TIPSHow to Grow Your Team: Recruitment TipsEvents are always more fun the more friends and family you have by your side, right? Right! We want to help you form the most fun and enjoyable experience possible while riding to right cancer, and it starts with growing your team!

More than half of 24 Hours of Booty riders hear about us from a friend, family member or grassroots outreach. It’s as simple as making an ask and inviting friends to join you! Need help growing your team? Follow these easy steps to start recruiting teammates!

Step 1: Social Circles List five to ten social circles you are a part of. Anything goes, whether these are family, work, neighbors or riding friends. Start brainstorming here!

Step 2: Outreach Now that you have your social circles listed, what is the best way to reach the people in these listed groups?

Step 3: Engage Now that you have a team, continue to grow by asking team members to recruit their friends and family to join you in a ride to fight cancer!

Team BootyTribe Word of mouth brought Team BootyTribe together. In 2012, Rob Freedman read a Baltimore Sun about rider Bryan McMillian and his involvement in 24 Hours of Booty. Through networking, Rob was put in touch with 24 Hours of Booty staff. He recruited his brother, along with a few friends and colleagues from Colliers International to ride in the 2013 event.

“We had no idea what to expect and the simple fact was that we had an absolute blast!” Rob said. “We rode, we ate, we laughed, we raised money – it was just a very fun event with warm supportive riders, family and friends and strangers all coming together.”

Team Booty Tribe evolved from Team Colliers after Rob’s friend Deborah Adler wanted to ride in honor of her husband, who was undergoing experimental cancer treatments. They immediately began recruiting others to join them and had 43 registered riders on their team for the 2014 event!

TIPS

Starting Your Fundraising: Helpful Tips

By asking people to donate to your 24 Hours of Booty ride, you’re giving your friends and family an opportunity to fight cancer alongside you! The biggest reason people don’t donate? It’s because they are not asked! Here are some tips to take the scary out of fundraising:

Set up your Participant Center. When you register, you have access to your own personal page on our website to raise money. Use it to tell your story! You can add your own story, photos and videos to share more about the reasons you ride. For help setting up your center, you can view video tutorials on our website or YouTube channel.

Send an email. 86% of riders who raise $1,500+ send at least 15 emails through their Participant Center — and often many more! An email sharing your story and requesting a donation is the most efficient way to meet your minimum.

Name your price. Don’t sell yourself short! When you send your email or letter, it helps to ask for a specific amount of money. For example, ‘would you join me in donating $50 to help fund patient navigation services?’ People can always choose to donate less!

Ask about matching gifts. Double the fun! Many companies offer full or partial matches on employee gifts. You can often double your contribution by simply filling out a company form. You can often double your contribution by using our online company match button when making a donation! Use the scrolling menu on the donation page to see if your company will match your donation.

Customize your email signature. Add a link to the bottom of your email signature that directs people to your fundraising page. It’s an easy way to let people what you’re doing. You’ll be surprised who responds!

In lieu of gifts. Instead of birthday gifts, ask friends and family to contribute to your ride fundraising!

Host a party. Host a simple backyard cookout. You provide the food and beverages, your friends and family provide a cancer fighting donation!

Gift Card Giving. Have an old gift card with money left on it, or one you won’t use? Turn that gift card into a donation for your fundraising! Learn more at giftcardgiving.us/24-hours-of-booty.

By asking people to donate to your 24 Hours of Booty ride, you’re giving your friends and family an opportunity to fight cancer alongside you! The biggest reason people don’t donate is because they aren’t asked!

How to Raise More: Fundraising at Home

Give the traditional car was a twist by hosting a Dog Wash! This works especially well in a neighborhood where you can advertise the service ahead of time and owners can easily get their pets over.

Host a house or clubhouse party. The options here are endless! You can do a cook-out, cornhole tournament or pool party and ask for donations! Food tastings work well—have friends each bring a dish and you can vote (with donations!) on which is your favorite. You can also do parties focused around sporting events or popular TV shows, or ask a chef (or good cook) you know to cook for everyone. Wine and beer tastings are popular, too!

