On The Street Where You Live Linda Kaye We are nearing the end of our year and you may ask, “What took so long,” or “Where did it go?“ For many it was a stressful year, from personal issues we faced to the wind and fire threats. Many of you started or finished projects on your homes. Some moved. Next month we will ask each of you to participate in the letter campaign to county and coastal commissioners to approve the 2- 4 am parking restriction coastal is appealing after the restriction we sought was achieved. For those that don’t know or remember, the SMPOA’s fiscal year end in June so we have 6 months remaining. The Board is very robust this year and far different than it has been in the past several years. There are more members and more participation by its members. It isn’t easy to serve month after month when you have a business to run and life to live with your own business and family. So I’d like to thank our current Board members: Thank you Gregg Bernstein, AC Chair, a Mortgage Broker; for the past five years you’ve volunteered weekends covering AC site visits and issues, and served continuously on the Board. Thank you, Larry Klein, developer and real estate specialist, current Treasurer. Health challenges add an additional burden. Despite this, you have fought illness back and continue to tirelessly serve our community. Thank you Marco Rufo, VP, a luxury home specialist. Despite your challenging schedule you still find time to print our Sunset Mesa-Ge (in color) and never charge us! Your depth of knowledge amazes me. Thank you Jeremy Cohen, Secretary, Gm Talent Studios. You may be new to neighborhood but you’re making a mark on this community with your activism. The Benefits of Volunteering We would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers (and future volunteers) for enriching our community and creating an active, fun, and involved environment to Sunset Mesa!

Recent research has determined that there are some surprising benefits to the person sharing his or her time with others.

Here are five unexpected benefits of volunteering: 1. Giving your time makes you feel time-rich. Cassie

Mogilner, a professor at Wharton wrote in the Harvard Business Review that – based on her experiments and research – those who give away their time serving others say they feel less time-constrained than those who don’t. Studies discovered that, rather than the social connection or enjoyment connected with volunteering, the people who give their time away feel more capable, confident and useful. They feel more accomplished, and that’s why they feel like they have more time to accomplish things in the future.

2. Volunteering keeps you healthy, especially if you’re older. A report by “A Corporation for National and Community Service” notes: “Those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.”

3. Loving others makes you feel more love. Researchers at the London School of Economics studied the level of “happiness” among those who volunteer, and found that the more people served others, the happier they were. Volunteering builds empathy, strengthens social bonds and makes you smile – all factors in measurable happiness levels.

4. Volunteering is good for your social life. People who are naturally shy or have trouble making friends have found that volunteering gives them the opportunity to develop their social skills – especially those who volunteer in programs like mentoring, tutoring or teaching. Additionally, being around like-minded people gives them ample opportunity to strike up friendships with people who have common interests.

5. Volunteering sets a good example for your kids. Like it or not, adults are role models to the younger generation, so when kids see their parents and/or friends’ parents giving themselves away to those who need assistance, they are more likely to do the same.
