Large Group Leader GuideLesson 2 of 3

Power UpAll children in grades 1-6 meet for the Large Group assembly. The leader shows the condensed version of the Superbook adventure, plus the Bible Background video. After Power Up, teachers take the children to their classrooms for the Small Group lesson.

Video SynopsisSuperbook takes Chris, Joy and Gizmo to Babylon to meet Daniel, who prays three times a day. When King Darius decrees that no one may worship anyone but him or face death, Daniel is thrown into the lions’ den. God protects Daniel from harm, and the king commands everyone to worship the one true God.

For this Power Up session, you will need two Jenga-style games, one Jenga-style can/box covered with a paper saying “GOD” in large letters. Also, during today’s Bible Background Video, there will be several multiple-choice questions. Please make sure to read them out loud, so all levels of readers can follow along with the questions.

If you provided activities for kids, about 5 minutes before it’s time for POWER UP, let children know it’s time to clean up their activity/games and find their small group leaders. Children should sit with their small groups during POWER UP! This is a great time to use some fun music to help children transition. Video 1 or Video 9 can also be used with a countdown.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome! We are back in the story of Daniel. This story reminds us that God answers prayer; that when we trust God, we can be courageous; and He will help us do what is right. Who can tell us the SuperTruth from last week? [God will always answer my prayers.]

That’s right! Let’s start our time by praying right now, and then we will worship.

Lord Jesus, we invite You to speak to our hearts and change our lives today as we sing, pray, and study Your Word. Amen!

Great singing, everyone! Have a seat. This week, our SuperTruth is, “I will stand up for what is right in a world filled with tests and trials. Does anyone remember our Superbook story from last week? [Yes!] What happened when Chris, Joy and Gizmo saw the bully being mean to the younger boy on the playground? [Children answer.] Chris didn’t want to confront the bully. That’s where we will join the adventure now, as Superbook takes our heroes back in time to meet Daniel. As we watch a short version of our story, I want you to think about all the ways Daniel was courageous. During this video section, remember to read the questions out loud so all levels of readers can follow along.

Wow! Daniel was an amazing man who trusted God. Who can tell me some ways that Daniel was courageous? Have several children respond.

Our SuperVerse comes from Psalm 37:5, Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. All of us go through hard times, like when a family member is sick and we are worried about them. Or maybe your mom and dad have chosen to not live together anymore. Or perhaps you have been picked on at school. The question is not whether we will go through hard times, but whether we will trust God. When we pray, He will give us His wisdom and power to do the right thing. Let me show you an example.

Remember how the administrators didn’t like Daniel, so they tricked the king into making a rule that people could only worship the king? When we face problems in life, it may feel like the world is shaking. On this table, I have set up two Jenga games. They represent us! Have both games set up without the can/box around either one.

Pick up a can/box that you have covered with the paper saying “GOD” in large letters, and carefully place it over one of the Jenga games. On this one, I am placing a cover that says “God” on it. When hard times hit you like an earthquake—hit both Jenga games; the one without the can/box should fall down—you can stand firm with God’s help. How did Daniel stay strong and do what was right? [Children answer.] Yes, Daniel prayed and followed God’s ways, and God helped him. Because of Daniel’s faith, the king and others would worship the one true God.

Let’s pray together. Dear Lord, when problems come up in our lives, remind us to pray, help us to trust you, and give us Your power to stand strong. Amen!

Who is a “wonderer”? You know, do you ever think to yourself, “I wonder why M&Ms are not called W&Ws?” Asking questions is good, and many times we can find the answers if we look back in history. Did you know M&Ms are called M&Ms because two owners of a candy shop both had last names that started with the letter “M”? I call this “Getting the Background!”

Large Group Leader GuideLesson 2 of 3

Today, we are going to get the background on why Daniel was in Babylon by watching our Bible Background Video. During this video, you will need to read Daniel 6:1-3. So take a minute in your groups to find Daniel 6:1-3.

Give them a minute to look it up.

OK, everyone have it? Let’s watch the video.

There are times in the video for the children to answer questions. Read the questions out loud with the children and encourage them to call out the answers.

Daniel did as our SuperVerse said. He committed everything he did to the Lord, trusted Him, and God helped him. Let’s say our verse together: Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. Psalm 37:5