Pass on the birthday or holiday gifts and ask for donations to your fundraising instead! This is also a great opportunity to post the link to your donation page on Facebook, Twitter or other social networking!

Host a yard sale in your neighborhood with proceeds benefitting your fundraising. Get your team involved for an even bigger sale.

Bake sales and car washes are almost always successful. Don’t forget these more traditional fundraising ideas!

Ask your school or church to include a short insert or paragraph about 24 Hours of Booty and your ride to the bulletin or program. Other ideas include informational tables in the lobby, coffee and donut sales, or a short presentation after the service.

Add your online fundraising link to your email signature! It’s a great reminder to friends and family who haven’t yet donated.

Change your voicemail or answering machine message—add a sentence that tells people how to donate to your fundraising efforts.

Send a video or photo letter to your email list. This one is simple and successful—Almost 90% of top fundraisers send at least 15 emails to reach their goals.

Send a letter from your pet, or a video or drawing from your young child. Get creative with your fundraising letters and emails!

Pink to Drink Four 24 Hours of Booty cycling teams have united together to raise funds to fight cancer. For the third consecutive year, the Pink to Drink fundraiser will be held at Sugar Creek Brewing Company and The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, simultaneously from 6-9 p.m. Ticket are $25 and include entry to the breweries, live music, appetizers and a fresh beer. There will also be about 30 items to bid on that night at the silent auction.

“If we could just bring all four of our teams together, we could really pull off the biggest party 24 Hours of Booty has seen,” said Katie Lee, captain of team AmWINS. “It was at that point that we just said we wanted to go BIG.”

The four teams went BIG and raised near $17,000 from the single grassroots event, making it the highest profiting community event benefitting 24 Hours of Booty and an event that Charlotteans pencil in on their calendars to attend every year.

How to Raise More: Fundraising as a Team

Some ideas for community fundraising events:

Sales Luminary Sales Bake Sales Yard Sales Office Candy Cart T-shirt Sales

Events Backyard Cookouts Cornhole Tournaments Beer Tastings Wine Tastings Wear Jeans to Work

Partnered Events Silent Auctions Restaurant Nights Movie Nights Guest Server/Bartender Team Sponsors Ask

Raising money together by creating a fun event the whole team can get excited about helps alleviate individual fundraising anxiety. Here are our top five tips for throwing a team event that will leave you (and your team) smiling!

Tip #1: Do what your team loves! Think about your hobbies and things that you and your team do for fun. Whether this is a backyard cookout, brewery tours, yard sales, or sporting events, chances are there is an opportunity to turn this into a unique fundraising event that gets the whole team involved. Doing things you already love will make it easier to plan and easier to get team buy in!

Tip #2: Make sure the whole team buys in! Events are most successful when there is buy in from everyone. Brainstorm together with your teammates so that everyone has a piece to plan. For example, have one member take care of logistics and another person handle door prizes while you handle promoting the event. Many hands make light work!

Tip # 3: Network, network and then network some more! Spend more time on your network than the details. Last year a team worked to secure a nice auction item from a local business. All team members were tasked with selling tickets for the auction item and were awarded fundraising credit for the tickets they sold. What made them successful is that every team member invested in selling tickets to their friends, family and co-workers, and they made over $8,000! The more time you spend inviting people who will come and make a donation, the better.

Tip # 4: Don’t try to reinvent the wheel! If you are thinking about doing a team event, call us! Chances are good that we’ve seen something similar, and we’re here to help. We’ve seen a lot of great team events and are happy to share ideas and tips. We can help make this process easier for you and save you valuable time and research!

Tip # 5: Stick with what you know! Do what you can handle and have fun doing it! Don’t feel pressure to throw a gala event if what you really want to do is hold a bake sale. The best events are the ones you enjoy planning. Brainstorm with your teammates about events that everyone will enjoy. Then, the fundraising is a bonus!

How to Raise More: Fundraising at Work

Most people spend a lot of time at the office. Capitalize by using one of the ideas listed below! Be sure to call us if you need help developing your idea—chances are we’ve seen another team do something similar!

