Super Heroes

Language Target: Learning vocabulary ofnatural disasters, practicing present tenseQ + A, setting up a time schedule usingthe phrase “have to.”

Setting Up: This is a two-part lesson; Part 1concentrates on natural disastervocabulary as well as structured questionand answer patterns concerningappointment making. Part 2 givesstudents the opportunity to assume therole of a super hero who is entrusted withthe super human tasks of stopping naturaldisasters from occurring in places aroundthe world.

Beginning with Part 1, go through allof the natural disaster vocabulary withthe students. Have all the students writethe appropriate natural disaster beloweach picture. Next, review the samplesentences. Explain that this language is

useful for setting up appointments,specifically Super Hero appointments.Point out that the super heroes have to flyto some place, stop the natural disasterand save all the people.

Getting Started: Part 1: Put the studentsinto groups of three and hand outWorksheet B, one per group. Studentsdecide which Super Hero they’d prefer tobe. They need to cut the worksheet intothree sections; giving each student one ofthe super heroes’ schedules.

(These schedules represents one dayin the lives of super heroes who have toperform feats of salvation around theworld to stop natural disasters fromoccurring.)

These super heroes are all prettybusy, but, they must find time in theirschedules to have their picture takentogether to give out to their fans. Theproblem is finding time to get together tohave their picture taken. Finding a timeslot becomes the task for the students.

Students must first complete theirtime schedules. They should ignore alllines that indicate free time, but theymust fill in a location (city or countryname) for the natural disasters to occur.When students have written in locationsfor the disasters, they need to find a timeto have their fan club picture taken. Thedialogue would be something like this:

Venus Woman: “Mercury Man, are you free at 7:00a.m.?”

Mercury Man: “Sorry, I’m busy at 7:00 a.m. I have tofly to Alaska, stop the forest fire andsave all the people.”

Venus Woman: “Pluto Pup, are you free at 7:00 a.m.?”

Note: There is no time when all three arefree; this leads into higher-level languagepractice because students have tonegotiate with the others to rearrangetheir schedules.

Variation 1: If working with lower-levelstudents, prior to copying the super heroschedules (Part 2), white out Pluto Pup’slast appointment (the 8:00 p.m.Mudslide). Then make copies. This willbe the only available time slot in whichall three super heroes are all unoccupied.

Variation 2: It’s easy to introduce otherverb tenses into this lesson. Simplychange the schedule from today toyesterday, tomorrow, last week, next

week, etc. (Were you free …? Will yoube free…?)

Variation 3: Encourage advanced studentsto explain ‘how’ they plan to stop thenatural disasters. This will challengeeven some of the best English speakers.Additionally, the other two Super Heroescould offer advice or even disagree withthe method.

Building Fluency: Encourage students tocollect newspaper clippings of realnatural disasters around the world. (Theycould start building a scrapbook) This isan especially realistic and motivatingway to have discussions based on whatactually happened, why it happened,what was done about it, or how it couldhave been less disastrous, etc.
