BRIEF HISTORY OF HONEY CREEK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
NEW CARLISLE, OHIO
Honey Creek Presbyterian Church was established in 1804 with a log cabin building located in what is now the New Carlisle Cemetery. It is the oldest continuing church in Clark County. The current structure built in 1832 has gone through some modifications along with the addition of the Memorial Room to the back. The most recent renovations were to repaint and carpet the sanctuary in 2003 in preparation of celebrating our 200th anniversary. The Christian Education building was constructed in 1963.
The vision of Honey Creek Church is to bring members of the church and community closer to Christ. Both a traditional worship service and a service in Spanish are held each Sunday along with several bilingual services throughout the year. Our Three Kings Epiphany service attracts over 100 participants each year. A “Beds for Babies” program started two years ago has distributed 21 cribs to families in need. Our church shelters the ecumenical Bethel Churches United Food Pantry and free clothes are distributed through the church’s Clothes Closet.

2. From the Stated Clerk, Synod fo the Covenant a. Notification of the results of the annual minutes review. The 2007 minutes of the
Presbytery of the Miami Valley (formerly the Miami Presbytery) were approved without exception.
b. Confirmation of the presbytery votes on proposed amendments of the synod’s By-laws. Amendments were approved and will take effect on January 1, 2009. Guidelines for electing new synod commissioners forwarded to the Committee on Nominations.
3. From the Board of Pensions – Dues delinquency reports, letter detailing pension experience apportionments and letter requesting updated salary information from minister members.
4. From Presbyterian Welcome – Letter concerning business facing the 218th General Assembly.

JUDICIAL CASES

The Miami Presbytery
The Administrative Commission met at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Ohio on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in order to install The Rev. Raymond Stewart as Pastor. Elder Tom Milligan, Moderator, called the meeting to order and opened the meeting with prayer. Elder Tom Milligan was appointed as Clerk of the Commission. MINUTES OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION FOR BELLE CENTER May 6, 2008
The Belle Center Administrative Commission met on Tuesday at West Liberty Presbyterian Church welcoming new members the Rev. Kevin Horrigan and the Rev. Ray Stewart. Background discussion included a brief history of the Belle Center Church and its former Ministers the Revs. Doug and Sandy Essinger-Hileman. The postponement of their Synod Trial was noted. Interim Pastor the Rev. Kathy Clark spoke of concerns of the Belle Center session and membership and her expression of a continuing need for the support of the Commission. The Rev. Stewart was named recorder. It was decided that the commission will meet again on Monday June 30, 2008 at Urbana. In the meantime Kevin Horrigan and Ray Stewart will attend Belle Center session meetings. Respectfully submitted, Arby Conn

MINUTES of ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSION for
IMMANUEL KOREAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NCD March 10, 2008
Those members present: Kevin Horrigan, Molly Jones and Fred Richards. Those absent: Edwin Kingsbury, Ann Peters and Lutrelle Rainey. Staff present: Dennis Piermont, Executive Presbyter and Doris Arnett Whitaker, Stated Clerk. Opening prayer by: Dennis The Minutes of the Jan. 14, 2008 were approved as distributed. A quorum being present, the commission voted to recommend the following to Presbytery at the May meeting:
1. To recommend that the presbytery proceed to the organization of the Immanuel Presbyterian Church; and authorize the moderator to appoint a steering committee composed equally of members of the presbytery and members of IKNCD;
2. To recommend that the Administrative Commission be dismissed with the presbytery’s thanks; and to authorize the moderator to appoint a new AC with the responsibility of working directly with the new steering committee.
Pastor Soo Kwang Kim, Young Ja Vaughn, treasurer of IKPC and Robert Manpyo Han, former President Korean Association in Dayton were invited to join the meeting. The preceding action was presented to them
Pastor Kim presented his report for January and February, which averaged 31 attendance and $7,719.05 average monthly offering. He presented the past activities and future plans. Pastor Kim also presented some results of a meeting of the IKPC members on March 2nd with 28 members present.
“On the Sunday March 2nd, all the members of Immanuel Korean Presbyterian Church got together for an affirmative meeting for the church revival and agreed upon two opinions.
1. All the members of the church will enroll and actively participate in a part of the church ministry.
2. We will propose the opinion below to the Administrative Commission.
We think that IKPC’s revival is what God wants, what our church wants, and what the Presbytery and the AC want. I remember hearing from the AC that we need about 70 members in order for IPKC to become a Systematic Church. But Dayton’s Korean population is not big. In a situation like this, we believe that having elders at IKPC will be very beneficial and we decided to propose this idea to the AC.
Having elders at the church will provide a sense of solidarity to Koreans who are considering IKPC as their home church.

