  • What happens when five strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a vipers strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite polygrass and the strength and stability that only Coretech can give, you wont break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every timeDeadly accurate.

  • Life is either full of joy or full of pain and if we can look for the joyit is a lot easier to traverse. Navigation through any hardship isbest when your outlook is positive and upbeat no matter how hardit is. We make the choice of how we respond and dancing throughthe pain is a little easier to contend with than the alternative.

I am always reminded of Job in the Bible. He was a man whohad everything, only to have everything stripped away from him.His life went from being a party, to being no kind of party at all. Itcertainly wasnt the party he had hoped for. He didnt lose his faithand he didnt quit believing. He just danced right through it and inthe end his reward was better that he could have ever expected. Hedidnt plan on things turning out the way they did, but he took themusic he was given and walked onto the floor. Job made thechoice to do the best he could with the song he had been given. Hedidnt understand it all but he tried to remain positive and upbeat.Somewhere he knew there was going to be an affirmative action. He might have been a little nervous wondering how it was allgoing to come down, but he was hanging on with all his might.

I heard someone say one time, A gem cannot be polishedwithout friction, nor can we be perfected without trials andtribulations. None of us are perfect, but we can be polished toalmost near perfection. It is kind of like a rainstorm. Most peopledont enjoy the thunder and lightning, but it comes with the rainthat nourishes and cleanses all that it touches. The rain is thelifeblood and something we need. What is the old saying, If lifehands you lemons make lemonade? We just have to put up withthe rest to get the best. You have to experience the thunderstormto see the rainbow.

Pick up your chin and put a smile on your face. Things are notas bad as you might think. We may not always understand whysomething happens, but if we trust in ourselves and in God, wewill make it through anything. The Bible tells us we can do allthings through God. He wants us to be upbeat and positive, dancing our way through every obstacle and proclaiming to theworld that there is hope surrounding us. There is music playingand we all have to make the dance our own. What goes aroundcomes around and our positive, encouraging and optimisticattitude will spread to others. Positive motivation and an upbeatattitude are contagious. It will spread to others. We are not perfect;we all make mistakes and we all change lives in some form orfashion. Someone is watching to see if you are dancing.

I want to leave you with another quote by author MariaRobinson. She once wrote, Nobody can go back and start a newbeginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. No matter what has happened before in your life, you can startnow, today, and head anywhere you want. Prepare today to danceyour way through every single struggle you face. You can beanything and do anything, so make it happen and that is just theway it is......

    NOVEMBER 2011JUST theWAY IT IS

hen this article comes out some of us will be atthe Cinch USTRC National Finals of TeamRoping (NFTR) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For

those of you who couldnt make it, I encourage you to plan ontaking part next year. Although the Cinch NFTR is a very busytime for me, it is something I really enjoy. I enjoy seeingeveryone and I enjoy watching my friends and roping familywin life-changing amounts of money. Not all of us will share inthis monumental winning experience, but I am excited for theones who do.

Speaking of life changing, it brought to mind a quote Iremembered from an unknown author, Life may not be theparty we had hoped for, but while were here we should dance. There is a certain amount of truth here. Things may not alwaysgo as we planned, but we should take things as they come andmake the best of the situation. Opportunity is everywhere, wejust have to take advantage. Many times things dont happen asplanned, but we have to have the patience and persistence toensure that we move forward in our lives no matter how thingsunfold. You cannot spend your life looking back. Regret can bea double-edged sword so we have to look forward. You may notchange the past but you can most definitely channel the future. You have to do all you can do to keep your eyes looking forwardand aiming for the horizon. Dont look down or you might fall.Dont look back or you will lose your sense of direction. Lookforward to what is coming at you and keep your aim straightand true.

We may not always agree with the path our lives are on, butthe choice is ours to make the best of it or to change the waythings are headed. No one forces us down the road we take, soit is up to us to dance, per say, and make the most of the stagewe are on.

There is a song recorded by Garth Brooks called TheDance. I played it during my grandfathers funeral. For someunknown reason it seemed to fit his life perfectly. The lyrics saysomething to the effect of, I could have missed the pain butthen I would have missed the dance. Life is full of struggle, pain, uncertainty and difficult choices. Not every road is pavedwith smooth black asphalt. There are a lot of potholes along theway. The lyrics continue with something to the effect, If I hadknown the way the king would fall I might have changed it all.If we knew ahead of time how things would transpire, there isno doubt we would do things differently. All any of us can do isthe best we can with what we have to work with at that point intime. Some decisions are based on a lot of information andsome decisions are based on no information at all. Sometimeswe have to fly by the seat of our pants. Regardless, we can gothrough life with a smile or a frown. We can gripe and complainor we can take a deep breath, hang on and plan for the best.

