Greetings Friends!

Thank you for your interest in the Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. We take great pride in our oversight of Carmel’s treasured cultural assets – Sunset Center and Forest Theater – and have filled the following pages with images and information detailing our activities throughout 2018. We hope you will enjoy learning more about our operation as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, including the programs and services we provide to our community each season.

Over 150,000 people participate in the activities of our two venues each year! Our cultural offerings make this village an attractive community to live and work in and provide great economic impact on our area as well. Through our City partnership and annual operating grant, Sunset Center also helps to sustain the activities of numerous local cultural organizations, including our tenants and resident companies listed in this report. So much happens on our campus, not just in the main theater, but in our many ancillary spaces like meeting rooms and outdoor areas - over 500 individual events & meetings each year to be exact!

Once again, we thank you for your continued patronage and support. We hope to see you again soon!

Christine Sandin, Executive & Artistic Director

ALWAYS SOMETHING ENRICHING, EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINING GOING ON AT THE SUNSET CENTER

CAMPUS...Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3).

In the simplest terms, this means that we exist to serve the community - this means YOU! Over 850 people took advantage

of Sunset Center’s free offerings, such as our Healing Arts Series, Community Holiday Party, Marjorie Evans Galley Artist’s

Receptions and Jazz at Lincoln Center Live Webcast Series.

With the exciting Sunset Presents theater performances we present each season, performances by our Historic Presenting Partners, distinguished independent presenters and numerous other organizations in the theater; a busy schedule of meetings, conferences, lectures and gallery receptions throughout Sunset Center’s North Wing and lovely auxiliary spaces; and events and classes facilitated by our tenant organizations all over campus, Sunset Center is truly the place to experience the unique and varied offerings of our vibrant community.

Sunset Center’s expansive campus serves as a vibrant community

center, creating space for residents and visitors to engage with the

arts and connect with one another socially and professionally.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the city-owned, community-run Sunset Center

continues to evolve from its rich history, deepening its great impact

on the creative and intellectual legacy of Carmel-by-the-Sea and

the Monterey Peninsula.

We selected the Sunset Center’s North Wing for a variety of events this year,

because it’s classy, comfortable, and is at the heart of downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. What’s more, the staff is very

professional and friendly, and offer impeccable service and all the audio and visual technology needed for a successful

event or meeting.

SUNSET CENTER AND FOREST THEATER

As of July 1, 2017, Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. began management of the beautiful outdoor Forest Theater - one of the oldest remaining outdoor theaters west of the Rockies. The 540-seat amphitheater is framed by towering pines, providing a majestic backdrop for the films, plays, musicals, other performances and special events that take place there. Our Sunset Presents at the Forest Theater debut presentation at this beloved community treasure was with the famed multiphonic singers of Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery performing Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing as part of their international tour of The Mystical Arts of Tibet.

In conjunction with this ceremonial performance at the Forest Theater, the monks of Drepung Loseling had a week-long residency in and around Carmel brought to you by Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. This included the construction of a gorgeous Mandala Sand Painting in the lobby of Sunset Center’s theater, as well as two informative lectures and meditation sessions, provided for free and open to all community members, in this very powerful celebration of Tibetan art, culture, tradition, and global awareness.

The programming was a regional hit - with community members near and far engaging in activities at these two iconic, Carmel-by-the-Sea cultural gems. We look forward to contuing to bring the very best world-class artistic and cultural performing arts to all of our venues.

SUNSET CENTER’S ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM

Building on the success of our signature arts-in-education program, Classroom Connections, Sunset Center now facilitates three important, large-scale programs that address arts integration in our local schools. We are currently collaborating with school districts from North and South Monterey Counties on: Classroom Connections, the world-renown Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education program, and the groundbreaking Turnaround Arts: California, providing a range of professional development opportunities in arts integration for educators, delivering arts resources to classrooms, and supporting larger shifts in school culture by leveraging the unique capacity of the arts.

SUNSET CENTER’S FIFTH ANNUAL GALA

The event of the season, Sunset Center’s Fifth Annual Gala: Neil Sedaka at Sunset included a fabulous theater main stage performance by the renown Singer, Songwriter, Composer, Pianist, and Author. His impressive sixty-year career includes him being one of the first teen pop sensations of the ‘50s, working as a successful songwriter for himself and other artists in the ‘60s, enjoying superstardom in the ‘70s, and remaining a constant writing and performing force throughout the late-90s up through the present. Gala guests experienced true VIP treatment: red carpet arrival, front and center theater seating, cocktails and champagne, gourmet dinner, sensational live auction, and a post-performance Meet and Greet. Due to our generous Donors’ support, Sunset Center is able to grow our outreach and education programs, broaden our artistic presentations, and service the needs of our community users.
