1 Superintendent Search Service Northwest Arctic Borough School District Superintendent Vacancy Kotzebue, Alaska The Board of Education of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District is conducting a search for a superintendent. The successful candidate should have strong skills in managing principals at multiple school sites to improve student success through both academic core curriculum as well as career/technical education. Demonstrate experience with effective teacher recruiting and retention efforts. Integrating indigenous culture into the curriculum will enhance a candidate’s potential for selection. The board is especially interested in a proven leader that recognizes the importance of indigenous language\culture preservation and its impact on student health and academic success. The Superintendent is also responsible for oversight of administrator functions of the District Office. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate a history of working collaboratively with boards, diverse communities, and school staff. A salary range between $145,000 – 165,000 (DOE) for a 260-day contract with an attractive fringe benefit package is being offered to the successful candidate. “LeadingtheWay”TheNorthwestArcticBoroughSchoolDistrictBoardofEducation,comprisedof11Boardmembersfrom8differentcommunities,isproudoftheeducationalprogramofferedtotheapproximately2116students.Studentsareprovidedrich,comprehensiveprogrammingfromall13pk-12schools,theboardingschoolandtheadultvocationalcenter.Despitebudgetarychallenges,theDistricthasbeenabletocontinueitsyouthleader,counselor,andvocationalprograms.InterestedhighschoolstudentsareaffordedavocationaleducationthroughtheStaroftheNorthwestMagnetSchoollocatedinKotzebue.

TheNorthwestArcticBorough(NAB)isthesecondlargestboroughinAlaska,comprisingapproximately36,000squaremilesalongtheKotzebueSound,Wullik,Noatak,Kobuk,Selawik,BucklandandKugrukRivers.Theareaencompasses35,898.3sq.milesoflandand4,863.7sq.milesofwater.Theregionexperiencesatransitionalclimate,characterizedbylong,coldwintersandcoolsummers.Temperaturesrangefrom-52to85degreesFahrenheit.Totalprecipitationaveragesnineinchesperyearandaverageannualsnowfallisforty-seveninches.

History,CultureandDemographics

Inupiatpeoplehaveoccupiedthisregionforatleast10,000years.“Kikiktagruk”wasthehubofarctictradingroutes.KotzebueSoundwas“discovered”in1818bytheGermanLt.OttoVonKotzebueonbehalfofRussia.In1899apostofficewasestablishedinKotzebue.MostcitiesintheNABdevelopedassupplystationsforInteriorgoldmining,andweresettledaroundschoolsandchurches.NABwasincorporatedasaFirstClassBoroughin1986andbecameaHomeRuleBoroughin1987(NorthwestArcticBoroughCode).Thepopulationofthe

communityconsistsof85.8%AlaskaNativeorpartNative.NABpopulationisprimarilyInupiatEskimo,andsubsistenceactivitiesareavitalpartofthelifestyle.Residentsrelyoncaribou,reindeer,belugawhale,birds,fourspeciesofseals,berries,greensandfish.Theunemploymentrateatthattimewas15.55%,although46.42percentofalladultswerenotintheworkforce.Themedianhouseholdincomewas$45,976;percapitaincomewas$15,286.

CommunitieslocatedwithinNABincludethesecond-classcitiesofAmbler,Buckland,Deering,Kiana,Kivalina,Kobuk,Kotzebue,Noorvik,Selawik,andShungnakandtheunincorporatedcommunityofNoatak.Thereare12schoolslocatedinNAB,attendedby2,011students.
