Nutrition Specialist Job Description

Definition This is a professional support position responsible for nutrition compliance and promotion of the school meals programs. An employee in this classification is responsible for ensuring all school nutrition programs are compliant with federal requirements, providing nutrition education and training, and planning and implementing a communications plan to expand participation in school meal programs. Supervision Work is performed under the general supervision of the operations manager, school nutrition. Assignments are given verbally or in writing and performed independently in accordance with established policies and procedures. Additional guidance is provided through United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Virginia Department of Education School Nutrition Programs, local and state health departments, Norfolk Public Schools, federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines. No direct supervision is exercised over other employees; however, the employee is responsible for training and inspecting the work of the school nutrition managers, school nutrition assistants and warehouse staff in the accomplishments of program objectives. Distinguishing Characteristics This is professional work planning multiple cycle menus which include diet modifications to accommodate special needs, marketing school nutrition to the school community, and providing training and education to staff, students and the community regarding the program, nutrition and wellness. Essential Functions of the Class (May not include all duties performed)

Menu Planning & Analysis: o Plans menus for all federal school nutrition programs in accordance with federal requirements. o Analyzes menus and maintains records to ensure compliance with all federal regulations. o Develops and tests standardized recipes collaboratively with nutrition center supervisor, incorporating

HAACP procedures where appropriate. o Creates and regularly updates manager’s Quality Instructional Guide. o Identifies allergens in products and recipes. o Processes required forms for students with food allergies and communicates information to school

nutrition managers. o Conducts and analyzes surveys regarding stakeholder satisfaction with school meals and school nutrition

for menus and marketing trends. o Create and distribute production records for National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast

program.

Marketing & Communications: o Maintains the school nutrition website and other social media (Twitter and Instagram) accounts to

ensure accurate and timely information. o Develops objectives, strategies, and materials for district wide promotions and general marketing of

school nutrition to increase school meal participation. o Collaborates with school community to inform and advocate for school nutrition programs and promote

nutrition and wellness.

o Works with the school division’s office of communications and public relations to provide content and develop press releases and other written communications about school nutrition program.

Program Implementation: o Assesses needs, develops objectives and materials, and provides training for school nutrition employees,

including implementing Manager Training classes. o Evaluates opportunities for extending programs to address nutritional needs of the school and

community. o Studies participation trends in the school meals programs and makes recommendations for program

improvement. o Identifies grant opportunities, completes applications, and implements awarded grants. o Works collaboratively with all stakeholders. o Represents the department at various local, state and national professional events. o Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of basic nutrition.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of food service management.

Thorough knowledge of HACCP or other types of detailed food safety systems.

Thorough knowledge of popular social media platforms used to market the programs.

Ability to plan and develop training and professional development programs for school nutrition managers and staff.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements A bachelor’s degree in a related field; Registered Dietitian Nutritionist within ninety days of hire. Experience in school nutrition programs is preferred; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills and abilities. License/Certification Registered Dietitian Nutritionist; within ninety days of hire Health Department Manager Certification; within ninety days of hire Physical Attributes Work requires the ability to drive a motor vehicle. Work requires normal physical effort including walking, sitting, standing for long periods of time, reaching, bending and climbing stairs. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to focus.

Chief Communications and Community Engagement Officer Job Description

Definition The employee who serves in this position performs executive level responsibilities related to leading Norfolk Public Schools’ public relations and communications with media and other groups as well as leading the school division’s community engagement efforts. The employee oversees the coordination and implementation of communications, media relations, and assists with crisis communications. Additionally, the employee is responsible for the development and implementation of division level initiatives that support community engagement. Work includes developing programs, plans, standards, policies, and procedures that promote and publicize Norfolk Public Schools’ programs, staff, and student activities. Other areas of responsibility include: the development of comprehensive communications campaigns for client departments; supervision of the division-wide volunteer program; maintenance of the school division’s website; supervision of all of the school division’s programming on Chanel 47; development and execution of written communications and crisis communications plans for the school division; production of division-wide publications; and execution of internal communications outreach. The work requires a broad knowledge of the organization and policies and regulations affecting the school division and the ability to interact effectively with executive team members and top level officials regarding sensitive, confidential, and controversial matters. Supervision Work is performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Schools. The employee supervises staff assigned to the Division of Communications and Community Engagement which includes the NPS Print Shop and the mailroom. Creates plans and strategies to address communication challenges/opportunities and public information needs on behalf of Norfolk Public Schools as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools.

Manages communication outreach endeavors, including maintaining media relations, organizing special events, and publishing all legal notices concerning the school division’s business.

Develops and implements the Norfolk Public Schools’ Communications Plan (including crisis communications) in conjunction with various internal and external department, and provides assistance, training, and tools for staff to assist in carrying out the communications plan.

Handles crisis communications efforts.

Assists with communications in crisis situations and responds to questions from the public and school employees regarding the actions of the School Board.

Master’s Degree and/or APR certification preferred. Extensive experience in public relations and communications and training in crisis/emergency communications. Minimum of three-five years of experience in the areas of public relations, communications, journalism, management, or a combination of these areas in the public or