  • y now you have hopefully heardabout the significant announcement from USTRC about

the guaranteed one million dollars inadded money they will begin putting up in2012 at the Cinch National Finals of TeamRoping. In case you havent, I encourageyou to read about it in this issue before youcontinue reading this column. . . . OK,Youre back. Quite a deal, eh? The USTRC isguaranteeing at the Finals the money thatyou, Mr. and Mrs. Roper, used to providethrough your 5% per sanctioned ropingcontributions to the Shoot-Out Fund. Thisamounts to an incredible pact that USTRCis making with you to insure the futureviability of the worlds largest and richestteam roping. You are being taken off thehook for the money that USTRC will now,and for the forseeable time to come, supply. You know, if you are like me, the

bandying about of the sum of a milliondollars sounds real good but just what doesall that bandying mean to me. A milliondollars sounds really nifty but I didnt hearanyone say they were going to write ME acheck for a million. What am I going to getout of this deal? Well, I am from the USTRC(kind of) and I am here to help you. To recap, there are two major ways in

which this announcement impacts you theroper. First, you no longer will becontributing 5% out of the roping gross ofevery sanctioned roping to the NationalFinals Shoot-Out Fund. Secondly, with thisUSTRC million dollar guarantee, thesubstantial purses that have always beenforthcoming at the Finals will not beaffected. As far as the second issue isconcerned, the yearly December issue ofSuperLooper or the USTRC Results Website tab are the best sources for beingreminded of the incredible payoutsgenerated at the Cinch National Finals. There is no reason for me to dwell on that12 / NOVEMBER 2011

BHow Much More Can You Win in 2012?

    CONTINUED ON PAGE14

here. What I am going to dwell on is thehow the elimination of ropers 5% Shoot-Out contribution modifies a sanctionedroping payout. The natural thing to assumeis, hey, if we ropers are no longer going tocontribute 5%, the roping pot shouldincrease by 5%, yes? Well, not exactly. Itseasy to forget that the 5% was taken fromthe TOTAL roping gross, all the teamsmultiplied by all the entry fees, whereas the roping pot payout is taken from theroping gross less commission and Shoot-Out contribution, which is slightly less than 66.6%. So, 5% of the roping grossadded back to the 66.6% roping pot endsup adding more than 5% to the roping pot. Take a look at the Table (page 14) to seejust how much. Ive included in the Table two actual

ropings from 2011 and have listed theiractual payouts. The first roping was the #13at the Bayou Championships in Kinder, LAin January of 2011 and the second was the#8 PickDraw at the East TexasChampionships held in Athens in February.Right next to each roping I have placed ahypothetical roping. Hypothetical Roping#1 shows what the payout will be for a #13roping in 2012 that has the exact samenumber of teams and entry fee as theBayou #13. Hypothetical Roping #2 showswhat the payout will be for a #8 PickDrawroping in 2012 that has the exact samenumber of teams and entry fee as the EastTexas #8 PickDraw. Lets start with the Bayou #13. There

were 144 teams who paid $200 for a ropinggross of $28,800. After producerscommission and Shoot-Out Funddeductions the Ropers Pot amounted to$17,832. Checking the official USTRC 2011Rulebook, we find that a roping with 126 to250 teams pays two places for overall fasttime and the two places are split 60% forfirst and 40% for second. The Rulebook also

tells us that 5% of the ropers pot is paid tofast time overall with the remainder (95%)going to the Average. The number of placespaid in the Average is also based on thenumber of teams entered and Rule 7.3.2shows that 126 to 150 teams pays 7 placesin the Average with 6th and 7th placepaying 2 times the entry fee. Thepercentages paid to each place is takenfrom Rulebook Paragraph 7.3 for theremaining five places (1st - 36%, 2nd - 24%,3rd - 19%, 4th - 14% and 5th - 7%). Themath and the actual payout for the #13 atthe Bayou Championships is shown in thetable. The winners of the event earned$5,810 (Kyle Salley of Belmont, LA andCody Hogan of Pelican, LA).Now take a look at Hypothetical Roping