There were some other opinions as well.”
There was discussion as to whether it would be better to forgo the grant funding to organize as soon as possible or to delay organizing in order the obtain continued grant funding. The Koreans felt this choice should be reviewed with the congregation. The decision of the members of IKPC will be necessary before the April meeting of the Commission. To cover both possibilities the following recommendation was approved by the Commission because if the request for funding must be approved by the May presbytery meeting.
“To recommend approval of the NCD grant monies for 2009 according to the schedule approved by the GA in 2005 (2009 - MP $8,000, synod $8,000, GA $16,000) The written annual report will be brought to the AC at the next meeting to and will be finalized before the May presbytery meeting.”

In response to the two alternative route for next steps by the IK NCD as discussed at the last AC meeting. “The IK, NCD congregation thought it was more prudent at this time to go with the second option of continuing to receive the grants while progressing to becoming a systematic church.”
“There was some discussion whether it would be possible to receive approval to become a systematic church and continue to receiver the NCD grants”
Doris checked and it is possible for a NCD to organize as a particular church and still receive remaining funds as long as they appear to be on track as demonstrated by annual reports.
Pastor Soo presented a draft of the “Annual Progress Report”. It was discussed and the AC felt that more narrative was needed and asked Doris and Dennis to work with Soo to complete it.
It was also suggested that the one page history be included with the report to presbytery.
Fred closed the meeting with prayer.

The Presbytery of the Miami Valley NORTHMINSTER MISSION FUND
GUIDELINES
INTRODUCTION Grants up to $5,000.00 are available to individual Congregations, Congregations in Partnership, Designated Presbytery Networks, and Validated Ministries of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, for the continued purpose of building up the body of Christ. Pending available funds, grants may be renewed for one year. In 2005 the Miami Presbytery voted to honor the history, work and ministry of the Northminster Presbyterian Church (Dayton) and the congregation’s gift to the presbytery of $222,538.00, representing the proceeds of the sale of the church property, by providing through the Board of Trustees, grants to be used in the areas of work of the Church Development/Redevelopment Committee and the Mission/Benevolence Committee. While as a result of the presbytery redesign these committees no longer exist, the spirit of the presbytery’s action has been realized by this grant program of the Northminster Mission Fund.
ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS
Through the Mission Grant Subcommittee of the Board of Trustees of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, the Northminster Mission Fund will be administered as follows:
1. For 2008, a maximum 20 grants will be awarded. 2. For 2008, a maximum aggregate of $40,000.00 will be awarded. 3. For 2008, a maximum of $5,000.00 for any single grant will be set. 4. All remaining funds will be invested as recommended and overseen by the Board of
Trustees, with any invested income to be used solely for the purposes of the Northminster Mission Fund.
5. Review the administrative process and criteria annually to determine the number of grants and aggregate awards for the coming year.

APPLICATION PROCESS Applications will be made to the Mission Grant Subcommittee of the Board of Trustees of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, which will be solely responsible for the review and awarding of grants. Applicants shall submit a completed Grant Application Form, which will include the following:
1. Brief description of the ministry, and how it participates in building up the body of Christ, including its necessity and timeliness, as well as indentifying those to whom this endeavor may minister.
2. Proposed budget for the ministry, including identifying other sources of funding. 3. Brief description of the organization and relationship of the participants, if the application
is made by a congregation in partnership. Applications for congregations in partnership with a non-church entity must submit proof of 501c3 status for the non-church partner.
4. A condition of a grant will be the submission of a follow-up report within one year. This report will review the effectiveness of the ministry.
5. Applications must be signed by appropriate persons in authority over the ministry, i.e. Pastors, Clerks, of Sessions, Executive Directors.

Sidney: First – Approve the part-time (25 hours per week) commissioned lay pastor covenant with Elder Agusto Medina for one year beginning Sunday, May 18, 2008 with duties as follows: ministry with a portion of the congregation and community who are Spanish speaking or bi-lingual, lead Bible study and Hispanic worship, teach Spanish classes, provide language translation, assist with community support functions; and voice and vote at presbytery meetings. Terms: cash salary $11.65 per hourly (approx $24,232 annually), free housing, mileage reimb, 4 weeks vacation and 2 weeks study leave annually. Rev. Francisco Pelaez has been assigned as mentor.
For information, the committee reports the following action taken on behalf of the presbytery:
1. Bellbrook – a. Approved the interim pastoral covenant with the Rev. Stan Gockel for one
year beginning February 8, 2008. Terms: cash salary $18,000; housing allowance, $30,000; pension dues to Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board of the American Baptist Churches, US 7,680; travel reimb up to $2,500; study leave reimb $1,200; prof expense reimb $500; 4 weeks vacation and 2 weeks study leave annually.
b. Granted the status of temporary membership in The Miami Presbytery, with full voice and vote, to the Rev. Stan Gockel for the tenure of serving Bellbrook as interim pastor.

