Weird Geography
The Largest Wave
The highest wave ever recorded was in Lituya Bay on the southern coast ofAlaska. In July 1958 a massive landslide was triggered by an earthquake, causing a tsunami wave that reached an impressive 1720 feet (524m) high!
Amazingly, two fishing boats in the bay survived the event, although a thirdboat was washed inland, killing its crew.
If you are wondering how the height was measured - scientists just lookedfor the high water mark on the surrounding hills, then measured down tosea level.