#1. This is the payout that will be paid in2012 assuming the exact same parameters -a #13 roping with 144 teams at $200 perteam. With no Shoot-Out Fundcontribution being made, the ropers potincreases from $17,832 to $19,580 as$19,580 is 66.6% of the roping gross of$29,400. The column next to theHypothetical Roping #1 payout is thepercent increase from the actual BayouChampionships to this new and improvedpayout format. Youll notice that the payoutincreases from $17,832 to $19,200 whichamounts to more than 5%. It is in fact 7.7%.Kyle and Cody may not be too happy withthis but if they had won this roping in the2012 season instead of 2011, they wouldhave won and extra $468, an increase intheir purse of 8.1%. Now you can see theimpact the new system is going to have onpayouts in 2012. Every team that wins thisyear will be taking home more money thanthey would have had they won last yearwith the exception of those who earnalloted multiples of an entry fee. Lets look at another roping, this time

the #8 PickDraw at the East TexasChampionships. For these comparisons Ihave purposely not picked ropings that payincentives because each roping pot isreduced by the number of incentive teamsand including an incentive in thesecomparisons, with the variability of thenumber of incentive teams, just muddiesthe water needlessly. But understand, incentive payouts are not going to changethe basic increases you are seeing in theseexamples. Incentive teams will win acommensurate increase as well. The #8 atAthens was a big roping with 253 teams at

$120 per team for a roping gross of $30,360(253 x $120). After producers commissionand Shoot-Out Fund deductions the RopersPot amounted to $18,732. Five percent ofthat, or $936, went to fast time and, according to the Rulebook, a roping with251 to 375 teams pays three places for fasttime overall. Those payouts are in the table. The Average, as per the Rulebook, in aroping with 251 to 300 teams pays 18 places(9th and 10th, 3xs entry fee - 11th - 18th,2xs entry fee). And those payouts are in thetable, all determined by the PayoutPercentages table in the Rulebook(paragraph 7.5). Moving over toHypothetical Roping #2, you will see that ifthis roping had been held under the newpayout format, the ropers pot would haveincreased from $18,732 to $20,240, anincrease of 8.1%. Thats because $20,240 is a

flat 66.7% of the roping gross of $30,360, thenew and simple calculation for ropers pot.

The East Texas #8 was won by JordanParsley (Troup, TX) and Nereo Cardona(Buckholtz, TX), earning $4,548. Had theybeen winners of our Hypothetical Roping#2, they would have earned an additional$428 amounting to a 9.4% increase inearnings. The percentage increase in all the Average payouts were 9.3% or betterwith the exception of those that earned a multiple of the entry fee. The fast timeoverall payouts all increased by 7.7%or more.

So there you have two very goodexamples of how the payouts are going tochange in this new and improved 2012season. Gains of 8%, 9% and 10% are goingto be typical. The fact that USTRC isproviding and guaranteeing one million

dollars at the Cinch National Finals meanswinners at this years sanctioned events aregoing to earn more money, plain andsimple. And the huge pots at the Finals willnot be diminished. And remember, producers win in this new scenario as well. They will be earning an additional 1.7% ofeach ropings gross. A $200,000 roping, forinstance, would mean a gain to a producerof $3,400. That should bring a gleam to aproducers eye.

It looks like everyones a winner withthis new USTRC plan of action. Theseexamples show you in black and white, what this new USTRC approach is going tomean to you. The numbers here are prettyexciting. The end result is a straightforwardand uncomplicated refiguring of the greateramount of dollars winning ropers are goingto be paid. The Revolution has begun.

by Ty HillmanHello Ropers,Well, the Regional Finals came and

went and some of you may be readingthis at the Cinch USTRC NFTR. If youare fortunate enough to be in OKC, Ihope you are having a great time. If youwere not able to attend this year, I hopeyou can come in the future because it is

truly a spectacular event. I am veryexcited and happy with the response tothe $12,800 added cash to the Gold Plusdivision at each Regional Finals thisyear. The Gold Plus payout was thehighest payback in any division ever atthe Eastern, Lone Star, and Southeast

Regional Finals and the highestpayback in any division in nine yearsat the High Plains and NorthwestRegional Finals. Thank you Gold Plusmembers for your continued support.I cannot wait to see how much moneywill be added next year.

