The Fifth District includes the cities of Albany Berkeley Emeryville and Piedmont the West Oakland North Oakland and Rockridge communities and portions of the Grand Lake Manzanita Dimond District and Fruitvale neighborhoods
Berkeley Students Design
for the Common Good
A new hands-on designbuild program at REALM Charter School in Berkeley is challenging students to get their hands dirty while inspiring a sense of civic pride
in the process
Starting this fall 10th graders at the West Berkeley campus can enroll in a semester-long course called Studio H in which they will learn 2-D and 3-D design skills critical thinking mapping and construction skills The end product will be a public furniture project that will find a home in Berkeley Oakland or Richmond Over the course of the whole year a group of advanced students will endeavor to tackle a large-
scale project dealing with housing
Rather than leaving students with a series of designs to fill a portfolio the idea behind the program is to help young people learn the skills that will guide them from concept to completed project explained Emily Pilloton Founder and Executive Director of Project H the nonprofit organization
that teaches the course
The curriculum uses ldquodesign architecture and building to improve communities and educationrdquo says Pilloton She and Project Manager Matthew Miller started the initiative two years ago in Bertie County

Are you approaching retirement and wondering whether to age in place downsize to a smaller home or move to a retirement community Do you worry about caring for aging parents and helping
them to make decisions about housing and health care
A wealth of resources for housing and senior services is available to residents of all income levels in the Bay Area A number of service providers and experts were present on August 24th at the Downtown Oakland Senior Centerrsquos Housing Forum ldquoPlanning Your Next Moverdquo Supervisor Keith Carson delivered the keynote address to the more
than 100 seniors and caregivers who attended
An aging population presents challenges on a human level and for our economy In June 2009 the US Census Bureau estimated that 8 of the worldrsquos population is aged 65 and older By 2030 this population is projected to reach 12 and by 2050 the figure will be
16
In Alameda County the current population is estimated to be about 15 million people Of that population it is estimated that over 16 of
the population is 65 or older
As Supervisor Carson noted in his speech in the modern world children and aging parents may find themselves in different cities or
parts of the country
ldquoFrom an historical perspective whether we came from Europe

North Carolina a rural area dominated by cotton and tobacco fields Recognizing the lack of fresh food in the local markets the students designed and built a building that houses a local community farmerrsquos market for the town of Windsor NC The market now houses 30 vendors and provides a source of fresh food and a
community gather place for the local residents
How will this vision of humanitarian design and project
based learning translate to the densely urban East Bay
Studio H started off the year at REALM with a 3-day design challenge that posed the question ldquoHow might we get our hands dirtyrdquo Students created a wide range of projects including a cookbook and an outdoor
obstacle course
The curriculum is based on three principles
1 Design is all about creative problem solving and
critical thinking
2 Building something can activate hand to mind connections and instill in students a sense of pride
and accomplishment
3 Community engagement and citizenship allows students to design with the community in mind and teaches them important ldquosoftrdquo skills such as public
speaking at city council meetings
Students in the advanced skills class plan to undertake an ambitious project to research plan design and ultimately build a small backyard housing unit for a local family Common in Berkeley and surrounding areas these backyard units are an important source of steady
income for property owners
In addition to learning design and construction skills participants will also go through the process of identifying an ideal neighborhood vetting a family in an appropriate income range researching the local permitting process and navigating the city approval process for a construction project Students will build the structure on school property and later move the unit
to the clientrsquos property
As if that project wasnrsquot ambitious enough next year the organizers plan to construct a full scale single family house ldquoItrsquos project-based work on steroidsrdquo REALMrsquos
Principal Victor Diaz told Berkelysidecom in August
Berkeley Designcontinued from p 1 When it reaches capacity REALMrsquos middle school will serve 300 students 100 per grade The high school will serve 400 students The schoolrsquos mission is to ldquoto cultivate resiliency develop critical thinking skills advance knowledge through rigorous studies and equip students to serve our communities and the world in the
21st centuryrdquo

Senior Housing Forumcontinued from p 1
Africa Asia Central or Latin America we came from places where there was always a nuclear and extended family in the villagerdquo Supervisor Carson said ldquoAs villages grew into towns cities and states people began to travel a lot more and seek work away from the village As a result of this migration family structure
began to break up and take on different formationsrdquo
Despite the transiency of Americans 70 of people 65 and older live within an hour of a family member As those family members age and consider housing options they must consider various factors including neighborhood safety the physical safety in the home or rental assets that may be tied up in the residence the seniorrsquos driving ability and a desire for a warmer
climate
Panelists at the event spoke about the legal and tax implications of gifting a house to relatives the importance of home inspections and repairs before selling your home the benefits and consequences of reverse mortgages and various support systems if you
decide to stay in your home
A second panel delved into the different models for senior living the village model independent living memory care assisted livingskilled nursing and
continuing care
A July 2012 study from the Milken Institute called ldquoBest Cities for Successful Agingrdquo ranks the Oakland-San Francisco-Fremont area number 11 as one of the best places to live as an older adult The Oakland area itself has more than 150 assisted living facilities independent
living and convalescent homes
An example of a senior housing project funded by the County is Merritt Crossing located at 609 Oak St in Oakland The 70-unit brand new complex is for seniors age 55 and older more than half of the units will have
Section 8 vouchers
In closing Supervisor Carson emphasized the importance of saving for retirement He quoted Bernard M Baruch who advised that ldquoThe essence of any plan for financing old age is savingmdashto put aside some part of todayrsquos earnings for the future Anything that saps the value of savingsmdashand inflation is the worst single threatmdashis the enemy of the aged and of those who
expect to grow oldrdquo