Host a Jeans Day at work, or sell a book of several “dress down” passes. This requires very little work and groups have raised thousands of dollars this way! Just get the boss to sign off, advertise and sell tickets! Other fun themes could include college pride, tacky holiday, etc.

Throw a “cook off” at home or at work! Theme it and have everyone bring their best dish (breakfast, dessert, chili, etc.) and set up with jars in front of each dish. Have people vote on their favorite by putting money in the jars.

Host a silent work auction. Auction off privileges at the at the office – the best parking space, an extra vacation day, dress down days, even a lunch with one of the higher managers!

Penny Wars are another easy option. Divide your office into teams by floor, work group, or managers vs. employees! Set large jars in common areas and have teams compete for a prize. Pennies count as one point, silver change and dollars count as negative points. The object is to collect pennies for your own team, while putting silver change into other teams’ jars.

Snack sales are one of the oldest tricks in the book. Buy boxes of granola bars, candy and gum in bulk and sell for $1-2 after lunch each day. Add a healthy twist by only selling fruit, nuts, dark chocolate and other healthy items!

Host a “Brown Bag Lunch Day.” Have everyone bring their own lunch and donate what they would have spent at a restaurant to your fundraising efforts.

Wacky Tacky Dress Up! Have coworkers donate money to see you do a wacky stunt! It could be a funky hair style or color, committing to wear a tutu around the Booty Loop or dressing up—we had one rider raise over $1,500 from his coworkers if he promised to dress up as Elvis at the event and show pictures!

Reverse Raffle! All potential donors get a raffle ticket and sell it back for $10 to avoid getting their name drawn to do something embarrassing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where did the event get its name? The event started in Charlotte, NC on a popular cycling loop that has been called the Booty Loop for 30+ years. When Spencer Lueders, the founder of 24 Hours of Booty wanted to raise money for LIVESTRONG®, he decided to ride the Booty Loop for 24 hours straight. So many people came out to support him and share their cancer stories that the event opened up to the public the next year. We then expanded to Columbia in 2008, and Indianapolis in 2012.

Do I have to ride all 24 hours? No! There are no rules about how much you have to be on the course. Some people ride just a few laps, while others ride the entire 24 hours. Most people set goals somewhere in between. How far you want to ride is up to you and how far your inspiration takes you!

How many riders are on a team? All it takes is you and one other person – but the sky is the limit! The more people you recruit, the more fun it makes your ride!

Can we fundraise as a team? Team fundraisers are a great way to make raising money fun, and often easier! While most teams enjoy setting goals, each member of your team is responsible for reaching the fundraising minimum.

How do I throw a recruitment party for my team? Call us! We can schedule a party at your home or office and you can invite all your potential teammates. We’ll even bring the pizza! Contact us at [email protected] or 704-365-4417 at extension 119 to schedule!

Where does the money go? Funds go to support the cancer-fighting mission of 24 Hours of Booty. Dollars go to local cancer charities and The LIVESTRONG® Foundation. Check out the beneficiaries page at 24hoursofbooty.org about specific organizations.

Do I have to be a skilled rider? No! We love riders of all abilities to participate in our event.

Can kids ride? Yes! Check our website at http://www.24hoursofbooty.org/fundraising/ for more information on kids participating in 24 Hours of Booty. We have something for all ages!

Is it a competition? Not on the course, but the fundraising gets pretty competitive!

Do I need to bring food and drink? No! We provide three meals, a midnight pizza party and unlimited snacks and drinks through the whole event.

There are always vegetarian options available - if you have other dietary restrictions we suggest that you bring additional food to supplement.

We will also have food wristbands for sale in the 24 Hours of Booty store on site for friends and family.

Spectators We encourage inviting friends and family out to cheer on you and your fellow riders! They are welcome to hang out in Bootyville, hold signs on the side of the loop and can purchase passes to join you in the food tent.

Safety While the course is closed and has full police support, we want to make sure the event is safe and fun for everyone. Keep these things in mind as you ride:

Enter and exit only at the start/finish area.

Helmets and lights are required. Lights (front and back) are required when riding after dark.

Obey all traffic laws and rules of the road.