USTRC is initiating a major changeto the 2012 payout structure that isreally exciting! Until now, at allUSTRC sanctioned events, a 5%Shoot-Out Fund contribution hasbeen held from every entry fee dollar. The money collected in this fund wasadded back to the ropers pot in theShoot-Out divisions at the CinchUSTRC NFTR, which constituted wellover a 100% payback in most cases. With that said, ropings at Sanctionedevents paid back 61.7% cash plus theprizes, which were contributed by

West Coast ropers had their chance to win big with this years West CoastRegional Finals. The team of Pedro Perez and Tony Lee Boggs tookadvantage of their opportunity in the Gold Plus roping, taking the eventtitle home after roping four head in 36.72 seconds. the producer. Starting in November2012, USTRC will no longer withhold aNational Shoot-Out contribution soeach Sanctioned event will offer a cashpayback of 66.7% plus prizes, which willstill be paid for by the producer. Youmay be asking where the added moneyto the Cinch NFTR will come from now? That is a great question and I am gladyou asked. USTRC will solely provide themoney and guarantees a minimum of $1 million annually added to the CinchNFTR. USTRC has set the standard inthe industry for years and this is moreproof of its continuing commitmenttoward the betterment of the sport.

There are two great ways to view thisdecision. First, the added money in theNational Shoot-Outs will be trueadded money, as it will not be withheldfrom the USTRC events anymore.Second, since the National Shoot-Outfund has typically hovered around the$1 million mark, there will beapproximately $1 million more cash

available in the ropers pot atSanctioned events throughout the year.Between the added money in the GoldPlus division at the Regional Finals andthe 2012 payback structure, I amexcited for the 2012 roping season.

Last month, USTRC sent anemail/poll to Gold Plus membersasking their opinion on adjusting theformat to the Gold Plus division ateach Sanctioned event. With theexception of a few format one events, including the Regional Finals, thestandard Gold Plus format in 2012 willbe $200/team with a 66.7% cashpayback. I am interested in knowing ifyou prefer the current Gold Plus formator if you would like a format of$300/team that pays back 75%. I havehad numerous discussions with roperswho told me they enjoy roping forhigher entry fees and higher paybacks.By changing the entry fee and paybackstructure, the cash returned to theroper would essentially increase the

payouts by 69%. The producer wouldstill contribute prizes. Below is atable with a comparison betweenthe two formats based on 100 teamsentered.

    Total Payout - Current G+ Format($200/team, 66.7% Payback)Proposed G+ Format($300/team, 75% Payback)Average $8,866 $14,963Incentive $3,800 $6,413Fast Time $667 $1,125

If you did not receive the poll byemail or you did not participate, please feel free to contact me byphone or email and let me knowwhat you think. I really value youropinion and I definitely do not wantto try and fix something that isntbroken but if there is an opportunityto improve your program, I wouldlike to do it.

he main difference between a high level header and a lower number header is that theprofessional header can rope on the gain, and the lower number header needs to rate and

match the speed of the steer before he ropes. Actually, most high-level headers prefer to rope on the approach because their hands are free to follow through and not busy

pulling on the horse. I have documented a series of pictures here designed to help any header atany level get better at roping on the gain.

A couple of things must happen for you to developinto the header you want to be. The first thing to noticein the series of pictures is that I keep my coils pointed tothe steers head throughout the run. Also notice that youmust teach yourself to deliver over the top of your lefthand, and not move it over when you rope. When youapproach the steer, as you get closer keep your bodyopen to the steer and the horns between your hands.

These pictures were taken at a trot, but start at awalk and build up to a slow run. This will make you startto read your range and start to get ready to rope faster. Also, you can do the same drill and throw a coil or two

as you come forward, andwiden a little as you deliver.

Most amateur rodeo guyswill drop away or duck whenthey reach. But the pros can reach, and they keep coming forward, up, and out when they reach.

  • here has been a lot of talkabout the USTRC and what is comingfor 2012. Some of the rumors are trueand some are just that, rumors. So hereis what you, as a team roper, can counton for 2012 from The New USTRC.

The theme for the 2012 season is tiedin with the United States of America andthe Declaration of Independence. TheUSTRC is also in a state where it canrevolutionize the sport of team ropingand do some things that have neverbeen done before. Just like the United States of America establishing itsindependence from Great Britain andthen venturing out on its own, theUSTRC is going where no one else hasgone before.

