Welcome to the first magalog from More Than Curtains. I founded this bou-

tique business in 1995, having previously owned Lucia’s Interiors since 1989. So, yes I have been in this industry quite a while and have seen many trends in window furnishings come and go.

A few years ago my daughter, Elise became my business partner. We are a fantastic duo and together we bring an unparalleled level of experience, design ideas and service, all dished up with huge smiles because we love what we do!

curtains and pelmets may at first appear prohibitive, but when you factor in the initial cost of air conditioning in an average home, together with the ongoing operating costs, it becomes apparent that a more passive and environmentally friendly alternative needs to be considered.

Most new homes are water ef-ficient; appliances are energy efficient; some areas have re-

cycled water or grey water for irrigation; yet what’s the public thinking on efficient window treatments? Think about it: if you had to give your home an energy rating based on ef-ficiency in all things - water, energy, heating/cooling, and so on - how high a score would you give? Are your windows covered properly? If they’re not, then your score would be considerably lower than some-

one who has invested wisely in their window coverings.

So enlist the help of the More Than Curtains team. They will assist you in finding the best window coverings for your thermal requirements.

Ideally, the goal of window coverings is to trap air be-

tween the glass window and the back of the window cover-ing to prevent it escaping into the room, thereby making the room more temperate.

Glass is a conductor, which is why a glass full of cold liq-

uid will be cold to the touch, and a glass of hot liquid feels hot. Many Aussie homes are built using lots of glass (as it’s cheaper than most build-

ing materials), so temperature transfer is a huge problem. There is, however, an easy way to deal with the heat/cold loss.

It’s important to note that not all window coverings perform equally, even those advertised as “blockout”. Venetians and vertical blinds are the poor-est performers as they have gaps that impair the coverage of the window. Studies show that heat/cold transfer is still at 100% with these products. Roller blinds perform slightly better at 92%, but you’d be surprised at how much can seep through the tiny gaps

All MTC window coverings come with a minimum 3-year

warranty, but here’s a few tips to keep them looking like new!

Curtains, blinds and shutters can be a major investment and of course you will want to make them last for many years. Before you call in the dry cleaners, try these sim-

ple care tips first. Please note: Be-

fore you do anything you must try these techniques in an inconspic-

uous area of the window covering (such as the back of the hem).

SHUTTERS & VENETIAN

BLINDS

A damp cloth or baby wipes will generally remove any accumulat-ed dust or grubby marks. Never use abrasive cloths or solvents as these will damage the stain or paint finish. A light wipe with methylated spirits can revitalise the look of your shutters and Venetian blinds.

ROLLER BLINDS, VERTICAL

BLINDS & PANEL GLIDES

Most grubby marks on roller blinds can be removed with a soft pencil eraser. Oily stains can be treated with a dust of baby powder. Leave on overnight and gently brush off in the morning. You may need to repeat this process a few times to eliminate the stain completely.

CURTAINS, FABRIC BLINDS

& SOFT FURNISHINGS

Some curtains can be hand washed at home, but always check the fabric composition first. Be sure to remove all hooks before washing a curtain.

A large number of marks can be removed from fabric by blotting (not rubbing) with unscented baby wipes. If this doesn’t work, blot a small amount of dishwashing liq-

uid onto the stain and leave to sink in for a few minutes before blotting away with a damp cloth.

Notice how we stress to BLOT rather than WIPE? This is to contain the mark rather than spread it around, and to keep from damaging the fabric.

TIP:Tracks feeling sluggish? Spray inside the groove at the back of the track with silicone spray to smooth things along. Silicone (unlike oil-based lubricants such as WD40) dries clear and won’t damage your beautiful fabrics.
