Sinceramente, Roger Vadeen

Parents, At Sunset Ridge, we are teaching students to be KIND to each other. We expect students to show kindness to their peers and to the adults at Sunset Ridge. Our teachers are teaching students 12 Kindness Concepts. I invite you to ask your children what they are

learning about kindness. I also encourage you to

expect your children to show kindness to

those around them when they are at home. Working

together, we can help our students to be

more kind and empathetic to each

other. Thank you for helping make Sunset Ridge a place where Kindness Matters!

I invite all family members to join me at Coffee with the Principal.

Goal 1: Consistent implementation of Competency-Based Education Goal 2: Develop our teachers to be successful with Competency-Based Education Goal 3: Foster success for all students and engage our parents Goal 4: Strengthen and expand early childhood education

Goal #1 Goal #2 Goal #3 and Goal #4

Short Cycle Data Monitoring All teachers will monitor progress for students in 4 to 5-week cycles. Focus for K-2 is writing across genres using Write from the Beginning and Beyond scoring guides and expectations. Focus for 3-5 writing is aligned to CMAS expectations and tasks (Narrative Writing; Literacy Analysis; Research Simulation). Success Criteria (scoring guides/rubrics) are created to communicate levels of proficiency. Protocols for ‘examining student work’ with administration have been shared along with the templates that must be filled out. Schedule of all data cycles has been communicated to staff. Professional development and feedback will be provided to support teachers throughout the process.

Partnership with Higher Education

Maintain partnership with local universities (i.e. Regis University) to place interns and student teachers in Sunset Ridge classrooms

Random Acts of Kindness Personalized Learning

Implement Random Acts of Kindness and Habits for Successful Personalized Learners in all PK-5 classrooms. As part of a bully reduction action plan, we will specifically teach students how to show ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ to each other and to their teachers. We believe that it will benefit our students to learn how to show kindness to others and to experience the joy of sharing kindness with others. Throughout the year, Sunset Ridge teachers will teach lessons to our students that promote kindness. Students will be celebrated and encouraged as they demonstrate kindness.

Math High Yield Strategies Math routines that all teachers will use to build students’ number sense and understandings of abstract, number connections.

Observations and Walkthroughs Administration will provide on-going feedback to teachers on: 1. Effective CBS and Personalized

Learning Practices; 2. Survey of Physical Learning

Environment; 3. Student Engagement and Increased

Student Interaction; 4. CLD and Effective Instructional

Practices; 5. Rigor and Complexity of Tasks; 6. Data Driven Instruction; 7. Professional Responsibilities and Student Relationships

Kagan Structures Kagan Structures will be used in all PK-5 classrooms to ensure students are provided multiple opportunities to engage in learning. Using cooperative Kagan Structures, students will be expected to share with each other and will be held accountable to participate in classroom discussions and collaborative/shared learning.

Community Engagement Invite parents to learn how they can effectively help their children at home through Title One Parent Education Nights, cultural events, visual and performing arts demonstrations, and our annual Summer Learning event. We will engage parents in multiple after-school events including student tutoring in ELA and math, academic clubs and parent education/outreach.

Student Data Notebooks/ Competency Tracker/Empower

Each student will have a Data Notebook. Data Notebooks will house students’ Data Story, Competency Trackers, goal setting forms, action plans, and Pathway to the Future forms. Students will meet with teachers to talk about plans after high school and beyond. In collaboration with teachers, students will track their progress through WPS performance levels beginning in kindergarten. Growth Gauges will be used to report percentages of students making expected progress. Within Empower, teachers will develop activities that include resources, action plans, learning activities and assessments of learning. Principal will monitor teacher activity and data entry both quantity and quality. We will develop and execute a plan to share Empower Parent logins and provide Empower Parent Portal training as needed. Principal will report to staff Empower usage.

Goal Setting/Action Planning Art & Science of Teaching

The WPS Instructional Model (New Art and Science of Teaching) will be used as a guide for teacher on-going learning. Teachers set goals and create action plans on Marzano elements of effective teaching practices.

Early Literacy Skills Students in grades K-2 will learn specific phonemic awareness skills and will be provided opportunities daily to apply learned phonemic awareness skills. Sunset Ridge staff will participate in on-going professional development and coaching on enhancing our development of students’ phonemic awareness. Using the resource by Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum, ‘Phonemic Awareness: The Skills That They Need to Help Them Succeed!’, Sunset Ridge teachers will implement a daily phonemic awareness building routine. We will monitor and intervene to ensure that our students lacking phonemic awareness are gaining confidence and mastery of phonics and phoneme skills.

Goal Setting/Action Planning CLD Strategies

CLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) instructional practices will be used as a guide for teacher professional learning. Teachers will set goals and make action plans on CLD instructional practices. All staff will participate in direct instruction and on-line modules to learn how to best support CLD learners.