Undoubtedly the most revolutionarything that will happen in 2012 is that the

USTRC will guarantee at least $1Million added to the Cinch

    USTRC National Finalsof Team Roping

(NFTR). In yearspast there hasbeen that much

    money andmore,

but it came from the Shoot-Out Fund. Inother words, it came from the ropersand producers contributions atSanctioned events throughout the year.In 2012 that money will no longer comefrom you, it is guaranteed by USTRC. By USTRC not taking the Shoot-Out feeand with a full two-thirds of the potbeing paid back to the roper, that alsomeans that an estimated $1 Million willbe paid back at USTRC Sanctionedevents throughout the year. Without adoubt, this is revolutionary because it is something that has never been done before. Get ready, because you will not want to miss out on theopportunity to add some much neededcash to your pockets.

The 2012 season marks a historicjuncture in USTRC history as wecontinue our quest to provide greatervalue to our members, said USTRCPresident Kirk Bray. Now, ropers whocannot attend the Cinch NFTR wont seetheir money siphoned off to an event heor she cannot attend. The NFTR willremain intact with the enormous cashpurses and nominal entry fees that havemade the NFTR the preeminent team ropingyear after year.

With the correlation to the UnitedStates of America and the Declaration of Independence, one thing you willnotice is the new look of the USTRCSanctioned event ads. The fonts, thecolors and the graphics all tie into thattheme. The USTRC is proud to beAmerican and proud to offer the sameopportunities for its members. The heartand soul of the USTRC is the membership. The organization is for the ropers, by theropers and of the ropers. You as a memberare an integral part of what is happeningand where the USTRC is headed.

Another newsworthy item thatinvolves the USTRC, you and the sportof team roping is the fact that USTRCand the World Series of Team Ropinghave reached an agreement to uniteunder one classification system.

First of all, to squash any rumors, theUSTRC and WSTR have not merged. TheUSTRC has not purchased WSTR or visaversa, WSTR has not purchased USTRC.The two organizations have just unitedtheir classifications.

Team ropers will only have to worryabout one classification card and oneNational Classification number TRIAD. This will simplify things forropers and help to unite the sport. TheWorld Series of Team Roping will use theTRIAD Classification system and willhonor USTRC memberships. However, for those of you who do not wish to be a

part of USTRC or to purchase aUSTRC membership, WSTR will still

have memberships available, but theclassifications will be managed by theTRIAD system. What that means in plainEnglish is that your number will be thesame in both associations.

Theagreement with the WSTRwill go into effect onJanuary 2, 2012. This is agood deal for the sportand certainly a betterservice to ropers andproducers alike.

As you can see theteam roping Revolutionis here and we welcomeyou to the USTRC andthe United States ofOpportunity. In 2011,there was a lot goingon. Despite theuncertain economyand troubled worldaffairs, the sport ofteam roping and theUSTRC in 2011 hasfared better than mostexpected. In fact, more than $20Million was paid outduring the 2011season to USTRCmembers. Four anda half million ofthose dollars werepaid out at theCinch NFTR. In2012, those

numbers have the opportunity to growto even more astronomical levels.

Join the USTRC and the team ropingRevolution. The USTRC is going placesand they want you to jump on board

and come along. The organization is allabout providing opportunities for teamropers and for the betterment of thesport. It is time to make a move so comeon and be a part of the New USTRC.

The West Coast Regional Finals in PasoRobles, California is a great roping and onethat folks on the West Coast enjoy. Oneperson who is always present at the event is CathieTwisselman from Santa Margarita, California. Thisyear she had a stellar event and ended up being theCruel Girl Champion of the roping.

The West Coast Regionals is a really good ropingbecause it pays good and always runs good, saidTwisselman. The USTRC does good and they have avery high standard for their events and they stick tothat. You always have a fair chance to compete and Ilike the whole package that USTRC has to offer toropers. That is why we go to USTRC events and whywe enjoy the West Coast Regionals so much.

Twisselman began her quest in the #15 Shoot-Out where she teamed up with her son, Caleb to win fourth in the Average with a time of 48.19seconds on five steers. Although she didnt receiveany cash for her efforts the finish set the stage forher weekend.

In the #12 Shoot-Out she and her nephew,Sterling Twisselman finished third place in the Average.

Sterling and I rope quite a bit together, saidTwisselman. In fact, our whole family ropestogether a lot. One thing about our family is that westick together and rope together through thick andthin. We can always count on each other.

