R a t R i v e r St. Malo Provincial Park Enjoy two beaches for a swim or to take your canoe or sailboard out for a spin St. Malo entered on a reservoir, St. Malo Provincial Park has long been a tradition for families and groups seeking a fun and pleasant atmosphere for their gatherings. Leaves sway and turn with each swell of wind that breaks the silence of a hike through the aspen/oak forest. If you visit the park later in the summer, you’ll probably see berry-pickers along the park’s roadways harvesting wild plums, chokecherries and saskatoons for campfire pancakes. The natural features that attract campers for weekend visits are the same ones that helped influence residents to live here. The first settlers of the area arrived in the late 1870s, and since then, generations of families have continued to make this region their home. Established in the summer of 2000, the St. Malo Interpretive program is a family favorite. Join the interpreter for an exploration of the Rat River dam and dyke, or discover the trails around the lake and back through the aspen/oak forest. Take in an evening amphitheatre program to learn more about this naturally and culturally rich park. Families enjoy swimming, fishing, miniature golf and playgrounds. The absence of powerboats gives calm and quiet waters that might not be found on other, more popular lakes. Relax on the two beaches. The campground is a great place to stay if you are taking part in one of the summer slow-pitch tournaments. White-tailed deer, ruffed grouse and a variety of birds can be viewed within a short driving distance from the park - visit the Wildlife Management Areas of St. Malo, an aspen/oak forest, the Rat River, or managed marsh. Summer events in and around the park include the St. Malo Triathlon in June and the annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and shrine in August. St. Pierre-Jolys offers the Frog Follies while Steinbach hosts Pioneer Days both on the August Long Weekend. Finally the town of St. Malo hosts the St. Malo Summer Festival in September and the Festival du Voyageur in February. More information on St. Malo Campground and St. Malo Provincial Park is available on request from the park office. Campground Tips • Be sure matches are extinguished. Break them in half before discarding. • Build no fires except in a designated firepit or use a camp stove. Before leaving make sure your fire is completely out. • Be careful with your cigarettes, cigars and pipe ashes. Crush them thoroughly before discarding. Never toss them from a vehicle. • Please! Do not litter. • Be sensitive to wildlife. Bears can be dangerous and should not be fed. Food must be stored away from your campsite, preferably in a locked vehicle, to avoid attracting hungry animals. Do not store food in your tent. Warm clothing is needed for cool nights. The use of insect repellent will add to your comfort. • Learn to recognize and avoid poisonous plants such as poison ivy. • In case of injury or illness contact a Campground Attendant or Park Patrol Officer. They can assist you to reach medical help. • Canoeists and hikers travelling in backcountry areas should advise a friend of their intended destination and anticipated length of trip. • Possession and consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the group use area.
