The SearchThe Waterloo Local School District Board of Education is seeking qualified applicants for the position of superintendent. The successful candidate will replace Matthew L. Montgomery, who has served as superintendent since July 2013. Steve Horton, school board services consultant at OSBA, is assisting the board with its search.
The DistrictThe Waterloo Local School District is a consolidation of Atwater and Randolph townships in Portage County and serves students in grades kindergarten through 12. Its mission statement — Waterloo Local School District, in cooperation with our families and community, cultivates academic excellence through high quality instruction and experience-based learning connecting students’ lives to their futures — conveys the district’s commitment
to embracing student achievement in a 21st century world.
The district, who’s mascot is the Vikings, operates in a unified upgraded campus that is the result of passing a bond issue and maintenance levy in 2000. The elementary building serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students in grades six through eight attend the middle school and grades nine through 12 attend the high school.
The Waterloo Local School District is committed to working with each student through a comprehensive curriculum that includes an online digital academy. Students also are offered career training at the Maplewood Career Center.
The CommunityThe district is ideally located south of Cleveland, between Akron and Youngstown. It is known for a quiet rural lifestyle and has recently become a popular location for a white-collar professional community.
This beautiful area of the state features wonderful recreational areas at the West Branch State Park and Berlin Reservoir. It also is home to the annual Portage County Randolph Fair. There are many opportunities for higher education within an easy driving distance such as University of Akron, University of Mount Union, Kent State
University and Northeast Ohio Medical University.
QualificationsA superintendent license is preferred and the successful candidate should have strong building-level and central office administrative experience. A willingness to live within a reasonable distance to the Waterloo area and be visible and active in the community is preferred. In addition this person must demonstrate:
l A commitment to strong, positive board/superintendent relations.
l Excellent speaking and listening skills and an ability to instill trust in the community and staff at all levels.
l The ability to work as an articulate, straightforward communicator with strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability

l Leadership and the ability to publicly celebrate and market the district’s successes.
l Leadership that will develop and support teaching and administrative talent.
l Sound decision making to firmly support issues that affect the school community and support implementing the school board’s decisions.
