EVANSTON, Ill. (16 June 2015) — The continued fight to stamp out polio will receive an additional $40.3 million boost from Rotary to support immunization activities and research carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Rotary grants these funds to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF for polio immunization, surveillance and research activities in 10 countries. The funding commitment comes at a critical time as Nigeria – the last polio-endemic country in Africa – approaches one-year since its last case of polio, which occurred in Kano State on 24 July, 2014. If the current progress continues, WHO may remove Nigeria from the list of polio-endemic countries as early as September. In addition to the notable progress in Nigeria, no new cases of polio have been reported anywhere in Africa since August 2014. Experts do, however, strongly caution that it is too soon to fully celebrate. Nigeria needs to go an additional two years without polio to be certified polio-free. Funding and support for high- quality immunization campaigns and surveillance activities will be key to sustaining current gains. "We are closer than we've ever been to wiping out polio," said Mike McGovern, chair of Rotary's International Polio Plus Committee. "Although there has been noteworthy progress made against the disease, children remain at risk. Rotary – along with our partners – must continue to stay the course and remain steadfast in our plight to eradicate polio. These funds will help boost our efforts to combat polio worldwide." The only two other polio-endemic countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, continue to experience hurdles in polio eradication campaigns including inaccessibility to children and security. Last year, Pakistan saw an outbreak which resulted in more than 300 cases, the highest number in the country in more than a decade. As a result, Pakistan accounted for almost 90% of the world's cases. However, there has been improvement in 2015. Cases are down nearly 70% over this same time in 2014. Progress against polio, while significant, remains fragile. Rotary's funds will support immunization efforts in: $9.9 million in Nigeria; $12.2 million in Pakistan and $2.3 million in Afghanistan. Additional funds will support efforts to keep other at-risk countries polio-free. The grants include $1 million, Cameroon: $900,000, Chad; $2 million, Democratic Republic of Congo; $1.1 million, Ethiopia; $1 million, Niger; $1.5 million, Somalia; and $1.5, South Sudan. In addition, grants totaling $5.8 million will provide surveillance in African and Eastern Mediterranean regions. Grants to Africa alone total $19 million. In total, Rotary has donated $688.5 million to support polio eradication efforts in Africa over the past thirty years. Rotary launched its polio immunization program Polio Plus in 1985 and in 1988 became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the WHO, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since the initiative launched in 1988, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to less than 400 confirmed in 2014. Rotary's roles within the initiative are fundraising, advocacy, and social mobilization. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.4 billion and countless volunteer hours to fight polio. Through 2018, every new dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year. “BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD”

WHAT BETTER WAY TO BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD THAN TO BE PART OF THE “END POLIO NOW” PROGRAM

Here is an article from RI to keep you all in the loop as to progress in this important area of Rotary service.

Funding and support for high-quality immunization campaigns and surveillance activities will be key to sustaining current gains.

"We are closer than we've ever been to wiping out polio," said Mike McGovern, chair of Rotary's International Polio Plus Committee. "Although there has been noteworthy progress made against the disease, children remain at risk. Rotary – along

with our partners – must continue to stay the course and remain steadfast in our plight to eradicate polio. These funds will help boost our efforts to combat polio worldwide."

The only two other polio-endemic countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, continue to experience hurdles in polio eradication campaigns including inaccessibility to children and security.

ROTARY FAMILY HEALTH DAYS

7-9 OCTOBER 2015

It’s now time to get the show on the road. After an incredibly successful meeting last Friday 10 July with the Western Cape Department of Health (25 attendees), the Rotary team that attended, which included National Programme Director Sue Paget, are excited and ready. We now hope to pass on that enthusiasm and passion because this campaign showcases Rotary at its best - in a public/private-partnership - making a huge difference in our communities. We simply could not do it on our own. This partnership is critical to the NDoH to help them achieve their 2030 Vision goal – “Quality Health Care for all South Africans”. Mr Mxolisi Zondi of the National Department of Health provided us with a concerning overview of the quadruple burden of disease facing South Africa and the importance of public-private partnerships, such as the partnership between the Department of Health and Rotary to implement the Rotary Family Health Days. The National goal this year is 75 000 clients goal. There is no doubt that the sites in the Western Cape can reach at least 35 000 clients this year. Moving sites to capture a larger footfall could help us achieve this goal. DG Geraldine encourages as many clubs as possible to get involved and be part of this important campaign.

Report back on meeting with the Western Cape DoH This meeting went extremely well. An excellent partnership is in place. Clubs should please set up meetings (preferably with other clubs in your sub-district|) to meet with the health folk to arrange the free services for your site. What we learnt at this meeting was that there are areas that are just crying out for services. Once we have a shortlist of these “high risk” areas, we will look at how we could possibly include these areas.