3. Dayton: Fairmont – Approved the renewal of the parish associate relationship with the Rev. David Bickett through June 30, 2008. Terms: Salary $3,084; housing 1,523; professional expenses reimb including mileage 1,328; vacation 2.5 weeks; study leave 1 week.
4. Dayton: Memorial – Approved the renewal of the part-time (20 hours per week) stated supply appointment with the Rev. David Foubert for twelve months beginning January 1, 2008. Terms: Housing and effective salary $30,576, auto reimb at IRS rate up to 1,560; professional expenses/books reimb 2,184; vacation 4 weeks, study leave 2 weeks.
5. Dayton: Southminster – a. Approved the part-time (25 hours per week) stated supply appointment with

STATEMENT OF CALL Katie Ann Strednak
My mother told me growing up that I need not fret over profession or vocational direction. She simply encouraged me to find where my joys meet the needs of the world. In seeking such a destination, I entertained numerous professional possibilities from singing, to tutoring, to wildlife rehabilitation—the list goes on and on. Though many seemed to match her description of vocation, none of them felt quite right. Along the search, professors began asking if I had considered teaching at an upper level. Though I thought this was an interesting idea, I initially shrugged their suggestions off—why in the world would God call me to do such work? I had always had a passion for education, and I had greatly admired many of the teachers I had over the course of my life. How could I possibly be called to fill the role of teacher in others’ lives? Despite my feelings of inadequacy for the task, I decided to seriously consider their recommendations. I spoke with my campus pastor at the College of Wooster (hoping that he would help talk me out of it), and he helped me to understand that even if I couldn’t recognize the teacher in myself just yet, sometimes God graces us with people in our lives who can see who we really are for us when we have not yet figured out how to open our eyes. He told me that my gifts matched up for the task, and that my ability to see such beauty in the work of teaching was itself evidence that the beginnings of a professor really were somewhere within me. …But professors don’t just become professors over night! “What would I teach?” I wondered for quite some time. I spent a semester of study at LPTS as an undergraduate, thanks to a Lilly grant for exploration of vocation, and during that semester, I was taken under wing by several professors and mentors. That semester in seminary helped me to more clearly define where I thought I might find my teaching niche. Through a course entitled Missiological Issues on Ecology, I discovered my passion. This course opened my eyes to a whole discipline focused on how we can put our faith into action in the world, on how we can work to spread the good news through the work of our hands and our feet and our mouths! I began speaking with my mentors and professors about the possibility of mission work as a profession, and each thought that it fit extraordinarily well with my obvious love for learning about other cultures and traditions. The more I thought about the possibility, the more comfortable I became with it. Looking back on my life up to that point, I slowly began to realize that the kinds of jobs and activities I had previously entertained were all steeped in mission, whether framed as such or not. As I slowly matched and pieced all the variables together, I finally felt at peace. With other professional possibilities, I had felt great excitement, but never peace. When I began seminary nearly two years ago now, I expected that I would graduate and seek placements pertaining to mission work or begin doctoral study. I have found, once again, that God may have some additional plans. I have learned a great deal this past semester in my church placement at Grace United Presbyterian Church, and have come to understand through this placement that my gifts and skills also match up, in many ways (and again, much to my surprise!), for parish ministry. Week after week, I have grown a little more into my voice as a preacher, as a teacher, and as a church leader. The congregation at Grace Church has helped me to see that God is also calling me to share the good news, and to continue discerning what it means to live into that good news, in a church setting, as well as in the mission field and the classroom. They have let me visit them in hospitals and nursing homes. They have allowed me to hug them in their tears, and share in their joys. They have opened their homes and their hearts, and in doing so, they have helped shape me into a better servant and minister. In brief, through their willingness to let me be their student pastor, they have shown me what I think God knew all along. My work in the church need not be limited by the four walls of a

building—I still expect that my ministry will involve mission and teaching ministries outside of church buildings, per say—but God is also inviting me, calling me, into continued ministry in the parish setting in the years to come. I must say this whole discernment bit hasn’t been a cake walk! During these years in seminary, I have had some serious moments of questioning whether or not I was on the right track. During these moments, I have been blessed with comments and support from often unexpected places. One day, the president of the seminary, Dean Thompson, asked me where I would be applying for doctoral work. Because he caught me in one of these periods of questioning and doubt, I disclosed to him that I just wasn’t sure if I was PhD material after all. He told me that he believed I had gifts for the task, and that I needed to keep on going. Likewise, during the mission conference held in Louisville this past semester, I was blessed with the opportunity to offer my first Prayers of the People in a space filled with mission workers from around the world. I was petrified—but for the rest of the day, people came up to me to thank me for praying what was on their hearts. That was not me—that was God—but their comments were affirming that I’m on the right track. I think the piece of affirmation that has stuck with me the most came from an elderly woman at Grace Church after I gave my very first sermon. When I finished, she walked up to me and embraced me, and just whispered, “Your mama would be so proud.”
