundary claystone layer or a fern-spike (references to work describing
localities which fulfil this criteria are superscripted following their abbreviated names). Areas of
active sediment accumulation at the time of the K-Pg boundary in terrestrial rocks of North
America are suggested more generally by the occurrence of magnetostratigraphic subchron
C29r (D’Hont et al., 1996; Gradstein et al., 2012) and/or the occurrence of typical palynomorph
taxa of the latest Maastrichtian followed by those of the earliest Danian (e.g. reduction on
Triprojectoate group diversity followed by diversification of the Juglandacaea family;
Leffingwell, 1970; Tschudy and Tschudy, 1986; Sweet and Braman, 2001), indicating no major
or regional unconformity occurs at this time (references for the ages of the lithostratigraphic
unit or units which thus bracket the K-Pg boundary event are superscripted following their
abbreviated names). Areas of interpreted sediment accumulation on the map have been
populated with palaeoenvironmental interpretations of sedimentary facies adjacently
underlying the K-Pg boundary interval (reference for palaeoenvironmental interpretations of
facies are subscripted after the abbreviated name of the lithostratigraphic units) and
palaeoflow data from the upper Maastrichtian and lower Danian (reference to palaeoflow
measurement next to arrow).
Table S1. Results of the petrological analyses of 184 coal seam samples and δ13C analyses
carried out on 319 subsamples collected from eight localities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. See
Figure 1 and Table 2 for sampling location data.
Table S2. Correlation matrix of standard Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient for
individual macerals and maceral groups for all 184 petrological analyses, and δ13C
measurements of 319 subsamples. Samples for which no petrological results were determined
are omitted.