PILOT NUMERACY PROJECT

Numeracy Explained You will all, no doubt, be aware of the pilot Numeracy project we started this year at Marvin Park Primary School and Oklahoma Primary School in Macassar. The pilot is paid for by generous donations from overseas sponsors, notably the Carl Duisberg Foundation. The initiative to support these two schools through the provision of alternative learning materials arose from the dire need to increase the mathematics results in schools in South Africa. During his tenure of president of our club Clive Reed was responsible for identifying and initiating the Numeracy project. HSRC started a workgroup consisting of Issy Gaude, Tania Wait, Dave Wilson, Jean Millar, and Chris van der Leij which resulted in the current pilot. The pilot is based on training maths teachers to teach Primary School students mathematics in a more holistic and natural way. The books being used are part of the Numbersense series of workbooks. GUEST SPEAKER AARNOUT BROMBACHER ON MATHEMATICS

In this month's business meeting we had the pleasure of attending a presentation by Aarnout Brombacher (of Brombacher and Associates). The presentation offered some fascinating insights into the difference between the traditional method of teaching children to memorise rules and formulas versus the method of providing the children with a feeling for numbers and their relationships with a view to develop problem solving skills rather than doing sums. Aarnout demonstrated how easy it is to be tricked into thinking that children actually understand what they are doing just because they come up with the correct answer. Aarnout Brombacher's approach is based on providing the children with a practical feeling for numbers (in other words giving them number sense) before we deal with abstract mathematics like additions, subtractions, multiplications, divisions, fractions, and so on. Aarnout's contention, therefore, is that we should focus on training teachers to teach mathematics before we expose the children to them. One of the most eye-opening insights offered to us is the fact that the teachers that excel at maths are usually teaching maths to the highest grades whereas they should in fact be teaching the lower grades to ensure that the children get the basics right. A most refreshing and thought-provoking idea. At the end of the presentation Aarnout got a well-deserved thank you from Chip Michie and a hearty applause from all Rotarians and guests.

Bio Aarnout Brombacher is the founder and head of Brombacher & Associates, and was the former head of the Mathematics Department at Westerford High School and a Past-President of AMESA. In 1996 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and read for a Masters degree in Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia in the USA. Aarnout and the team at Brombacher and Associates are involved in the materials development, teacher training and research in the field of mathematics education. Among other materials, the team has developed the Number Sense Workbook Series, to provide independent written activities for children as they develop a strong sense of number. A strong sense of number is at the heart of being able to do mathematics and central to mathematics in the early years. As part of their teacher training activities the team provide in-class coaching support to early grade teachers in a number of school. Aarnout has led national surveys of early grade reading and mathematics in more than 10 countries across Africa and the Middle East. In Jordan Aarnout has led a pilot intervention research activity that has shown a great deal of potential in improving early grade mathematics performance. Based on the results of the pilot activity, the Ministry of Education and Government of Jordan have decided to take the activities to scale and to implement the approach in all schools in the Kingdom over the next five years. JAN ARKERT on FRACKING IN THE KAROO

Jan is a geologist now becoming a conservationalist and doing his M.Sc on the biodiversity in the Karoo due to Fracking. He has been a geologist for 25 years and this is in direct conflict with the conservation of the environment. Fracking is the process of extracting gas from the shale rock, drilling down 4000m to 5000m before drilling across the shale horizontally. The Karoo rock is 43% OF South Africa (600 sq kilometers, and 40% of that is under the current permit applications. It is estimated that the fracking will extract all the gas in 30 years and the question then is what it will have done to the environment. It is estimated that 4300 wells will be drilled. The infrastructure that will need to be developed will destroy the habitat and how will the mines be managed? The Karoo doen’t have water and, as the process of fracking entails

pumping massive amounts of water, mixed with chemicals, into the earth. What will the water contaminate and how will the radioactive water be disposed of? And how will the water be brought to the mines in an area short on infrastructure? The major threats to the Karoo asre the loss of habitat, environmental pollution, and and, with all the road activity, road kill. Jan’s address was extremely interesting and gave some clarity on fracking to many of us who knew more or less what fracking was but did not have a good understanding of the pros and cons. To make it even more interesting our Robert Grunwald, a geologist involved with prospection, was the thank you speaker and he too put in his penny’s worth. All in all a thought provoking talk that gave us some clarity into the long term risks of fracking.

FRACKING BY NUMBERS

Approximately 15 000 to 20 000 kl (15-20 million litres) per fracking event. This is the equivalent of about 2000 truck loads. Fracking fluids include 90% water, 9% fine sand 1% chemical additives.Between 30 and 80% fluids return to surface Up to 32 fracking events per well pad In the order of 6 000 kl of waste water generated per well That is the equivalent to an area of 1ha on average 0,6m deep Cumulative total of potential flow back only is (10500 wells x 6000kl) is 63 million kl (63 billion litres) of hazardous waste. Where does all this water come from in a water stressed region such as the Karoo and how is the waste going to be treated?

TON – From Europe

Dear fellow HSRC members , Just wanted to give you all a sign of life from Europe by way of reporting briefly on our visit to St.Andrews in Scotland , the cradle and sacred ground of the Game of Golf , where the famous St.Andrews Golfclub was founded in 1843 ( see pic nr 2 )and where also the earliest known reference to a professional tournament is found as early as 1819 .

Ria and I had the privilege of participating in a golf tournament yearly ( for the 61 st time this year ! )

organized by St.Andrews Rotary Club in which this year around 250 golfers and their partners took part from all around the world in a 4 day event played on a number of courses amongst which The Old Course , the oldest ( or maybe second oldest as one other course being Musselburgh also in Scotland claims this title) and certainly most famous golfcourse in the world . It was a thrill to play on this course ( see pic 1 with Ria and Ton on the Swilcan Bridge the course landmark) which this year the venue of the most important golf event of the year called The Open . During and around the golf the Fellowship was fantastic meeting old friends and making new friendships. The Organising Committee of St.Andrews Rotary club , under the Governorship of Bill White did an absolutely sterling job from start to finish even making sure that the weather was far from Scottisch for all the visitors with no rain but even warm days all the way . The event was closed with a great prizegiving dinner at the old Town Hall ; Ria and yours truly performed respectably but not good enough to have a run at the beautiful trophies but We Will Be Back . When having the opportunity I recommend this experience to all HSRC golfing friends . Fond regards to all Ton
