Sunshine Coast Regional School Sport REGIONAL TRIAL DAY 1 INFORMATION TO: 1. The Principal 2. The Sportsmaster FROM: Regional School Sport Officer - Sunshine Coast Region TOPIC: Regional Sport Trial Day 1 Tuesday 18 February 2014 (Alt. Tuesday 25 February, 2014). 1. Please be mindful of the following guidelines: a) Schools should not send more students than make up the number in the Regional Team. b) Schools should attempt to ensure that only students with a realistic chance of making the Regional Team attend the Trials. (e.g. It is unlikely that 13 year old students would be selected in an open age team. However, there may be exceptions). c) If possible, it would be extremely helpful if teachers other than the Regional Convenor, Coach and Manager could also be released to assist at the trials. d) In some cases, to avoid problems associated with large numbers of students attending Trials, District Teams will be selected prior to the Regional Trials. Where this occurs, only students selected in the District Team should attend. It is strongly recommended that Districts send a Teacher with each Team. e) Any questions regarding the Trials should be directed either to the Regional Sports Officer or the Regional Convenor. f) If for any reason the Trials have to be deferred to the alternate date, schools will be notified by email no later than 7.00am on the day of the trial. Information will also be posted on the Sunshine Coast Region School Sport website: http://www.sunshinesport.eq.edu.au g) The Regional Convenor must receive written approval from the school for each student before the student can participate in the Regional Trial. This approval may be posted to the Convenor prior to the Trial or handed to the Convenor at the Trial. This policy also applies to District Convenors for District Trials. The individual or the group permission forms may be used. Students who attend Trials without written permission may be asked to return to their school as no supervision is available for students who are not involved in the Trials. NB The only possible exemption to this may be in the case of 13 year old Primary School students who are attending Secondary School Trials for the first time. NB Students selected in District Teams to attend the Regional Trial do not need to provide written permission to the Regional Convenor as long as the District Team is accompanied / supervised by a teacher from that District. If there is no Teacher Official with the team, then written permission is required. NB Schools must ensure all students attending Regional Trials have completed and returned a Project Consent form. NB Regional Teams, NOT SQUADS, will be selected at the Regional Trials. Shadow players may be announced and invited to attend training sessions but it must be explained that attendance at training sessions is strictly voluntary.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION IN SUNSHINE COAST REGIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS

( Policy to be explained to students prior to the commencement of the Regional Trials if necessary.)

1. To be eligible for nomination to represent the Region, the student must be participating in an inter-

school competition within the District at the time of the Regional Trial, provided that the school

attended by the student takes part in a competition. The school must be affiliated to the Region.

2. A student whose school does not participate in an inter-school competition may be invited to

nominate for selection in the Regional Team, provided that any other conditions, as determined by

the Region, are satisfied.

3. A student must attain all qualifying standards and conditions as set down by the SCRSSS and the

QSSS and must accept all requirements outlined in the “Invitation to join the Regional Team”.

A student must attend the entire Regional Trial, unless prevented by illness, injury, etc., to be

eligible for selection in a Regional Team.

Any variation to this procedure must be approved by the Regional Executive.

4. A student who does not attend the Regional Trials may only be considered for selection in the

Regional Team by making a request for exemption in writing to the Regional Convenor prior to the

Trials. The request must be accompanied by a resume of achievements in the sport and both must be

signed by a parent and the Principal.

Legitimate reasons for exemption may include :-

The student is involved in a State or National Championship in that sport or in a Regional

Team at a State Championship at the time of the Regional Trials.

The student is unable to compete at the Regional Trials due to illness or injury, verifiable by

appropriate supporting documentary evidence, e.g. Medical Certificate, available to the

Regional Convenor upon request, and has previously demonstrated a level of ability

sufficient to warrant nomination for the Regional Team.

The student is attending a scheduled school event, e.g. examinations, and is unable to

compete at the Regional Trials, verifiable by written endorsement from the school and has

previously demonstrated a level of ability sufficient to warrant nomination for the Regional

Team.

5. A student must be enrolled at and attending a school in the Region to be eligible for consideration

for selection in the Regional Team (except in the case of students attending Schools of Excellence or

Schools of Distance Education affiliated to QSSS and thirteen year old Primary School students

enrolled at and attending affiliated Primary Schools).

6. The Regional Convenor must have received written approval from the school for each student before

the student can participate in the Regional Trial. Where District Trials are held prior to the Regional

Trials, the District Convenor must have received written approval. When students are selected in the

District Team, the District Convenor will forward these student’s approval forms on to the Regional

Convenor.

This is to ensure students have the Principal’s approval to attend the Trials and, if selected, to go on

to the State Championships.

7. To be eligible for nomination to represent in the Regional Team, a student must not have attained

the age of nineteen (19) years on the 31st December of the year of competition.

N.B. Track and Field competitors must not have attained the age of twenty (20) years

on the 31st December of the year of competition.