The team was 37.37 seconds on four and earned

$1,189 each for the placing. From there it only got better. In the #10 Shoot-Out, she and her husband,

Rowly finished the roping with a time of 40.50 secondson four steers. That time placed them first place in the Average.

One thing about Rowly and I is that we always sticktogether. We have been married for 38 years and we arestill going and still roping together, said Twisselman.Who says you cant rope with your husband or wife. Wedo it all the time and it works out just fine.

The victory earned the team $8,000, trophy Martinsaddles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. That wasthe move that placed Cathie on top and in the numberone position of the West Coast Cruel Girl race.

I really like the saddle I won, said Twissleman.Right now it is in the house and is on display.

The title of Cruel Girl Champion at the West CoastRegional Finals earned Twisselman a $750 cash bonus, her entry fee paid to the Cruel Girl Championships atthe 2011 Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping, and a plaque to hang on her wall. A couple of things arefor sure about Twisselman, she is a tough team ropingcompetitor and she will certainly be mounted on a greathorse. She was proud of her victories and is excited to bea part of the USTRC.

One thing about the USTRC is that they bend overbackwards for the cowboys and cowgirls and I reallyenjoy and appreciate that because not everyorganization out there does that, concluded Twisselman.

Rabies is one of the most feared diseases because itcan occur in all warm-blooded animals and is alwaysfatal. It is caused by a virus that affects the nervoussystem, and is transmitted by the saliva of an infectedanimalusually via a bite or by saliva coming into contactwith mucous membranes (such as the eye) or an opening inthe skin. This is an uncommon disease in horses and cattle butoccurs sporadically in these species when wildlife casesincrease, with more opportunities for exposure.

Kristy Bradley, Public Health Veterinarian (Oklahoma) saysrabies is a challenging and interesting disease because it canbe so different from one region to anotherin number ofcases and in species of wildlife most affected. There are severalvariants or strains of the disease, each of which occur mostfrequently in a certain species (bats, skunks, raccoon, fox andother canine variants, etc.). In the United States, rabiesinfection usually occurs in specific geographic areas and

transmission is generally within a certain species, withoccasional spillover to other species and surrounding areas.

In states like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and other plainsstates where there is skunk rabies, we tend to see it more rabidcattle and horses, compared to other regions of the country. Ifyou have susceptible animals (horses and livestock) inproximity with an animal population such as skunks that canbecome rabid, there is always the opportunity for interaction, she explains. The skunks are already there, often wanderingthrough the pastures and barnyards, so there is more chanceof exposure to rabies.

Outbuildings or barns make perfect habitat for skunks. Many farmers and ranchers report that they have a den ofskunks under a building, and theres a food source (rodents, feed, pet food, etc.) so it makes a perfect spot for skunks. Theycan co-exist with domestic animals but if theres rabies in theskunk population it becomes a potential hazard, she says.

Dr. Carolyn MacAllister, Veterinary Teaching Hospital,Oklahoma State University, says this disease goes in cycles in

Vicki Eliot of Amarillo, Texas, had thetragic experience of losing a filly torabies in June 2011. Im 57 years old,Ive had horses all my life, and Id neverheard of a horse having rabies. We nevergave rabies shots to horses when I wasgrowing up, she says.

My yearling was in a box stall so Idont think anything could have come inand bitten her. Maybe she stuck herhead out and something bit her on the

nose, says Eliot.I got off work on a Saturday and

went to feed her and she was eating, butwhen I ran my hand along her back andacross her rump she sunk down like itreally hurt. I didnt see anything wrongso I got her out of the stall and walkedher around to check her better. Shegrazed a little and I petted her and puther back in the stall.

The next morning, the filly was downand couldnt getup. I thoughtmaybe she wascolicky. Then shestarted kicking herhind feet andcouldnt get herfeet under her. Sowe called the vet,and the first thinghe asked was ifshed had rabiesshots. He gave hersome medicationand she got up.Then she wentback down that

night (Sunday), and we put her downMonday night. The vet did an autopsyand sent the brain, and the test cameback positive for rabies, says Eliot.

My filly didnt get mean oraggressive; she just couldnt get up. Shewas kicking and thrashing in circles, beating her head on the ground, so weeuthanized her. Then I had to take therabies shots because I tried to feed her.Id also held her head up so she coulddrink. She was still drinking and eatingright up till the last. This is unusual, because most horses have trouble eatingand drinking. Rabies in horses can bevery confusing when trying to diagnosethe problem, because symptoms can beso varied.

