Issue #8 March 2016 Newsletter
Hosting any type of event is not an easy task and we would like to thank all
those that helped make the Girls’ District Tournament a success. People are need-
ed to make food for and supervise the hospitality room and lunchroom, to run the
clock and shot clock, to keep book and take tickets, and to clean up when the
events are over. We were able to fill all those duties for all three days and the tour-
nament came off without a hitch. Once again, thank you to all that volunteered.
Some of the March activities that will be occurring include the following:
the Girls’ State Basketball Tournament which will run March 2nd thru March 4th in
Grand Forks; the Boys’ Regional Basketball Tournament March 6th, 7th, and 9th in
Devils Lake; the third quarter will end on March 17th; the Honor Society will have
its induction banquet on March 20th; the juniors and seniors will attend the State
Legislature in Bismarck on March 22nd; the Speech Team will host the Bearcat
Speech Meet on March 25th; and the Vocal Music recital and Vocal Music Contest
will both be held on March 28th and March 30th, respectively.
All of our route buses and city buses now have cameras on them. The
quality of the recordings is Hi Definition and is easy to view. Discipline issues have
been at a minimum and we hope to see that continue. The city bus route has run
with few issues and we would like to thank the students and parents for their coop-
eration. The last day we will run the city bus route (morning and afternoon) will be
March 17th, which also happens to be the end of the third quarter.
The state has nearly completed its plans to comply with the Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA) and is requesting public comment on what has been complet-
ed to this point. The website to view the plan is located here: https://www.nd.gov/
dpi/uploads/1494/SecondDraft_ND_ESSA_State_Plan.pdf and the website for pub-
lic comment is located here: https://www.nd.gov/dpi/SchoolStaff/SSI/ESSA/plan/.
If you have any questions please contact the school and we will do our best to an-
swer those questions.

I would like to congratulate our students on their achievements this month.
We have academic, fine arts, and athletic accomplishments which need to be
recognized.
On February 6, 2017 we held our local MATHCOUNTS competition where
Mic Bjornstad, Kole Graber, Dustyn Nelsen, and Kansas Sailer competed both as
individuals and a team. Individual and team scores were sent to our Region 2 office
with the hopes of being able to send either individuals or teams to the state
competition in Bismarck. Dustyn Nelsen’s scores placed him in the top 8 for Region
2; therefore he will represent North Star and Towner County on March 6, 2017 in
Bismarck at the State MATHCOUNTS Competition.
Makayla Erickson, Dominique
Maysonet-Becerril, Hayden Hagler, and Madison
LaLonde competed in the local Spelling Bee on
February 22, 2017. Dominique took first place
while Makayla took second, and they will also represent North Star School and
Towner County on March 20, 2017 in Bismarck at the State Spelling Bee.
The 2017 North Dakota Academic All-State Teams have been selected, and I
would like to congratulate Madison Borstad for being named to the Honorable
Mention Team.
Lexi Kiecker is our first qualifier for the State Speech Meet. She qualified in the
Impromptu Category and will compete on April 29, 2017. Good luck to the rest of the
speech team as they continue with their competitions.
Good luck to the North Star Robotics team who will compete in Duluth, MN on
March 1-5, 2017 and to the music students who will be competing later this month
in the vocal contest in Minnewauken.

Those who un- derstand Love and
Logic know that sincere empathy is
the cornerstone upon which the
entire house is built.
It’s the gift that allows our children to learn wisdom from life’s trials and tribulations… rather than
developing, discouragement, and resentment.
Empathy demonstrates love. Love provides hope. Hope provides the motivation our kids need to choose
what’s healthy rather than destructive.
For forty years, the Love and Logic message has remained the same:
Hope and pray that your kids make plenty of affordable mistakes when they are
young.
Hold them accountable for these mistakes with sincere empathy.
Do this so they can learn when the “price tags” are still small.
Many parents comment, “Empathy is the hardest part! Too often my own frustration and
anger get in the way.”
Providing empathy requires that we tolerate messiness rather than trying to create a sanitary life
for our kids.
In my book, Parenting for Success, I discuss why messiness is necessary for developing the
attitudes and skills required for adult success.
Deep in our parental hearts is the wishful dream that our children will enjoy a fairy tale life
where all issues are resolved cleanly and they live happily ever after.
Ironically, this well-intentioned urge often makes it more challenging for us to provide
empathy when our kids need it the most.
Lectures, threats, frustration, and anger provide an illusion of control,
a fleeting sense that we’re getting something done.
Empathy requires a strong conviction that we cannot fix others…
but that life’s challenges are gifts that build maturity.
