DIRECTORS, STAFF, and BOOSTERS:
Welcome and thank you for participating in the annual Sunset
Classic competition on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
After many years away, we are pleased to announce that we will be
hosting at our own venue, Sunset High School. Please read through
the following information for details about the show and the day.

SCHEDULE:
Preliminary competition begins with the first band performance time
of 11:00 AM. Finals will begin with the National Anthem being
played at 4:00 PM and the first band
performing at 4:15 PM. You can find the schedule posted on the
NWAPA website at this link Band Check-In begins at 7:00 AM. Support
vehicles may enter the staging area at 7:00 AM.
Should your support crew need extra time and desire an earlier
arrival time, please contact the Presidents (listed above).
Ticket booths will open at 9:00 AM. Concessions will open at 9:00
AM.
BAND ENTRY – PARKING
Sunset High School is located at 13840 NW Cornell Rd, Portland, OR
97229. Entrance to the facility is directly off NW CornellRd and NW
Trail Ave (between NW Murray Ave and NW Science Park Dr. Bands and
support vehicles will enter off NW Cornell Rd.
Signs and volunteers will be available to direct busses and support
vehicles to the staging area.
Due to limited space in the band staging area please limit the
amount of vehicles in your assigned area. For everyone’s safety,
extra vehicles should not be parked in the staging area.
Parking is assigned based on the number of trucks and buses you are
bringing. NO AISLES MAY BE BLOCKED AT ANY TIME. THESE MUST BE
KEPT
OPEN FOR EMERGENCY ACCESS. If your crew or vehicles are found to be
in violation, you will be asked to remove or reposition your
equipment. We reserve the right to call a tow truck to remove any
vehicles blocking an aisle. This is a requirement from the school
that MUST be adhered to.
Spectators have four parking lots to choose from off NW Science
Park Dr. Each will have a sign and Lot attendant. Please do NOT
park in other lots adjacent to Sunset High School
that don’t have signage. You could be towed. We have a great
supportive community and want to be good neighbors.
Handicap and VIP parking is available on school premises near the
stadium. All other spectator, volunteer, student, and staff parking
is offsite. Please reference the accompanying maps for directions
to one of four nearby parking lots.
TICKETS – PASSES
No admittance to the spectator area will be allowed without a
wristband. To ensure that spectators have access to home field
seating (on the north side of the
performance field), participating band members will be seated in
the ‘away’ section spectator bleachers (on the south side of the
performance field).
All performing members will be given wristbands at check-in on your
busses. We will provide passes for your staff, instructors, and
volunteers in accordance with the
NWAPA circuit rules. Please refer to the NWAPA member handbook,
which can be found at nwapa.net.
You may purchase an additional 10 passes at the discounted rate of
$7.50 each (for volunteers and chaperones). These are available for
purchase at the East Ticket Booth. Each band will have an envelope
at check-in with their name on it containing your passes.. Please
purchase all additional passes at one time. It is the band’s
responsibility to distribute the passes to your support crew.
Regular ticket price is $15 and is good for the entire day.
As a special thank you for participating in the 2019 Sunset
Classic, your band envelopes will also include a limited number of
passes for your band members to gain access to the Columbia
Sportswear Employee Store for a limited time. Pending availability,
we will try to include extra passes for your staff and support
crew. The Columbia Sportswear Employee Store is located on NW
Science Park Drive just across from the Sunset High School
track.
BAND HOSTS
First time at the Classic? If you wish, we will provide you with a
volunteer to help answer your questions, direct you to warm-up
areas, and assist you in the performance entrances. Please contact
the Presidents Classic Chair (listed above).
CHANGING AREA
The high school does not have changing areas available. Please use
your buses/equipment trucks and appropriate discretion for changing
areas. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
BAND WARM-UP
PLEASE DO NOT GO OUTSIDE DESIGNATED AREAS FOR WARM-UPS!!!!
NO WARM-UP IN THE BAND STAGING AREAS DURING PERFORMANCES! This will
be strictly enforced. Once the first band is at the field entrance,
all warm-ups must be confined to the assigned warm-up areas
indicated on the stadium maps.
Warm-up areas are indicated on the attached diagram. It is very
important that you adhere to these areas due to sound traveling at
the stadium.
Metronomes and time marking devices must be used in accordance with
the NWAPA rules as follows: Amplification (Mega Vox, Long Rangers,
Speaker systems, etc.) used for warm-up need to face into the
ground and should only be used far away from the stadium. Bands
need to warm-up facing away from the stadium. We ask that you
respect the neighbors of the stadium as well as other competing
bands.
PERFORMANCE
Please have your unit assembled at the band and pit entry points 10
minutes prior to your scheduled performance time. Volunteers will
be on hand to direct your ensemble.
As always, use caution during your entrance and exit. No food is
allowed on the playing field, including gum, seeds, and drinks.
ATVs are allowed in the pit area only and must make as wide a turn
as possible to avoid tire
damage to the field surface. Timing penalties rule will be enforced
per NWAPA members’ handbook.
AWARDS – RETREAT
NO Full Retreat. Drum Majors and Captains retreat only at both
preliminary and finals round awards.
Trophy presentation will follow both the preliminary and finals
rounds. Please have your drum majors and/or captains in uniform and
ready to enter the field at least 15 minutes prior to the Prelim
and Finals awards ceremonies.
Please do not block the announcer or trophy table during the
ceremonies. To ease congestion, only the Director should attend the
‘packet hand out’ meeting.
After Preliminary competition concludes, the Finals schedule will
be determined by reverse order of scores (top score goes last) per
the NWAPA rules.
FIRST AID
For help go to either ticket booth located at each end of the
stadium, or contact the closest volunteer. We have first aid kits
at the booths, and an onsite EMT.

CONCESSIONS
Concession stands are located next to the stadium and will be open
throughout the day. The menu is varied and includes hot dogs,
nachos, drinks, etc. A food cart may be on site as well.
SOUVENIRS
Sunset Classic T-Shirts and hoodies, programs, and novelties, will
be available for purchase near the concession area.
Please visit the other booths set-up as well. We will have
representatives of other organizations to help keep people involved
in marching band.
SUPPORT CREWS/FOOD
All support teams who are providing food or cooking food must
maintain proper sanitation and a clean area. Trash will be picked
up regularly throughout the day. Cooking areas must be outside of
tents unless tents/canopies are fire retardant and marked as such.
A proper fire extinguisher must be present in the cooking area. The
Fire Marshall will be present during the day and any requests made
by them must be heeded immediately.

SPECTATOR PARKING - 2019 SUNSET CLASSIC
Parking on the Sunset High School campus is reserved for band
staging/warm-ups and handicap parking ONLY. There are 7 nearby
parking lots for spectators (noted by stars below). The street
address is listed for each on
NW Science Park Drive. Each lot will have a Sunset Classic parking
attendant at the entrance, visible by a brightly-colored vest.
Please respect our neighbors by only using the designated lots.