Eliots veterinarian wasnt sure it wasrabies until after the test came back, because the filly wasnt acting like arabies case. In most situations theanimal is unable to swallow. The mainreason we put her down was becauseher back legs werent working and shecouldnt get up. She was scraped andbloody from trying, and scared. She washurting herself, so we put her down.

She recommends that all horseowners vaccinate their horsesagainst rabies. Its an inexpensivevaccine, and good insurance, especially since this is a zoonotic

disease and you could get it from your horse, shesays. Rabies in horses is not typical of what we usually think of in terms of symptoms, like youd seein a dog or cat. A horse may be just dull and not eating or drinking.

Horses with rabies may look like they have colic,or may just appear lame. We had a horse come in herewith a concurrent respiratory disease, and peoplewere exposed because at first we didnt realize thehorse had rabies. This horse had pneumonia, but wasalso showing neurological signs, so the owner didntpick up on it, she says.

What I have observed in rabid animals is inabilityto swallow and in some cases the animal appears tobe choked. You go to pass a stomach tube and it goesright down, so you get an endoscope to check thingsfurther and theres no blockage and the trachea is

    SUPERLOOPER MAGAZINE / 27

This Map depicts regions of the country where certain strains of the rabies virus are endemic invarious wildlife species.

Eliot had to take the full course ofpost-exposure rabies vaccinations andthe veterinarian had to have two shots.Hed already had the vaccination so heonly needed the boosters. A couplepeople were helping me with the filly, however, and they had to take the shots, too, she says.

The filly was boarding with two otherhorses. I dont know if she got the rabiesat that farm, or where I moved her from, three months earlier. I never saw anymarks on herno cuts, no bites. Therewere a lot of rabies cases in skunks inthat region but Eliot was never surewhat bit her filly.

I suppose its my fault because Inever vaccinated her for rabies. Most ofus neglect to give the shots because wedont think it will ever happen to us. Itstoo late for my filly, but a lot of peoplehere vaccinated their horses because ofwhat happened to my horse. So onegood thing did come out of thisbecause most people were notvaccinating. The virus uses the nerve pathways inthe body to travel toward the brain. Theinfected animal does not show signs ofdisease until the virus gets to the brain,

where it multiplies and causesneurological problems. Once itreaches the brain, the virus canthen be shed into the salivaryand nasal secretions, enablingthat animal to transmit thedisease to other animals.

How long this takes, fromexposure to signs of illness,

varies from case to case, depending onwhere the susceptible animal was bitten(or contacted the saliva of a rabidanimal). A bite on the face (or salivacontact with the eyes) would take lessincubation time than a bite on the lowerleg, because the virus would not have totravel so far to get to the brain.

If the owner didnt know theiranimal was bitten, they might not knowthere is a problem until the animal startsshowing signs of rabies. In most cases, itwas caused by an unrecognized attackfrom a rabid wild animal. The owner issuddenly dealing with the outcome ofthat encounterthe disease developingin their horse, cow or calf, says Bradley.

Vaccination of all horses isimportant. We also see humanexposures when people are workingwith cattle, like FFA and 4-H animals.Any cattle that have much contact withhumans should also be vaccinated. There are two purposes in providingrabies vaccination to animals. One is toprotect their health and preventdevelopment of the disease, but just asimportant is to provide a safety bufferfor humans, she explains.

Humans are rarely exposed to rabiesthrough wild animals, but we do see alot of human exposure when they havedomestic animalspets or livestockthat become rabid. People have to gothrough the post-exposure vaccinationsif they are truly exposed to saliva from arabid horse or cow, she says.

If you seea skunk, fox, raccoon orcoyotechasing youranimals, orsee a group ofcattle or

fine and you realize this is rabies! Youhope you wore gloves!

A horse may show quite a range ofclinical signs. There is nothing you cando to treat an animal onceit has rabies, so its bestjust to vaccinate, saysMacAllister. This year inTexas there was a dramaticincrease in rabies cases inwildlife and also inunvaccinated domesticanimalspossibly due tothe drought and the fact that more wildanimals were moving closer to cities, farms and ranches in attempts to findfood and water, putting them in directcontact with horses, livestock and pets.

Dr. Jason Turner, Extension HorseSpecialist, New Mexico State University, says there have been several cases ofrabies in his state so far this year, including a horse in Eddy County insoutheastern New Mexico, he says.

