The Aberdeen School DistrictBoard of Directors is looking foran outstanding superintendent whowants to make Aberdeen his/herhome and who desiresa lengthy tenure with the district. Tothat end, the Board is willingto consider alternative candidates.
The Board is replacing Dr. TomOpstad, who provided outstandingleadership and who is retiring.

ABOUT THE DISTRICTThe Aberdeen School District has a student population of approximately3,300 students in preschool through Grade 12. More than 75 percent ofstudents receive free or reduced-priced meals. The staff includes more than450 highly qualified and experienced certificated and classified individualswho are committed to providing the best educational opportunities to adiverse student population. The school district has five elementary schools,one junior high, one traditional high school, and one alternative high school.The community has a long history of supporting school levies and bonds.
The district is proud of the many programs it is able to provide to studentsthanks to its strong financial management, highlighted by its one-to-onetechnology for students in grades 2 through 12, award-winning career andtechnical education programs, as well as strong music and athleticprograms. In addition, the district supports a K-12 AVID program.
In the Aberdeen School District, students' backgrounds, learning styles, andstages of development are embraced. When talking to school boardmembers and district teachers and staff, there is a strong sense thateveryone is in this together and that all students belong to them.

COMPENSATION
The School Board will negotiatea multi-year contract with thesalary commensurate withcomparable school districts inthe region.
It is an expectation for theSuperintendent to reside in theschool district.
APPLICATIONPROCEDURES For full consideration, pleasesubmit the following material byFebruary 21, 2017. The districtretains the right to acceptapplications until the positionis filled.
Cosmopolis. This trio of rural cities forms the commercial and industrial coreof Grays Harbor County and almost half of the county's residents live here.While Olympia is less than an hour away, and Seattle is less than two hoursaway, most necessary services are available on the Harbor. The townshave compact, walk-able downtown areas that are not far from gracious,early 20th century homes in nice neighborhoods.
Aberdeen is a special place tolive. The climate is mild and wet,there is nature - beach ormountains, forest or lake - at yourdoorstep, and the cost of living isexceptionally reasonable. Thereare a lot of intangibles that makeliving on the Harbor a delight,including residents who exude acan-do attitude and who see theircommunity as on the up-swing.Primarily, Aberdeen has a strongsense of community with deeproots in the timber and maritimeindustries. When times are tough - and the Harbor has seen its share oftough times - people pull together.
In addition, people get to know each other, and are supportive of localinstitutions, whether they are voting for school levies or buying raffle ticketsfor the Aberdeen Rotary Club's annual scholarship auction. And they'resupportive of each other, especially when it comes to helping others inneed. Community participation in the Relay for Life and the United Wayfundraising drives is among the highest in the state.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIESThe Board has identified the following leadership challenges andopportunities for the next superintendent:
Continue to provide leadership for schools with a diverse studentpopulation in a high poverty environment.Recruit and retain outstanding teachers, administrators, and supportstaff.Continue to develop the full potential of the one-to-one technologyinitiative.Address issues related to aging buildings.
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONSThe Board seeks candidates with desired skills and qualifications:
Superintendent or central office experience preferred. Teachingexperience preferred.Demonstrated success working with an at-risk student population.Good communicator with strong listening skills.Willingness to be highly visible in schools and the community.Collaborative.Humble, honest and approachable, with a good sense of humor.An innovator who understands how to lead change.Has a passion for the work.
