User Description

• Women concerned with raising awareness about skin cancer

• (For my tests, 5 Stanford women.)• They should be particularly cognizant of the risks of

skin cancer, perhaps due to:o family history of skin cancero fair-skinnedo other traits that make them

susceptible to skin cancer

Jenny joins the Sunset movement

The Sunset has a notch for each day she wears sunblock. "Popping" a notch reveals a color and a single letter. The letters all spell out quotes from strong women.

Later that afternoon, Jenny buys a sunset necklace and puts it on, popping the first day - kinda like birth control pills.

Jenny's mother has skin cancer and her grandmother developed a nasty case. She has always been told about wearing sunscreen but she doesn't see anybody else doing it.

One day she sees Angelina Jolie wearing an interesting necklace with an evening gown and hears through the grapevine that it's her Sunset Necklace.

She sees a girl at Stanford wearing the Sunset Necklace! Up close, she sees that the girl's has some colorful dots on the inside of it.

She collects a necklace for each month and they are cheap so she buys 12 at a time. She always pops them in order. She can see other women's sunsets and they are all popped at the same place.

Features/Functionality

• The Sunset has a neckline that covers the back of one's neck with a yellow band, like shown in the logo of the Skin Cancer Foundation.

• Anything can be hung at the front of the necklace so people can customize it with related or unrelated trinkets. Famous people wear trinkets of parents who have skin cancer.

• The inside of the neckline has 'notches' that can be 'popped' for each day. They cover the back of the neck (which is susceptible to burn/cancer) and is visible to others.

• When a notch is popped, it reveals a letter and a color. These can be place so they face outward or inward. The letters spell the name of a woman who had skin cancer.

• It reinforces a sense of community because all women have it and they will be curious to see each other's names/quotes.

• Each month has a different necklace and people buy that month's necklace. Each month has quotes from a different women or theme (?) and are "collector's items".

Theoretical Justifications

• Community: like "awareness bracelets", the movement becomes part of them and their identity. They get reminded when they see each other's Sunsets and they can even ask each other for sunblock.

• Daily reminder: If they pop out of sequence or don't pop a notch, they will get reminders from other people.

• Span: By design, it's  a 'span' habit for one month. If you do something for one month, it's likely that it could become a habit. Doing it for 1 day is not likely.

• Social pressure: Join a movement.• Self-expression: Customize it by hanging something on your Sunset.

Results of User Testing

• Talked to a 28 yr old girl from Atlanta.• She said nobody would be able to see it because

her hair would cover the back of her neck.• She would also beware of the back of the neck

getting sunburned because it means "redneck" and she lives in the south so that's a no-no.

Shortcomings of Design

• Requires a critical mass to be effective.• Not a strong daily reminder.• Doing it for 'one day' as a 'trial' is unlikely.• If you forget, you can always pop the notch

tomorrow.

Expansion - What else is possible?

• Other form factors or ID possibilitieso Pop the notches on your virtual Sunset.o Combine your Sunset with other people for coolness.o A chip in your Sunset that tells you about other Sunsetters nearby

and does coolness.

• Other features and interactionso Make collectable versions for certain months.

Next Steps in Design Process

• Bring a prototype to some young women.• Have some natural sunblocks that could partner

with Sunset.• Talk to the livestrong people?

Sunblock is as sexy as a Sunset.