The sick horse was taken to a Texasveterinary facility for treatment, beforeanyone realized it had rabies. Familymembers and the veterinary staff wherethe horse was treated were all exposedto the infectious salivaso 3 people inNew Mexico and several members of theveterinary staff in Texas had to have therabies vaccine to protect them fromdeveloping rabies, says Turner.

Any time someone is examining ortreating a horse where rabies might beeven a remote possibility, they shouldwear gloves to prevent direct contactwith saliva. Just getting a drop of salivafrom a rabid animal on intact skin is not sufficient to transmit the virus, says Bradley.

You need a break in the skin and ithas to be a very fresh, open wound or cutthats less than 24 hours old. It has topenetrate into the tissues enough tocome into contact with a nerve. Thisvirus does not spread in the bloodstream. It spreads along the nerves. It must firstget into the subcutaneous tissueusuallythrough a bite, but sometimes through afresh break in the skin. If the salivacontaining the virus gets into that opentissue, it may be sufficient for virusparticles to latch onto a tiny nerveending. Then the virus has to multiply fora period of time before it starts to ascendalong the nerve, says Bradley.

horses out in the pasture all spooked, ora curious calf or horse walking up to awild animal thats acting strangely, precautions should be taken at thatpoint. If you think your animal has hadpossible exposure to a rabid animal, consult with your veterinarian andmanage that exposure (treat/quarantinethe animal) rather than riskdevelopment of disease, says Bradley.

Hopefully its a vaccinated animal.Even if you have a horse thats current onits vaccinations as part of yourpreventative medicine protocol, if yousee an encounter with a skunk, it isimportant to give the horse a boostervaccination to create more antibodies. This will help neutralize any virus thatmay have gotten into the body, she says.Cattle and sheep can also be vaccinatedannually to protect them from rabies.

Recently the AAEP (AmericanAssociation of Equine Practitioners) hasincluded rabies in their list of corevaccines, recommended for all horsesregardless of their location and use. Itsvery cheap insurance, versus having totake the treatments if a person was

exposed to rabies by handling a sickhorse, says Turner. All of our domesticanimals can get rabies, but the ones youwill be interacting with most closelysuch as pets and horsesshould alwaysbe vaccinated, he says. Even if therehasnt been any rabies in your area, yourhorses may be at risk if you take themsomewhere else for competitions or tobe bred, or sell them to someone in adifferent part of the country. Its best justto vaccinate.

Rabies has been with us a long timeand there is some debate as to whetherit existed here in the wildlife beforeEuropean settlement, or whether it wasbrought with them to North America. In the American colonies in the late1600s there were reports of caninerabies and there were outbreaks, thedescriptions of which sound like rabies. But we dont know if it was brought overwith their dogs that were incubating thedisease (and introduced it to thiscontinent) or whether it was alreadyhere, says Bradley.

Even though rabies is one of theoldest diseases spread between animals

and humans, the level ofmisunderstanding and confusion aboutrabies is still high and there are manymisconceptions. Animal owners need tolearn more about this devastatingdisease and take no chancesprotectingtheir animals (and themselves) byvaccinating those animals. The vaccine isvery effective for prevention.

There are several rabies vaccinesavailable and they arerelatively inexpensive($3.50 to $6.50 peranimal, depending onthe company). Thereare only 20 states in which you can orderand administer the vaccine yourself, however. Most states require that thevaccine be obtained from andadministered by a licensed veterinarian, which will cost a bit more. But this givesa record of vaccination, which can bevery important for public healthpurposes. It may also be of great valuewhen trying to determine if a sick animalhas rabies or some other disease. If theanimal is current on its vaccinations, thiscan help rule out rabies as the cause. n

Wrapping up the season prior to the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping,Rebecca Neuhaus of Huntsville, Texas has taken a solid lead in the Cruel Girl Standings. She has added an additional $2,000 and some change over the last month to give her acushioned lead of more then $6,000 over fellow Texan, Jackie Hobbs. Tish Luke fromFlorida rounds out the top three but, like Hobbs, has remained stagnant in the teamroping earnings department over the past month. Both Luke and Hobbs will have torope-up at the Cinch NFTR to make up ground if they want to take home the covetedtitle of 2011 Cruel Girl Champion. However, Neuhaus will no doubt be in attendancewith plenty of chances to insure she wins this years title and all of the goodies that go along with it!
